I have just discovered that my grandfather died in Mokena, May 1944. Would some knowledgeable historian please stand up, and say what Mokena was like in the war years, was it a hive of activity? I would appreciate a thumb sketch description of Mokena, its local paper and service clubs. Most of all its cemetery. Thank you in advance. Maureen Jones Victoria BC Canada
Hi again, This is the third and last line that I know came from around Joliet and Monee, ILL. to SE MN. My mother's maiden name was SOMMERS and she is a direct descendant of Frederick Louis SOMMERS and Mary MILLER/MUELLER. If anyone is interested in these Sommers, I would happy to share info. FREDERICK ADAM SOMER was born November 30, 1821 in Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany, and died November 11, 1885. He married ROSINE CHRISTINE ELISE SCHULT in Germany, daughter of CHRISTIAN SCHULT. Notes for FREDERICK ADAM SOMER: Their oldest son, Frederick Louis, was born in Germany January 8, 1851. When the family emmigated to the US, they lived for 2 years in Joliet, IL then came to Northfield/Dundas, Minnesota in 1855. Their second son, John, was born in Joliet in 1854. Frederick Louis's wife, Mary Miller, (father's name Phillip) was born in Illinois November 24, 1847 - her family apparently left Illinois at the same time as the Sommers family. The other nine children were born at the Northfield Township homestead. Notes for ROSINE CHRISTINE ELISE SCHULT: Rosine was blind in one eye from sea sickness during her voyage to the U.S. This must mean that she threw up so much that she burst blood vessels in her eye.(?) Children of FREDERICK SOMER and ROSINE SCHULT are: i. FREDERICK LOUIS SOMMERS, b. January 08, 1851, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany; d. May 09, 1875, Waseca Co., MN; m. MARY MILLER, Abt. 1872. ii. JOHN CHARLES SOMMERS, b. March 28, 1854, Joliet, Illinois; d. October 12, 1928; m. SARAH HOLMES, July 29, 1879, Martin County, MN. Notes for SARAH HOLMES: Sarah was left motherless at the age of 1 1/2 years, lived with Stollcop family and sometimes known as Sarah Stollcop. iii. ALVINA SOMMERS, b. May 16, 1857, Northfield Township homestead; d. August 12, 1954; m. JOHN KOESTER, October 10, 1878. iv. AMELIA SOMMERS, b. January 03, 1859, Northfield Township homestead; d. March 22, 1948; m. WILLIAM BENZ, February 01, 1883. v. WILLIAM SOMMERS, b. February 13, 1861, Northfield Township homestead; d. April 13, 1928; m. MINNIE CHUTE. vi. ELLA BELLE SOMMERS, b. January 24, 1863, Northfield Township homestead; d. October 06, 1913; m. CHARLES BERG. vii. GEORGE HENRY SOMMERS, b. December 01, 1864, Northfield Township homestead; d. October 03, 1954; m. LOUISE PFEIFFER, August 17, 1889. viii. SARAH SOMMERS, b. April 28, 1866, Northfield Township homestead; d. February 27, 1954; m. FRANK KOESTER. ix. FRANK SOMMERS, b. April 29, 1868, Northfield Township homestead; d. April 28, 1908; m. MARY ALBERS, May 05, 1892. x. CALISTA SOMMERS, b. December 18, 1870, Northfield Township homestead; d. April 20, 1949, Canada; m. (1) JAY WILLIAM FLETCHER, 1896; m. (2) WILLIAM NAHL, April 09, 1908, Home of M.P. REID, Front Street, Nelson, B.C.; m. (3) WIGGINS, Aft. 1933. xi. HATTIE SOPHIA SOMMERS, b. January 05, 1873, Northfield Township homestead; m. CHARLES WALLACE, June 18, 1902. Best Regards, Kathy Hines Minneapolis, MN
Hi again, Seems that at least three of my lines came from Will Co., ILL to Waseca or Steele Co., MN. This MILLER/MUELLER line is probably hard to track because of the very common surname. If anyone has any info on Phillip or his daughter, Mary, MUELLER/MILLER - I would be extremely glad to hear about it. PHILLIP MUELLER was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. Child of PHILLIP MUELLER is: 2. i. MARY MILLER, b. November 25, 1847, Monee, Will Co., Illinois; d. August 25, 1911 (Waseca County?). Generation No. 2 MARY MILLER (PHILLIP MUELLER) was born November 25, 1847 in Monee, Will Co., Illinois, and died August 25, 1911 (in Waseca County?). She married (1) FREDERICK LOUIS SOMMERS Abt. 1872, son of FREDERICK SOMER and ROSINE SCHULT. She married (2) PHILLIP BISHMAN Abt. 1876 in Waseca County, son of ADAM BISHMAN and ANNA BRANDT. More About FREDERICK LOUIS SOMMERS: Fact 1: buried in Prairie Creek Cemetery Children of MARY MILLER and FREDERICK SOMMERS are: i. CLARA SOMMERS, b. September 1874, MN; m. HUBBARD SCHRUNK. More About HUBBARD SCHRUNK: Fact 1: Hubbard' in 1955 history ... name actually Hubert?? ii. JULIUS PHILEMON SOMMERS, b. February 19, 1873 On Parents Farm, Northfield, MN.; d. September 05, 1962, Waseca County MN.; m. ANNA WILHELMINA CHARLOTTE BUKER, March 02, 1904, On Buker Farm, Waseca County, MN. Child of MARY MILLER and PHILLIP BISHMAN is: iii. BENJAMIN BISHMAN, b. 1877, Waseca Co., MN. Best Regards, Kathy Hines in Minneapolis, MN

Cornelius Covenhoven VAN HORNE was b. in NY and came to Will co., IL in 1832 with his first wife Elizabeth VEEDER. He remarried in 23 Jan 1842 in Porter co., IN to Mary Mariah RICHARDS. I don't believe that Cornelius was living in Porter co., IN at the time of this marriage and wish I knew what his connection to Porter co., IN was. I know he was related to the Alyea's, but that connection was back a few generations. Several of us have been searching long and hard for information on Mary (one source calls her Mary Minier Richards/Riehard. Their first son was the famous railroad builder, William Cornelius VAN HORNE who built the Canadian railroad to the Pacific. William married Lucy Adaline HURD in Bloomington, IL. Does anyone know about Mary Mariah Richards? Lisa Smallley List manager INPORTER MORAY-CGA (Ray county, MO)

I have one Will County lady that I cannot find parents for. I know her date of death and it is too early for records at IRAD. She is Mary Jane (Barlow) Barnes and died August 28, 1885. I need someone to look for her death record in hopes it tells who her parents are. Her marriage license does not tell who her parents were. Mary Jane was the wife of William Purdy Barnes. Their marriage license says they were both "of Joliet". Thank you, Maggie
