Haven't posted to the board in awhile, and now that the new biographies on the web site from the 1878 book didn't help either, will try all of you again. Just maybe.... Looking for parents of J or Jay Morris, who was born in Wilmington in 1855. I believe they are Joseph and Catherine, and Joseph may have died in the Civil War. Jay had a brother, Oliver, and they ran away from home because of trouble with their step-father in the 60's/70's. Jay ended up in Omaha, don't know what happened to Oliver. Has anyone ever run across these names in their Will County searching??

Were birth records kept in Joliet, Will Co. for the years 1850-1854? If so, where can I locate them? Was there a Catholic Church in those years that might have kept Baptismal records? Am trying to verify a birth date for my g-grandmother, Jane LANGDON. Her death certificate gives her DOB as 29 Sept. 1850 in Joliet. 1860 and 1970 census information in NE list her age as 8 and 16 respectively. Can anyone direct me to a source in Joliet? Thanks, Susan in Iowa

Kathy, Thank you again for your assistance. I do have the death dates, and would love to have copies of the obits. I wasn't aware that they had an index. So, a letter writing I will go! Daryl McGrath
thank you Julia Bev
Bev....I'm sorry...we don't have any matches here with our Lydia Pierces. The Lydia Cole, daughter of Lydia Pierce, I was referring to..was born about 1785 in NH. So, our lydia Pierce was born about 15-20 years before that at least. Did you look at joliet in the census? > Kathy Z. Kathy....thanks for the above info....yes...I am aware of John and M. C. Bissell...and know who they trace back to. Yes, I have looked at Joliet in the census as well...and still do...fine tooth combing so to speak. The above John Bissell...his father Aaron came to Joliet about 1844 and died there. We haven't found his widow Mary, in the 1850 census yet...it would be curious as to where she was.I didn't find her again until 1870...where she appears in the new CD index of Illinois, in Joliet (about 90 years old I think). Aaron Bissell and M. C. Bissell (Martin C. Bissell) were brothers I think (don't have the stuff off the top of my head). Martin was very wealthy...and you can ususally find writeups about him in your local history books on Joliet. He was involved in Canal building...had financial interests in LOTS of places around the country. I believe in Joliet, he may have owned a quarry. I took a bunch of info about him from the Joliet City directories as well....just in case. He had one very interesting quirk...he was a big supporter of a very unusual religion. I can't remember the name of it...but it had a kind of Walden's Pond flavor to it...and was very popular with the ~arts~ crowd and some famous people of the day....Martin had no children of his own..but gave some of his money to neices and nephews...and then the bulk of the money went to the church. Before Martin came to Joliet...in 1850, he had been in Michigan, trying his hand at farming?...and in his household evidently, was a John Bissell born Germany. We think he is the same John Bissell who appears in 1860 McLean Co and then appears in Joliet with wife and kids....I got his probate from Will Co, while I was there. I know his family forward...but NOT who his own father was. This guy is a bit of a mystery....a BISSELL born in Germany and associated with CT Bissells. It's possible Martin and Mary just took the kid in and he adopted their name. Who knows. In any case....we haven't made a connection to these people...and that's been for the past 25 years. They were the first ~pick~ of the Bissells because of their location. Oh well. Thanks for taking the time to send me the info...you never know when it's going to turn out to be something we had never seen before. If you happen to run across Mary anywhere ..... <grin> Julie Bissell Tupker Unfortunately, we have never been able to make a connection with the above Bissells....and none were there at the time Pierce Bissell was....except for possibly widow , Mary....and we can't even find her anywhere in 1850 , let alone Joliet.
Kathy, What are the Will County Pioneers? If you have a death location for your ancestor, have you tried to locate his probate record in that county? Kathy
Julie! I was preparing some stuff for a talk on genealogy that I am giving this thursday and I ran across 1873 atlas of will county joliet lithographs of John BISSELL's residence M.C.BISSELL's residence Any connection? Did you look at joliet in the census? Kathy Z.
FYI -- The complete biographies from the 1878 History of Will Co is now online. Thanks go to Margie Glenn. To use it, go to the Will Co webpage, click on "Biographies". From there you can either click on one of the "Surname" links, or one of the "Township" links. All names mentioned in the biographies are indexed by surname and township. There is also a link to "Photos from the book" which contains all of the photos from the book. Margie has indicated that there is a section in the back of the book of land owners, and says that some of those people did not have biographies on them. She is thinking about scanning those in, after she catches her breath, and I will post them when I receive them. Thanks for the info you sent. This is very possibly a brother of my friends great grandmother. She was married by the time these children were born, but Lizzie is possibly her niece, and also Elizabeth was married to Christian Mueller, possibly the child of that given name was named for him? Thanks again Susan
Hi Daryl, I checked the various spellings (over 30 of them too many to just type to you)and none matched the given names you are looking for. However if you have exact dates of death, you can request obits from: 1-joliet public library reference dept. and possibly 2-wilmington public library which has a complete obit index for their area newspapers from abt. 1860 up(because catherine was buried in florence twp which is right next to wilmington) 3-get the clerk of the will county circuit courts office to do a search of their probate index for your ancestors. then IF probate does exist ask for copies of letters of administraton or sometimes called proof of heirship. If you don't have death dates and there are probates(both men and women now),the probate record will give you the death date. Kathy Z.
Thank you for the information you sent. It does not appear to be the same person, since I have just gotten info that he was born at Trier, Germany and his father at Lahr, Germany which is just NW of Trier, near Bitburg. Again Thanks Susan
Thank you for the informatin on locating a Will County History. Susan
