Hi Susan, Grundy county does not have their marriage records on the illinois marriage index. Write to the grundy county clerk. If they have it, charge is about $2.00 Kathy
Kathy, Is the Oakwood cemetery on line some where? Or do I need to snail mail Mr. Iverson? Do you have an address for him? Hi All, I've been researching too much today and my mind has drawn a total blank. How would I go about finding out if a pension file exists for a person from Will County? I've been to Ancestory, I've been to the Illinois Archives and I've got my list of Thomas Manning (5). For the life of me I cannot remember how I went about getting William Manning's pension file 15 years ago, and now with the advent of the computer, its got to be easier than this *grin* Am I right, that if they didn't marry there would be no pension file? Or if they at least didn't live long enough after the war to apply for a pension? I cannot find Thomas with the rest of family anywhere. I'm making a leap that he served around the same time as his brother, William. If there is no pension record, I know I should start with the military record and see what it tells me. Can anyone here tell me what is normally in a Civil War Military File? *sigh* I need to go to bed ... my dreams last night were spent imagining I was opening up filing cabinets, finding all these records ... hehehe ... guess I'm in for more of the same :) Maybe Thomas will pay me a visit and tell me where to find him :) Thanks! Am trying to locate the marriage record of William M. LANGDON and Margaret THOMAS, around 1850 in either Will or Grundy Co. Various info. places them in Joliet, Minooka, and Morris between the years 1848-1850 or 51. Their oldest child, Jane, was said to have been born in Joliet in 1850, but family lore says that William and Margaret were married in Minooka, IL. Are marriage records kept for those years? If so, where would I write? (they are not in the IL marriage index that is online.) Thanks for your help. Susan R., in Iowa
Hi Everyone, Spent the day trying to trace the siblings and children of my William Manning and I came across the following census record after Kathy's help this morning: Hannah MANNING married John Hennessy in Will County on January 8, 1861 This Hannah, also known as Joanna, was born between 1840-1841 (based on various census records) in Fishkill, Duchess County, New York and was the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Manning, sister of William Manning, all who immigrated from Ireland in 1846. I located the Hennessy family living 51 households away from the Manning family in the 1860, Channahon, Will County, IL. John (b. 1833) was listed with his family, including some brothers: Joseph (b. 1844) and James (b. 1846). Sorry but I didn't take a very good record of this. The family is located in Channahon, Will County and is the 279th household listed. Just thought I would throw this out there if anyone had a Hannah Manning Hennessy in their tree. Thanks! Hello List :) First, Kathy ... THANKYOU for finding this for me ... I am going to retrace your steps today .. I have been up on the Illinois State Archive page, but I hadn't had a chance going through the Will County Cemetery listing yet. That Elizabeth and Michael have to be my great-great-grandparents :) :) :) :) :) I do have the civil war pension file on William, but it didn't give hardly anything on his parents or immigration. I didn't get the military file ... are you suggesting that I also get that? Thank you again so veryyyyyyyyyy much :) Lori At 02:48 AM 2/1/00 -0800, [email protected] wrote: >Hello! > >I am researching the surname of Manning in Will Co., 1856-1900 in >Channahon, Will Co., Illinois >Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2000 11:17:32 -0600 >From: "zavada" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Message-ID: <[email protected]> >Subject: Re: [ILWILL-L] Manning - Will Co - 1856 >Content-Type: text/plain; > charset="iso-8859-1" >Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > >Hi Lori, >St. Patrick's cem.,joliet up on the net through will county site >Elizabeth MANNING wife of Michael died 26 aug 1881 age 75 years >Elizabeth C. Could it be that William became naturalized by virtue of his Union army service? If so, there might be new and strangely different places to research! Hello! I am researching the surname of Manning in Will Co., 1856-1900 in Channahon, Will Co., Illinois Here is the narrative that I have: WILLIAM MANNING was born near the city of Cork, Ireland, on August 12, 1835. In 1844 his father (MICHAEL MANNING) and his mother (ELIZABETH) emigrated to the United States, and located in Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York, the subject of this sketch, with the other children following in 1845. The family remained in New York, engaged in the nursery business and farming, until 1856, when all moved to Will County, Illinois and settled on a farm. MICHAEL MANNING was born Bet. 1801 - 1802 in Ireland, and died Bet. 1874 - 1876 in Channahon, Will Co., Illinois. He married ELIZABETH Bet. 1833 - 1835 in Ireland. She was born Bet. 1810 - 1812 in Ireland, and died Bet. 1880 - 1900 in Channahon, Will Co., Illinois. Children of Michael and Elizabeth who would have been with them in Channahon are: WILLIAM MANNING, b. August 12, 1835 in Ireland; JOANNA (HANNAH) MANNING, b. Bet. 1840 - 1841 in Ireland; THOMAS MANNING, b. 1844, Ireland; ELIZABETH (LEDA) MANNING, b. Bet. 1847 - 1848, New York; BARTHOLOMEW MANNING, b. Bet. 1849 - 1850, New York In 1861, William enlisted in the 39th regiment of the Illinois volunteers at Camp Douglass, Chicago, Illinois. His rank was that of 1st class musician. During the time of September 1861 until June 1862, he was enlisted with William C. Harrah and C. Harrah. He was discharged on June 4, 1862. On April 8, 1863, William married Apaline D. Harrah, sister of of William C. Harrah in the town of Morris, Grundy Co., Illinois Children of William and Apaline while they were in Channahon: FRANCIS (FRANK) MANNING, b. April 02, 1864, Illinois; d. Unknown. WILLIAM E. MANNING, b. December 26, 1865, Illinois; d. Unknown. If there is anyone familiar with this family or can aid me in the research, I would be most grateful. I've not been able to find William's naturalization, although he indicated that he'd been naturalized in either 1870 or 1890. I've not been able to find the death records for Michael and Elizabeth, nor where they are buried. I am also very interested in the other members of William's family, as only he has been researched. Thank you! Lori Our Mixed Nuts .. err .. Roots http://www.redrival.com/alana
I'll have to look up the given name, but I have a Manning in my tree. Clarence Jorgenson of Manhattan, Illinois married Margaret (I believe) Manning. She died about a year ago. Here is the ancestor I am searching for information on: Worthy Wilcox. I have one source that states Worthys year of birth as 1843 in Ellington, NY to a Milo Wilcox and whose mothers name was Martha. In the 1860 Census of Chautaugua County, NY a Worthy Wilcox (age 17) is listed with a Lewis Wilcox and his family. Worthy is listed as a farm laborer. I do not know what relation Lewis is to Worthy or maybe he isn't related. It would make him the right age. The next evidence I have of him is in Will county, Illinois, in the land records he purchased land in 1868, the same year my ggrandmother was born. Children were Lottie Emma (later married J.D. Mitchell), Lucy A.(Barnes, married name), Tom Wilcox and two other sisters of which I only know their married names (Winder of Omaha and Lorimar of Kansas City). I recently received Lucys marriage licenses which list Worthys wifes name as Eliza Breen. This marriage license states that Lucy was born in Massachusetts. J.D. Mitchell and Lottie Emma's children were born in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Their names were: Elsie (1884 KS), Roy (MS 1887), Josie (1889 KS), Isata (1897 in KS), Mable (1900 in OK), John D (1903 OK), Thelma (1908 in OK). Does any of this ring any bells to anyone on the list? Diana in Oklahoma
Does any have information regarding the Oakwood cemetery in Joliet? I'm looking for John Ellwart and his wife. His wife's name has been spelled many different ways, Apollonia, Evaline, Adeline. I believe they may both be buried in the Oakwood cemetery. Mike Fox
