    1. [ILWILL-L] Probate and Will Records
    2. Lori Stevens
    3. Goodmorning :) Was just going down my mental genealogy list of things that I wish I knew about and I realized that I hadn't asked about probate and recordings of wills....duh she says to herself, wouldn't you like to know who Michael bequeathed all that land too *grin* I found out yesterday after calling a very nice lady by the name of Sue, in the County Recorder's office, that they couldn't do searches of deeds. That I'd have to have the text id number. Can someone tell me if the county recorder also holds the probate records? At least I have a year of his death. Oh and Kathy, I figured out who was the other Elizabeth buried next to Michael and his wife ... its the Mary that was born to William and Apaline (William was Michael's son) ... at least I think its Mary :) They had the same year of birth, and her name could have been Elizabeth Mary Catherine Manning. I'm going to send Jan Gould a request for search on death records for this Elizabeth C. as she died after the time frame that is indicated on the website. I keep mulling over Kathy's question about what am I looking to find ... I just want to paint the picture of this family, I want to give color to the records that I have found, I want to celebrate the immigrant life of Michael and his family. Have a great weekend everyone!! Lori

    3. Goodmorning Michele :) Its probably Hannah's husband :) Could you tell me alittle more about this militia roll? When I got William Manning's pension application, it stated that he was a 1st class musician and that he enlisted from Camp Douglas in Chicago. I'm unsure what 2nd class reserves means? William did only serve 90 days. He also served with his future brother-in-laws, William C. Harrah and C. Harrah. 1. [ILWILL-L] Land Patent Info Lacking
    2. Lori Stevens
    3. Hi Kathy :) Yesterday, Michelle sent me a few files that were the answer to my dream ... I think I can figure out where Michael Manning's land was located by superimposing the map she sent me. If I cannot do it that way, the land records would give me the exact location. What am I looking for in those land records? Just trying to reach out and touch them :) I've seen other deed info, and the most they usually have in addition to the land location is the name of friends and witnesses. You said weather is restrictive at this time of year? Can you give us a glimpse into what life is like in Joliet? I was born and raised in Southern California and now live in Denver, so I at least know what Winter is like *grin* Perhaps you know of a URL that gives one a "glimpse into the life" of a Channahonian? This list has been great and I really want to thank everyone that has helped. If I can ever do anything from the state of Colorado, please let me know. Lori

    3. Hi Adrianne: There are records for Public Illinois records and there are records from the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM site is at: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ It has a nice searchable index and it now covers more states than it used to when I first found it. Lori

    1. [ILWILL-L] Louisa Britt Barr, Joliet, IL
    2. Thomas Daniel Knight
    3. Hello, I am trying to locate information about my relative Louisa Britt Barr. I know she was living in Joliet, IL, in 1951, 1958, and 1963. She was born in Columbus, GA, in 1906 or thereabouts. Her family moved to Montgomery, AL, by about 1920, and she may have married James Worrell Barr there after 1926, when she is listed as Louisa Britt, student, in a city directory. I would like to know if Louisa died in Joliet, or what happened to her. I am especially interested in finding names of her children, perhaps from an obituary. A cousin produced, with no source, the statement that Louisa died 18 June 1968. I do not know if she is buried in Joliet? Can anyone suggest a likely cemetery I might try? Her family were Baptists and Methodists while she lived in Alabama, and I suspect that she kept her religious ties. Since she was from Alabama, though, if she died in Joliet, she may be buried in a large city cemetery. I have no idea what happened to her husband James W. Barr or whether he died before or after her. So far, I have found no matches for either of them in the Social Security Death Index. Can anyone suggest how I might proceed in order to find out more about Louisa and her family? I have no idea when she moved to Joliet. Where would I have access to city directories? I live in Georgia and so am not making much progress with finding more about this family. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Sincerely, Danny Knight

    2. Kathy & Joy, Thanks for the info on the loc to search land records. I checked IL and didn't find the people I was looking for. I know where there land was, but just wondered if they bought it from the government. I also went to the Iowa rootsweb page, but was not successful in locating a link to the Iowa land sales. Will keep trying. Thanks again, Adrianne

    3. Morning Lori, Probably did buy the land from a private individual rather than a federal sale. All the records are up for land sales for illinois. I can do a look up on land records but without a date it will take about two hours to do the search and I don't live in Joliet so at this time of the year-the weather is a restrictive factor. What besides location do you expect to find in land records? Kathy

    1. [ILWILL-L] Land Patent Info Lacking
    2. Lori Stevens
    3. Hi List, I was up on the BLM site this morning, thinking I would for sure find land patent information on my 3rd-grandfather, Michael Manning. Not only did the 1870 census indicate that he owned land (real estate and personal estate was valued at $8000), but Margie found his wife Elizabeth as a land owner in 1878 ... thank you Margie :) :) :) So now my question ... what would it mean if I didn't find any land patent information? Does this just mean that the Manning's bought their property from a private individual rather than homesteading or doing a cash sale with the Federal Government? Could it mean the BLM doesn't have all its records up yet? And another question for you wonderful list members ... is there anyone here that does deed searches? I'm willing to hire a researcher in the Will County area, and/or Channahon area to help me get closer to the homestead of my Manning's for a possible trip this summer to pay my respects. Thank you! 2. Hi, I noticed the exchange between Kathy and Lori. I was just wondering if one of you could send me the URL for the BLM site. I would like to see if some land owned by my g-g-grandfather in Illinois and in Iowa would be in there. 3. Kathy, Boy, now I really have my work cut out for me. HA. I have been researching these names in NE because that's where my direct line of Langdons and Thomases moved in 1854-1870. 3. Michele, Thanks for looking for me. Someone did find it under the spelling "Langan" and Margaret Thomas. I would not have thought of looking under the mis-spelling. I would like the obit. of Thomas Langdon, if it's not too much trouble. Some of the Langdon brothers stayed in IL rather than go to NE with William's family. Would be nice to see if this Thomas was a descendant of one of them. Every little piece fills in part of the puzzle, doesn't it?
