Unfortunately, Julie, the land records are still a mess. I tried to use them, at the Recorder's office last year -- they looked like they were shuffled! After two visits, I gave up. Larry
I am contemplating a trip next week...with a possible stop again in Joliet to look at land records. Can anyone tell me if the situation with the index microfiche has been fixed...that is....are they still hopelessly out of order? Also, is there any way to look at the original index books...or were they tossed...or is that allowed at all? The last time I looked at land records in Will Co was about 4 years ago...and though I knew my gg grandfather was shown as a land owner, his name didn't appear in the land indexes...but we have no way of knowing whether that was because the particular microfiche that held his entry was out of order...or even missing. Dear Kathy, Again, Thank you very much, Kathy. You have been of great assistance. I really appreciate your help. You seem to always find places to, look that I have not. Many thanks. Very sincerely, mickey Vande Kamp
Dear Hal, A "Danl" Geason age 30 is listed two dwelling away from John Nolan in the 1860 census in the town of Peotone (Pg. 344 ) I placed the ( ) around the page number, because I do not believe it is the Official page number, just the number on the page when it was filmed. I made the copy of the census before I knew about the importance of the supervisor and enumerator district numbers. The census was taken on 23 of July , 1860. Daniel was a farmer and had 1600 real estate and 400 personal real estate and was born in Ireland as was his wife Bridget age 30. They had at least two childeren of their own Julia age 4 and John age 1. There was another child named Michael Aom? age 13. I believe all three children were born in Ills. By 1870, John is found on pg. 12 dwelling number 79 age 48 in the township of Peotone Will County, Ill. taken Aug 24, 1870. I do not have a copy of the census as it was so very difficutl to read. I do not know if Gleason was still there at that time or not. Hope this will be of some help to you. I know nothing more than he was supposedly John's brother-in-law. Sincerely mickey
For Mickey & Hal, Connection maybe through DARMODY(anne wife of John NOWLAN,etc.) John Noland brother in law to Daniel GLEASON from 1878 history of will co. Peotone township"John Noland and Daniel Gleason, two Irishman, and brothers in law, were here in 1855. They both removed from the township but a short time since. Noland still owns a farm here." also a Daniel GLEESON(wife Bridget)has several children buried in Mt. Olivet cem.,wilmington lot 214. In lot 216 are the burials of John NOWLAN and his wife Ann. ELWOOD,will county is in jackson township. Just above wilmington twp. About 8 miles away from each other. No catholic cem. in jackson twp. and no library or newspaper in elwood.Try wilmington public library. Also illinois state land records NOWLAN John bought 120 acres peotone township 19 Nov 1853 section number 7. Andrew bought railroad land peotone twp section 18,31 Oct 1872 GLEESON Daniel bought land Kendall Co. 19 Mar 1846 Daniel bought canal land Kendall Co. 9 May 1851 I didn't check every variantspelling of the names. illinois state marriage index shows catherine DARMODY married Patrick GLEASON will county 18 oct 1862 Good Hunting Kathy
Mickey I am curious about your inquiry. My direct line ancestors in Elwood, Will Co., IL are Charles Daniel Wickes and his wife Emeline H. Gleason. The middle name of Daiel is actually Charles' mother's maiden name. The Daniel family came from Scotland. The Gleasons were from Delaware Co., NY. Is there any connection here? Hal Bern Longview, WA
Hi everyone, Michele recently looked up information concerning John Noland and Daniel Gleason for me from "History of Will County, 1878 pub. by Wm. LeBaron Jr. & Sons. It referred to John Noland and Daniel Gleason as "brother's-in-law". We know nothing of my gr gr grandfather, John Noland (Nolan / Nowlan)'s sibblings, nor do we know anything of his wife Ann's or Mr. Gleason and his wife. Does anyone know what the connection is? 1) Gleason had married John's sister 2) Gleason had married Ann's sister 3) Gleason was the half brother of Ann (her maiden name was Darmody) 4) John was married to Gleason's sister before John married Ann??? 5) other Many thanks. mickey
Hi Listers, Hate to do this again after such a short time, but yahoo is starting to charge to allow me to access my genealogy account via a POP server, so I've changed my email address to: WillCoIL@bigfoot.com. Please use it, or use the web based email on the website to send mail to me. Both addresses will appear at the bottom of this and all future mail to the list. Happy Hunting, Ted

I'm trying to find my great grandfather (Heinrich or Henry Hellman(n)) on the 1900 census. In 1880 he was in Monee Township. Somewhere between then and 1900, I believe my great grandmother died and he remarried. He is not on the Monee census in 1900, so I'm thinking he might not have moved too far away but don't know what township or enumeration district to begin looking at. Can anyone help me or guide me to a map of the townships/districts that would?
