Sally, Thank you for the suggestion to check the Illinois Archives site for early land records. I have already done so however, and nothing comes up for Will Co for the people I want in the time frame. I know they were buying land there though, so the land deals had to be private purchases and sales. I can only hope that sometime, somebody or group makes it a ~project~ to clean up the microfiche indexes at the recorder's office in Will Co. It would be a daunting task. I haven't had time to call the recorder's office yet to see if any old book indexes were kept that could be accessed by appointment. When I get over my latest health hurdle with my heart, then possibly I can check that out, unless somebody else finds out sooner and posts the info to the list. Julie Bissell Tupker

Thanks for all the help on information on Will Co Land records. I have a little more time now to check into it further before I can go, due to continuing cardiac health problems. My vacation this week has been cancelled and I get to spend it doing cardiac stress tests instead. Hopefully, I can get some answers with a direct phone call to Will Co Recorder's office ....about still existing index books. Let's hope. For Maria, In will county, clerk of the circuit county,will county courthouse 14 west jefferson st.,joliet,il. Address on will county website under resources. BUT if you don't find in will county- LOTS of folks were naturalized in cook county(one of three different courts-some indexes microfilmed by mormons(BUT NOT will county) Kathy

Depends on where they were naturalized. If in IL, then you can write the Great Lakes Regional Office of NARA. Go to: http://www.nara.gov and click on the link for the "Regional Offices" -- it will give you the address as well as the email address. i dont think that you will have any luck trying to get them to look something up. i also live out of state and called them to ask if a subdivision still existed and was told that that information was public record and to come in and search. i told her that i was out of state and was told that there was nothing that she could do hope you have better luck than i did richard harrigan

Regarding Land Records, Contact Chicago Title and Trust Co.-ask where they now have the will county plat books(not in joliet anymore). You will need to know what township your ancestors where in and if you have it,legal description of land. IF you are basing land ownership on the 1878 listing of land owners-they may NOT have owned ANY land but only leased or worked it for someone else. The 1878 listing of will county land owners is very inaccurate. I suggest that you check elsewhere to verify land ownership-for instance-the illinois state land purchase index up on the net available through will county website under resources. You can order copies of these land records from the illinois state archives. Check for probate records-clerk of the circuit court,will county courthouse,14 west jefferson st.,joliet. There is a paper index to probates which starts in about 1836 to current. They are not easy to access but MUCH easier than land records in the will county recorders 0ffice. And if you find one has a great deal of genealogy info you can't find anywhere else. Such as death date and everyone's name in the family,etc. Also check illinois state database of civil war vets & 1929 honor roll of vets.(can get copies of these also. Can request a search of illinois state death records 1916-1945 IF you know location and approximate date(year only works). then you can request a search of appropriate library for an obit. COURT RECORDS GIVEN AWAY WHERE NOT LAND RECORDS,OR MARRIAGES,DEATHS,BIRTHS OR ADOPTIONS OR ANY OTHER VITAL RECORDS. They included only court records for civil court such as selling liquor on sunday,spitting on thew ground in a public place,bad debts,not cleaning up you property,making too much noise,etc. Hope this helps Kathy

Larry...and All, Thanks Larry, for the information on the fairly current status of the land records at Will Co. It saddens me to know that this mess exists with some fairly important records. Does anyone know if the old original land record index books still exist and if they can be accessed? Is there somebody in particular I should talk to if I go to the land recorder's office to ask about this? I have some people I wanted to check out in land dealings in the Joliet area from about the 1850 to the 1870 time frame. My previous attempt at looking at the Will Co land microfiche indexes was a disaster. I threw up my hand in dispair. Julie Bissell Tupker
