He enlisted in the 13th Ills. Regiment and listed Fenton, Whiteside, IL as home. James enlisted 24 May 1861. He was discharged on 28 Apr 1864. On the 1850 census at age of 16, James was living with his father and family in Delafield, Waukesha, WI. By 1877 he was married to Maria Elizabeth SCHUMACHER SPRINGER and living in Plainview, Wabasha, MN.
