    3. Marcia, Get online and look up the phone number for any of the LAW family in Whitside County - There are so many of them, you can't stir them with a stick. They all live in Sterling and Rock Falls. I bought my last car from one of them - but I doubt if he knows anything about his family - except that they have been in Whiteside County for generations. There is a Newman High School in Sterling. The Newman family is another old name in the county. I am the Co-Ordinator of the IL TRAILS Website for Whiteside, Carroll and Lee Counties.. so if you ever want to contribute any information just let me know. I can post what you do have - and it won't be long till you'll hear from others.. 3. Hi, I am new to your list and wonder if you can help me. I am looking at this family- James Dyer Law b 1827 m Sarah Minerva Newman on 1-7-1841 in Carroll Co. They had son James Monroe Law on 10-13-1864 in Morrisberg, Whiteside Co. What I am looking for is confirmation on Sarah's parents. In the 1850 census for Carroll Co there is a Levi and Catharine listed with their children still at home. Sarah is not listed because she would have already been married. My instincts tell me that they are her parents but wondered if anyone in Illinois could help me confirm that or had any other info. Thanks so much, Marcia K

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Zh.2ADE/1920.1.1 Message Board Post: It's certainly possible. In 1880, David was 50-years-old and Anna was 30, just six years older than David's only (as far as I can tell) surviving child out of six. Was eighteen the age of consent? If so, that wouldn't have been an issue for David & Anna, but maybe her family objected to her marrying a man 20 years her senior. Or, like you said, maybe it was just a nice wedding trip to Iowa. Some of the family had settled in Iowa, in Jasper and Mahaska counties, but that seems a little far to travel for a wedding. David's parents were living with him in 1870, but moved back to Wood County Ohio, where his father presumably died in 1874 - at least he was buried in Wood County in 1874. I don't know that David Kelly McCombs who married Rosetta is a relative, but I don't reject any possibilities. Thanks for looking.

It seems quite a few people decided to do that - to be married instead of staying here in Illinois - due to several reasons: family disagreements, the difference in state law concerning age of concent for marriage and just plain old elopements.

David remarried to Anna sometime around 1870-1871 (on 1870 census, he is single, by 1880, he and new wife have children ages 9, 6, 3 (Yorla or Zorla, David, & Henry.) David and Rebecca had a son, William, born abt 1855; there's a marriage record for William McCombs to Emma D Hawkins in Whiteside County 12 Aug 1880, seems likely it's this son. I would deeply appreciate any information on this family; David's death date, Anna's maiden name, what happened to any of the children, are there descendants still around . . . Thanks for anything you can tell me.
