Hi, I am looking for a death date of a young girl, Penny Weaks who was hit by a car on Route 84 between Albany and Route 30, sometime in 1973 or 1974. I just was wondering when this happened. Thanks, Sheila
Hi. Can you give me more info on this? Was it early inthe morning and would she have been on her way to school? My aunt hit a girl after she took her husband to work one day and the child died. I have a clipping about it that was in my mothers things when she died. Thanks! I had found the Patches living with the Porter family but hadn't thought about them being relatives of his. Guess I'll check out Mrs Porter and see what I can find. I'm glad to see the marriage record for Sarah. I had found her sometimes, I thought, but never with Emma Jane (who gets called Jane or Jennie in most records), and then she's not listed as a granddaughter but as a domestic servant or housekeeper for the Fones family, which sounded a little peculiar. Seth & Emma Jane moved to Sherman County, Nebraska, where my grandma was born; sometime during the grasshopper plagues they were driven out by the grasshoppers, and I seem to remember Grandma C saying that when they left the farm, they left the plates on the table, covered their heads and ran for the buggy, and just left. Eventually they wound up in Jefferson County, Kansas, but I've never found Eleanor (my grandma) with them, alas..... Eleanor earned her way through school-- for getting her teaching certificate (back in the days when college degrees were not the norm for teachers, but kids still learned to read and spell) at McPherson College in Kansas-- she earned her money by giving piano lessons, and she was a very good piano player; she also paid for her piano that way. I figure that tells me something about what kind of people the Slawsons were. She taught school for quite a few years, married and had 4 kids, and when her husband died, she became county clerk for several years. Then she went back to school and got her LPN certificate. She was one of those people who could Cope. Thanks again. Jan T
I'm looking for information on the parents of Emma Jane Patch, born November 9, 1853, in Whiteside County. She died in 1918 and is buried in Jefferson County, KS. We think her father was Martin S Patch born c1828, but these folks seem to be elusive. Her mother may have been a Margaret or Martha Fones, but I think Emma's mother died when Emma was very young, and Martin may have remarried. Family tradition says that when Emma was two years old, she was living with her Fones grandparents and that Grandpa once took her to the Lincoln-Douglas debates, which she remembered mostly because he upended a barrel for her to sit on while he listened to the speeches. Is anybody following the Patch & Fones families? Do these folks sound familiar? Jan T

He was a carpenter by trade, and also followed farming near Spring Hill, while he was a resident of Portland. He now (1877) lives in Nebraska. Mr. Slawson married Miss Rachael M. Fuller, in 1833. Their children are: Andrew, who married Miss Catharine Joice, and lives in Missouri; Jesse D., who married Miss Lucy Kinney, and lives in Nebraska; Charles H., who married Miss Lydia Briggs, and lives in Kansas; Earl B., who married Miss Cordelia Brown, and lives in Nebraska; Howard F., who married Miss Mary Hepworth, and lives in New York; Seth H., who married Miss Jennie Patch, and lives in Portland; and Mary L., wife of Merritt Clilfton, living in Portland." I did not find Hiram or Ira G W Chase in any of my resource books. Lucy Chase living with them in 1850 might be a good lead for you. Good luck in your search. My elusive ancestor is Rachel or Rachael M Fuller, born c1810 in New York state, we think. She married Jesse D Slawson, also born c1809 in Oneida County, New York. In 1870 they were living in Portland, Spring Hill post office, Whitside County. Their children were Earl B, Mary L (married Merritt Clifton), Jesse D(jr), Seth H, Howard Frank, Albert R, Andrew EH, and Charles Henry Slawson This week I stumbled on to another tidbit which may explain why their marriage has been so hard to find. A biography of one of their sons, Earl B Slawson, surprised me by mentioning the Civil War service of two of his half brothers, Hiram Chase and Ira G W Chase. This would suggest that Rachel Fuller had been married to somebody named Chase prior to her marriage to Jesse D Slawson. Since these two fellows would be blood kin of mine, I'm curious about where they went, whether they survived the Civil War, whether they had families. And we still don't know who Rachel Fuller's parents were. Is anybody else following these folks? Jan T
The best place to start is at the Sterling Library which is in the old section of Sterling right next to County Market Grocery Store off Locust Street.. They have all the Histories of Whiteside County - several books of obits/weddings etc and Marilyn Anderson is the Genealogist on staff and is there every day.. She also can lead you to the Historical and Genealogical societies. They are open regularly 6 days a weeks but will probably be closed either Friday or Monday following the 4th.. ON my website http://www.iltrails.org/whiteside/ is the link to their website - you can email them and ask the hours.. The Morrison Library is also linked from that page - they too have regular hours daily -but check for the 4th closing. Morrison also has good resources for Whiteside County and also has obit collections.. After that - try the courthouse in Morrison for anything else. I just got home from their myself.. The Sterling Library is your best bet. You can research microfilm for obits for newspapers. They also have cemetery info as well as county histories. The morrison library has a good collection of family histories for the Morrison area. You may want to call and see if they have any or your families on file. I would focus on obits as they will give you the most information. Good luck!
Hello Listers, I am looking for the best places to do research in Whiteside Co. My dad and I will be in Illinois (from California), 30 June - 7 July and will have only 2 - 3 days during that time to do research. We would like to make the best use of our time. The surname is KIER / KEIR. We already have many of the birth, marriage, and death dates and would like to fill in gaps with other information (newspaper articles, business ads, city directories, County histories, school, church, military info...) Towns that we know our relatives lived in include: Union Grove, Unionville, Sterling, Morrison, and, for a short time, Chicago. Time frame is early 1850's to early 1900's. Where would be the best places to look and how can I find out the days and times they would be open (given the holiday weekend)? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Debbie
