I would appreciate having a copy of the two pages he is listed in the Bastian Book. Is there any possibility of buying a copy of the Bastian Book? Is it available? I would be interested.

There is a single paragraph about Jesse Scott, a pioneer settler of Como, he used a horse power keelboat to get to the area and then operated it in the area. Did not explain how it worked, must have been some kind of treadmill or turnstile. There is a picture of "the ferry at Como", but it is NOT clear if the ferry is the boat of Jesse Scott, or if the picture is just coincidentally next to the paragraph on Jesse.

    3. Just thought I would ask again, if anyone would like a picture of the old Oak Grove Academy in Empire, now Emerson, please let me know. My Deets and Carolus ancestors went there when they were growing up. I would say the picture is circa late 1880's, but cannot say for sure. Just write me if you or your historical society would like one. Thanks, Matthew Aamot _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Illinois Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Whiteside/708 Surname: GOEHRING, CARLEY ------------------------- Thanks for the suggestion of checking the actual marriage records, Bob. I'm hoping the ages in the census are correct, because that would mean this is very likely the right Carley family. The census even shows an uncle (Benjamin Reynolds) who would have been the right age to have been in the Civil War.

    3. Posted on: Whiteside Co. Illinois Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Whiteside/707 Surname: Carley, Reynolds ------------------------- Kris I don't blame you! 1880 - 1849 is 31 years, subtracted from Phoebe Reynold's 43 in the 1880 census makes her 12 when she married William Carley. But...the marriage information was a direct copy and paste from the index, so is what was there and I doublechecked the 1880 censu and it does show 43. It looks like one of the records is wrong and I would suspect the marriage record. Or, there is another William Carley in Henry County who married Phoebe Reynolds! In the 1880 census, there first child was born around 1862, so perhaps this was a keystroke error and the marriage occurred in 1859 instead of 1849...Phoebe would have been 22 and having their first child a couple years later makes sense. You would have to probably actually check the Henry County Marriage records to verify this. Bob

The 1880 census showed that Phebe Reynolds was 43, while the IL marriage index shows that she married in 1849. Talk about a child bride!

I have been down the road you took looking at what I can find on the net plus checking out the couty court house, the Whiteside County Historical Society, etc. Did strike pay dirt at the library. Sharon Walsh had filed a lot of history on the John and Mary Beehler family. Via John came Isaac came Amelia that married Alphonse Dieckman but I do not know when or where except it was in Davenport, Iowa in 1898 that the first child of Alphonse and "Millie" was born. Thanks. I checked the Illinois Marriage index to try to narrow it down and did NOT find any Dieckman or Humbert Marriages in Whiteside County. Also checked a couple other indexes covering Marriages, Deaths and the 1890 Tax Role and found no Dieckman's. Most of the published data that I have is 1900 or earlier, if they were in the county later, I would not have any info. Bob

    3. Posted on: Whiteside Co. Illinois Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Whiteside/701 Surname: Carley ------------------------- I checked the 1870 and 1860 Whiteside Census. No Carley's in 1860. In 1870, in Prophetstown Twp. there was a John Carley and wife, young child, older lady Mary (prob. John's mother) and a James about the same age, prob. John's brother. No Susan. Also, Bent Wilson mentions a James Carley who came to the Sterling area in 1838. None of this helps with Susan's parents..but you never know! With the dates you give, I would really try to get a death certificate for her from where she died in Minnesota. I suspect there is some relationship...seems a little odd that John Carley was in Prophetstown in 1870, but in 1880 in the same area the only Carley was William and family. There were several Carley's in the 1900 census and in the 1950's, the Buick dealership in Morrison was run by a man named Carley. Bob
