    3. Posted on: Whiteside Co. Illinois Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Whiteside/753 Surname: Gerten, Starck, Spark ------------------------- Found two references, first in Bent-Wilson's History of Whiteside County, pub. 1877: "Gerten Bros. and the Messers. Spark have each a good sized pipe manufactory, and each of them turn out annually a large number of boses of pipes, which find a market in all sections of the country." In the Bastian History, pub. 1968 is a longer description: "Back in 1868, Nick Gerten, who had been living in Fulton for about a year, packed some samples of clay and returned to Germany. There, under tests, the clay proved to be excellent pipe material. In 1869, he returned to Fulton, accompanied by his parents, brothers and sisters. They moved into a house east of the Water Works and started to manufacture clay pipes. The Gertens were accompanied by Charles Starck who worked with them for a time and then went into business for himself. About 1884, Peter Starck, Jr., arrived in Fulton. He started a factory in 1896. By 1897, there were four manufactories in the city. They were run by John Gerten and Henry Gerten, Nick Gerten, Peter Starck, Jr., and Nick Starck. At peak production as many as 72,000 clay pipes were shipped monthly. Most of them went by steamboat to river-towns. They were shipped in barrels and packed in straw. Three of the factories closed in the early 1900s but Peter Starck's lasted until the 1930's. In late years, most of the clay pipes were used in shooting galleries or for souvenirs. Some of the pipes and cigar holders were covered with a yellowish glaze, veritable poor-men's meerschaums." Checking the 1870 Census, in Fulton I find: Gerten, Mathias 62 M PR x x x Peter 28 M PR x x x Pipemaker Nicholas 27 M PR x x x " Henry 25 M PR x x x " John 23 M PR x x x " Catharine 21 F PR x x Dom Mathias 17 M PR x x Catharine 15 F PR x x Regena 11 9 F PR x x John 9 M PR x x Also, in the Mortality tables, Gerten, Mary 54 F PR x x Mar married housekeeper. Interesting group, you probably know, the x's mean, Father foreign born, mother foreign born, and became citizen. This probably means that the last five were born in the United States, so they did NOT HAVE to become a citizen, they were born citizens! While two names repeat, John and Catharine, I suspect that all were children of Mathias and Mary...and that their formal german names included at least one middle name which is probably what they went by, like Catharine Anna and Catharine Marguerita... In the Naturalization index, Henry, John, Matthias, Nicholas and Peter were all naturalized between 1876 and 1884. Bob

(If you have been to the site recently, you may need to click REFRESH on your browser to see the new material.) There are other pages which might help you gain more understanding about poorhouses. These are all links on the left side of the homepage and include: the HISTORY page, FEATURED ARTICLES page (which contains links to especially good poorhouse photo stories or newspaper articles, etc.) or the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS. Hope you enjoy the site. Feel free to post any information you may have about that or any other poorhouse ... either on the MESSAGE BOARD or by e-mailing me. 1. Hiram and Walter Harmon
    2. Arlene, After reading your response, I went to the FamilySearch.org and dug through some of my old records from the local Family History Center. From that info, I discovered that my Walter (b. 1798), Hiram (b. approx 1804), Samantha (b. 1816 or 1818) and Elizabeth (b. 1808 or 1810) were all siblings. Parents were Isaac Harmon and Mary (Polly) Rawson. There may have been as many as five other children in this family. It appears the children were either born in Tyringham or New Marlborough, Berkshire, Mass. Also, here is further info on marriage of Porter Joseph Harmon and Margaret Houston. Married 24 Jun 1880 in Morrison. Porter was age 61, Farmer, age 62. Margaret was 42, parents were Robert Houston and Penelope Wilkinson (this is my best guess of mother's name). Mrs. Robert Houston was the witness. I'm curious as to how you may be connected to my puzzle. If you'd like, please email me direct at [email protected] Thanks, Tracy Glatz

    3. Posted on: Whiteside Co. Illinois Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Whiteside/751 Surname: Bailey, Jenkins, Genkins ------------------------- There are several Bailey families in Whiteside, but Alexander and Mary J. Bailey first appear on the 1880 census in Hopkins Twp. There are a few other Bailey's in Hopkins also. To get a better fix on the family I checked back to the 1870 and 1860 census...didn't help much, but will post the results: 1860 Hopkins Twp. Bailey, Alexander M 46 M Merchant PA PA PA Mary F 38 M Wife PA PA PA Frank M 19 S Son Merchant IL PA PA Summary...Jacob would be the right age to be the father to Alexander, but he is not shown with a wife, and since he is shown as SINGLE in 1880 while his sister Sarah is WIDOWED, that would imply he was NOT WIDOWED, and prob. never married. So...it may be coincidental that two Bailey families from PA settled in Hopkins. I checked cemetery records in Hopkins, Morrison, etc. but did not find anything on the above. Not sure if any of this will help, but good luck! Bob

    1. Hiram Harmon
    2. Arlene Onken
    3. Tracy, Hiram Harmon was a native of Berkshire County, MA and came to Portland, Whiteside County, IL with Guy Ray in 1835. Guy Ray was also from Berkshire, MA and was married to three times: 1) Elizabeth Harmon, 2) Samantha Harmon, 3) Louisa Pomeroy. At the death of his first wife, he wrote to Samantha and asked her to come here, marry him and be a mother to his children. Family tradition says - Samantha was willing to do this but did not want to travel this far west alone. Supposedly, she was working in a tailor shop ran by Daniel Porter Brewer [either in Tyringham or Monterey, Berkshire County, MA]. Daniel Porter with his wife, Emeline Hollister Brewer, and son, Nathaniel Brewer, made the journey from Berkshire over the Erie Canal to the headwaters of the Ohio, down the river to the Mississippi, up the Mississippi to Rock Island, Illinois bringing Samantha to the area. Daniel Porter Brewer walked from Rock Island to Guy Ray's house and borrowed a team and wagon and went back after the rest of them. I am wondering if Elizabeth and Samantha were from that same family. Could Hiram have been, too? Hiram was a wagon maker by trade and may have been the first in the county. He lived in various parts of the county, was involved in various ventures, was struck by lightening in 1858 from which he did not recover for several years. He is now living in Colorado [1877] . Part of this is from my family's history and some from History of Whiteside County, Illinois by Charles Bent published in 1877. If you ordered the marriage license for Porter Harmon and Margaret Houston, did the application for the marriage license come with it. Who were the witnesses? Thanks Arlene Onken

    1. Census Lookup Request - Harmon
    2. I am new to this list and am hoping someone would be so kind as to perform some census lookups for me. I will list as much information as I know - hopefully this may help. First, Walter Harmon and Azubah Hyde were married 5 Feb 1818 in New Marlborough, Berkshire, Mass. Walter was probably born in 1798 in same location. Per Ancestry.com, he is listed on the 1860 IL Federal Census in Hopkins Township on page 816. Per the Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales Database, he is listed in 1849 as having purchased property in Whiteside Co, with adjoining tracts going to son Porter Joseph Harmon, and Hiram Harmon (unsure of relationship to Walter). Secondly, Porter Joseph Harmon was born 14 May 1819 in New Marlborough, Berkshire, Mass. Porter was married 25 Nov 1848 to a Rebecca Armstrong (possibly 2nd wife, d. March 1876) and they had a son, Walter Harmon, b. 19 Feb 1857 and a daughter Adaline. I believe their may have been as many as six other children to this marriage. In 1880, Porter remarried a Margaret Houston and per the marriage record, Porter's residence was listed as Mt. Pleasant. Walter (b. 1857) married Fannie Arnold 16 Feb, 1882. They had one child, Edward Joseph b. 9 Jan 1883 before moving on to the Clark Co. area of South Dakota. I believe Porter may have gone with them to SD. I would like any census information available on Walter (b. 1818) and Porter between 1850 and 1880. Please know that any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Tracy Glatz [email protected]

    3. Hello Everyone, I am looking for info on Frank, John, Thomas & Elizabeth Marshall, the Janvrin family and on the family of Archibald Knox all of Whiteside County. Elizabeth Marshall immigrated from England with her 3 sons, John, Thomas, & Frank. Frank married Clara Janvrin in 1868. Thomas married Anna Hancock, John either remained unmarried or she died young. Elizabeth Marshall must have remarried before 1860. I believe they came abt 1851. I find an Elizabeth Marshall buying land in Whiteside about that time. Frank was born in 1844 in England so they came sometime after that. As for the Knox family, I have a letter written to Archibald Knox by Thomas during a stay in the hospital during the Civil War. I would like to know more abt him. John was listed in his household as a laborer during the 1860 census. Any help will be welcome. Thanks in advance, Alinda

    3. Posted on: Whiteside Co. Illinois Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Whiteside/742 Surname: Plant, Oliver, Murray ------------------------- Just in case, I checked 1880 and in Sterling, on Market Street was: Plant, Ira M 68 M Carpenter CT CT CT Ellen J. F 57 M Wife VT IR IR Oliver, Ella F 26 M Dau IL CT VT Murray, Hattie F 19 M Dau Visitor IL CT VT Plus 3 others who were boarders. This is kind of interesting, a few inconsistencies (the census has lots of those!). The birth places of the parents of Ella and Hattie match Ira and Ellen although Ella at least was by Ellen (Jane)'s first husband, Henry born VT. Hattie is shown as married, but with her maiden name of Murray (Murry). Did she marry a Murray, or was this an error? Where was Ella Oliver's husband, hattie was shown as a visitor, but Ella seemed to be living with Ira and Ellen. She is shown as Married, not Widowed, so her husband must be around somewhere. OLIVER, STEPHEN F MURRAY, ELLA WHITESIDE 06/08/1876 / 00004188 I checked for Stephen Oliver, but he does not appear in the 1880 census in Whiteside. Bob
