    3. Hi Kathryn, Empire, now Emerson, is just a few miles west of Sterling. Empire began as a sawmill built by Hezekiah Brink on Elkhorn creek in the southwest quarter of Section 13. Post office opened as Empire Jan. 6, 1851. On Oct. 5, 1865 the office was moved to Galt one mile south and on the now Union Pacific railroad, mostly thought of as the Chi and Nwestern. Village of Empire became Emerson Aug. 4, 1891 and the post office was opened that day. Discontinued Feb. 28, 1935, later reopened about 1940. Now closed. But the few houses still remain as Emerson. This is from my book 'Post Offices of Whiteside co.' I have xerox copies of at least one postmaster appointment. Hope this helps. 3. Yes~According to the "History of Whiteside Co., Ills" by Bent-Wilson (1877) "The township of Erie ....upon the south and east is skirted by Rock river, the borders of the stream being fringed by timber of a fine quality. Rock Island county borders the township on the west and Newton and Fenton townships on the north. Erie Lake, a considerable sheet of water, as fair as a picture, lies just north of the village of Erie." Are you looking for a specifice family there? March 12, 1892 Geo. M. GREENMAN, and Mr. TEACH, his father-in-law, moved a part of their household goods from Rock Falls to this place last Wednesday. Mr. GREENMAN is to work this season for Geo. [Tip] DOW cured a felon for George FORWARD this week. He is a professional in that line. June 29, 1895 ATTENTION VOTERS Tampico, June 28th, 1895 Attention, please! Friday night you will be called upon to vote "For" or "Against" improving the condition of our school building. Are you in favor of uniform heat and good ventilation, with healthy children alive to their tasks or poorly ventilated air for the children passing the school day in drowsiness? The lower floors that keep the children's feet cold in the winter can be made warm only with furnaces. See how small the additional cost yearly for the eight xxx xxx xxx. The amount expended annually for our school is $2,100. The $124 (interest and principal) of the bonds to be met annually would be about 6 per cent. additional expense. If your school tax last year was $2, the additional tax will make your school tax $2.12. If $5, your school tax will be $5.30. If $10, your school tax will be $10.60, etc. Respectfully submitted George FORWARD L. J. KENDALL Fred W. SMITH Directors September 7, 1895 A. L. [Alvin] PIERCE called in to see us Wednesday and informed us that the lightning of the night before had killed two horses in his pasture a mile west of town. One of the horses belonged to Geo. FORWARD, and it was the best horse he had, the other one belonged to W.S. METCALF. Neither animal was insured. March 28, 1896 Mr. and Mrs. George FORWARD and Mrs. Sam TEACH visited Wm. FORWARD's last Friday. December 26, 1896 Miss Minnie CRADDOCK returned home from Dundee, Miss. last Wednesday. She will remain here some time visiting her parents, Geo. FORWARD and wife. November 6, 1903 Geo. FORWARD, who lives about a mile west of town, expects to move into the Peter HAGAN house this week.
