I know there are city directories and I wonder if anyone has any for the years 1884-1887. WILLIAM FLINN HAYDEN married HELEN SYKES of Morrison in 1886 in Morrison and I think he may have lived there for a while before moving to Kansas, then Chicago. He may have been living with his father, AMOS HAYDEN (d. 1890 in Chicago). I would appreciate knowing who might be able to check the directories if no one on the list has them. Thank you. Aloha List, About a year ago someone volunterred to to post all of the Schimmelpfenning/Schimmelpfenig/Schimmelpfennig they had seen in the 1900 census in Whiteside County. I believe there were 3. Is this still possible. I am hoping to find anything on this family. Have been only able to trace a Peter Schimmelpfenig. I know he had brothers - Henry, Fred or Ferdinand and a Charles or Carl. I know Fred married a Bertha RALEIGH, Henry a Lisie MAYBERRY and I do not think Charles married. For a year I have searched other lists and posted queries with no results on this Whiteside family. If anyone at all is able to look up this name I would be eternally gratefull. Thank you very much, Barbara

David~ From "History of Whiteside County Ills" by Bent-Wilson (1877) page 376: "William Hill was born in Rutland county, Vermont, in 1783, and came to Prophetstown in 1835. He came all the way from Vermont with teams, and was two months on the road, arriving at Prophetstown in the fall. He was a carpenter and wheelwright by trade, but became a successful farmer. His large family of sons were nearly grown up when he came, and they immediately made claims along what is now Washington street. Coming from New England, he appreciated the importance of schools, and the next year after his arrival succeeded in having a log school house built, which was used until 1841. This was the first school house in Prophetstown. Mr. Hill married Miss Susan Baker. Their children have been: J. Sullivan, who married Miss Rachel Belden, and lives in Prophetstown; Almira, who married J. Colin Southard, and is now dead; John, now dead; William, who married Miss Ann Smith, and lives in Prophetstown; Ezra, who married Miss Jane Underhill, and lives in Prophetstown; Fordyce, who married Miss Polly Wall, and lives in Prophetstown; and Joseph, who married Miss Martha Reynolds, and also lives in Prophetstown. Mr. Hill died in 1846, and Mrs. Hill in 1876. The Hill family have lived in Prophetstown since their arrival from the East. William lives on his valuable farm, and has done much to improve the breed of sheep, cattle, and hogs in the county. He has lately introduced the Holstein cattle, so celebrated for their dairying qualities. Among the positions held by him have been those of Supervisor and Justice of the Peace of the township. Joseph has also acquired a large competency by farming, and owns perhaps the finest farm in the town. During the present year, 1877, he has tried the experiment of tile draining, having laid about a mile of tiles. Ezra lives on Washington street, and has a fine farm, devoting his attention principally to raising hogs, in which he has been very successful." page 359: "Hiram Underhill was born in Dorsett, Vermont, in 1794, and came to Portland in 1838, remaining in the village of Portland until 1839, when he made a claim near Jefferson Corners. He married Miss Martha Washburn in 1813. Their children have been: Horace, who married Miss Irene Wellington, and is now dead; Julia Ann, who first married Benjamin Dow, and after his death, Jared Hurlburt, and now lives in Oregon; Abram, who married Miss Olive Marvel, and lives in Oregon; Jane, wife of Ezra W. Hill, living in Prophetstown; and Mary, wife of George Coon, living in Iowa." page 286-287: "The Congregational Church and Society of Lyndon was organized on the 27th of June, 1836, and was the first religious society organized in Whiteside county......The present (1877) trustees of the church are, Draper Richmond, Jerome Sands, and Edward Lancaster. Friday night you will be called upon to vote "For" or "Against" improving the condition of our school building. Are you in favor of uniform heat and good ventilation, with healthy children alive to their tasks or poorly ventilated air for the children passing the school day in drowsiness? The lower floors that keep the children's feet cold in the winter can be made warm only with furnaces. See how small the additional cost yearly for the eight xxx xxx xxx. The amount expended annually for our school is $2,100. The $124 (interest and principal) of the bonds to be met annually would be about 6 per cent. additional expense. If your school tax last year was $2, the additional tax will make your school tax $2.12. If $5, your school tax will be $5.30. If $10, your school tax will be $10.60, etc. Respectfully submitted George FORWARD L. J. KENDALL March 28, 1896 Mr. and Mrs. George FORWARD and Mrs. Sam TEACH visited Wm. FORWARD's last Friday.

Here's a few UNDERHILL articles from the Tampico Tornado newspaper: August 8, 1891 Miss Cora, Emma and Harry HOTCHKISS, Miss LAWRENCE, of Sterling, and Messrs. Grant CLEVELAND and Eugene UNDERHILL was [sic] callers at the GIFFORD house Sunday evening. January 13, 1894 Last Saturday Elder BARTLETT administered the rite of baptism to eleven converts, at the baptistery of the Baptist church of this place who were as follows: Mrs. Dr. S. M. GREEN, Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose SHERE, Mrs. V. McKENZIE, Mrs. FIELDS, Mrs. Frank COOLEY, Mrs. Jacob WINCHELL, Mrs. Flavel MORRILL, Mr. and Mrs. Jed McKENZIE and Mr. UNDERHILL. September 22, 1900 W. J. LOVE and wife returned from their visit to Belvidere last Saturday. They, in company with Emmet UNDERHILL and wife of Prophetstown drove across the country to that city to visit with the sister of Mrs. LOVE and Mrs. UNDERHILL. Mr. LOVE tells us they had a pleasant trip, saw lots of fine country and an enterprising manufacturing town that seemed to be prospering and everybody who wanted a job could find plenty to do in Belvidere. "It does one good," he says "to get out and see one's friends and to find out what other people are doing." September 26, 1903 Chancey McCLURE died Sunday night at 9:30 at his home north-west of here from the effects of a severe kick in the abdomen by a mule last Wednesday noon. Since his injury he seemed to be getting better and the inflammation seemed to be getting better, but on Sunday he grew rapidly worse and although both Dr. HORNER and SMITH did everything possible, they could not stem death. Interment was in Whittington cemetery. Chauncey Herbert McCLURE was born in Galva, Ill., April 19, 1862, and was married at Jefferson, Iowa, Jan. 23 to Ruby UNDERHILL. For five years they lived in Jefferson when they moved to Nebraska where they lived six years. In 1892 they came to Tampico since which time this community has been their home. The deceased was one of a family of seven children, two of whom died in childhood. The surviving are: E.D., of Tampico; William, of Nebraska; James, of Utah; Mrs. Bessie SEAVER of Utah; and Joseph of Nebraska. A wife and four children survive: Eunice, Maud, Lillian, Chauncey and Alice. Here's some LANCASTER stuff: March 14, 1896 Mrs. A. GOODELL [GOODALE?] who has been visiting at Henry LANCASTER's this winter returned to her home Sunday.
