Surnames: Warner, Conner, Bryant, Dodge, Sears, Fuller, Bacon, Shaw, Thomas, Loomis Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Zh.2ADE/1331 Message Board Post: From the Biographical Record of Whiteside Co., Illinois 1990, page 228. JOHN H. WARNER. Sound judgment, combined with fine ability in mechanical lines, has enabled the subject of this biography, a well-known resident of Prophetstown, Illinois, to attain a substantial success in life, and his history is of especial interest. Mr. Warner was born in Jefferson county, Missouri, November I I, 1812, and is a son of jabez Warner, a native of New England, who, when fifteen years of age, went to Missouri with a brother and located in St. Louis. With his brother he learned the cooper's trade, and later he carried on quite an extensive cooperage business in St. Louis. though he made his home in Jefferson county. .There he married Miss Elizabeth Conner, who was reared in Missouri, and to them were born ten children, of whom our subject is the oldest, the others being as follows: Mary E. , who married Job Dodge, a merchant of Prophetstown, and both are now deceased; Elias B. and Andrew J. , deceased, both of whom married and reared families; Edward B. , who was county treasurer of this county for some years and is now deceased; Sarah C., widow of Silas Sears, a farmer of this county; Eliza, widow of Andrew Fuller and a resident of Sterling; Ellen M., who married Henry Bacon and died in southern California; ! M. P., a resident of Morrison; and Jabez F., a business man of Prophetstown, who died in 1899. In 1837 the father came to Whiteside county, Illinois, and bought a claim near Prophetstown, upon which he located the following year. He also opened up an adjoining farm, which is now within the corporate limits of Prophetstown. Here he spent his last days, dying in 1847. His wife long survived him and passed away when nearly ninety-nine .years of age. The subject of this review was reared in St. Louis and obtained a good education in the city schools. He learned.the cooper's trade with his father and remained under the parental roof until twenty-one years of age. In Jefferson county, Missouri, he was married, March 12, 1835. to Miss Clarissa E. Bryant, who was born in that county May 28, 1818, a daughter of Colonel David Bryant, a distinguished officer of the war of 1812. He was born in Canada and was reared by French people, as his mother died when he was a child. Later he moved to Jefferson county, Missouri, where he owned and operated a large farm, also a tanyard and gristmill, being one ot the most active and prominerit business men of that locality. After his marriage, Mr. Warner resided in St. Louis for a few years and then purchased a farm in Jefferson county and turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. In 1840 he came to Whiteside county, Illinois, where he spent one year at this time. He took up goverment land, erected thereon a claim shanty, and while here he cut and made hoop poles and worked at the cooper's trade in Prophetstown, manufactuting barrels. In 184I he returned to his farm in Jefferson country, Missouri, and operated the same until 1850, when he sold the place and moved to Peru, Illinois, where he built a house and cooper shop and carried on busness for two years. Disposing of his property there, he again came to Prophetstown in 1852, and purchased a residence which has now been his home for forty-seven years. In partnership he engaged in the cooperage business and in pork packing on quite an extensive scale for several years, and their efforts were crowned with success. Our subject bought two hu! ndred acres of raw land three miles from Prophetstown, which he has improved and cultivated until it is now one of the most desirable farms of its size in the locality. Of the eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. Warner, four are still living, namely: James, a civil engineer of Oregon; Orpha, wife of George Shaw , of Prophetstown; William, who is married, has two children and resides in Prophetstown; and Frank, who is also married and living in that place. Those deceased are Mary Josephine, who died at the age of one year; Thomas Edward, who died in childhood; Adaline, deceased wife of N. J. Thomas, of Aurora; and Emma, deceased wife of Edward Loomis. In his political affiliations Mr. Warner was originally an old line Whig, but since supporting Abraham Lincoln for the presidency in 1560{sic}, he has been a stanch Republican. Although he has never sought political preferment, he was elected to the first city council of Prophetstown, and most capably filled that position lor several years. He has been prominently identified with the growth and upbuilding of the place, and is one of most honored and highly respected citizens,

All, A few concepts on mailing lists for you to consider! Remember, the list is public, EVERYONE sees the messages posted, because of this, it is a good idea to do the following: 1. Sign your messages with your name, nickname, something somewhat unique so that we can identify you! 2. When responding, USE the person's name, nickname, etc. so they KNOW that your reply is addressed to them. If you are getting into a back and forth conversation, it is best to move it from the list to private email! Thanks, Bob Mosher, List Manager
Sounds like arthritis.......and although it is genetic, it is not restricted to one lineage..... Stormy

In 1870 in Fulton, the family was: Dorsey, Patrick 28 M Ir x x x Sawmill Ann 27 F Ir Frank 5 M IL Hellena 4 F IL Elizabeth 4 F IL (twins) Mary 2 F IL Cate 18 F MA Cate would appear to be a sister to Patrick. This could mean that she came over with Patrick, or perhaps that his parents emigrated also. There is another Dorsey family in Fulton where the records are a little confusing...may be worth keeping in mind! In 1860 this family appears Dorcy, John 40 M Ir Laborer Bridget 32 F Ir In 1870 in addition to Patrick above this family is in Fulton Dorsey, Martin 40 M Ir Daylaborer Bridget 40 F Ir Bridget 10 F Ir The possibilities are 1, these are two Different families or 2, they are the same and Martin and John are one person, or 3, Bridget is the same but she married a different Dorsey. I suspect the first, mainly because of the younger Bridget's birthplace. I have seen a lot of age variation in Irish families that are obviously the same family but people age 16 years in 10, or only a couple, or None! I suspect an Irish brogue and perhaps sense of humor are to blame! Bob
I posted the query about Joseph Solomon Lechner, because a friend and I were trying to determine if there was a connection between her Lechner family and mine. We could not find one. Old George Lechner came over a hundred years earlier than her family. She did send me a picture of her father and her aunt's fingures and they were quite bent. I did not think any more about it until this morning. I looked at my own hands and these fingers are starting to bow towards my thumbs. I am 61. Does this mean we are cousins? If so how do you fit on the Lechner family tree? The thing that I noticed when researching the line of old George Lechner in the few generation I was able to track before they left the York/Adams Co. area, was the amount of early male deaths. At the time of his death all of George's sons were dead. Of his grandsons, that I have tracked, only one grandson lived past 50, dying about age 54 and one great grandson who lived into his 70's and at least one of that man's sons had died in early manhood. I have always wondered if there was some genetic factor or if they were the victims of the hard life and poor medicine of the late 1700 and early 1800's. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] for any additional information.
This may sound wierd, however, I am trying to track the Lechner family through an inherited trait involving the middle finger of each hand. We have determined through the research that we have done regarding our family that it is a Lechner trait. The middle finger at the top joint by the nail, during the aging process begins to either turn outward or inward, sometimes to an almost 90 degree angle. It becomes evident during ones forties (or earlier) and REALLY does the turn in late 50s plus. Has anyone else seen this?
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Russell died Sept 14, 1932, in Elgin, NE. You might be able to check with the Elgin Library and get a copy of her obituary. This might be a clue to her parents names, also. By the way in the articles that I've read about Orange Brittell, his father, Isaac Henry Brittell, is always stated to have been born in France. This is not true. He was born in Weybridge, Addison Co., Vermont. He was the son of John and Elizabeth (Hobbs) Brittell, and had 11 siblings. Isaac's great, great grandfather, John, fled Havre d'Grace, France, and went to Bristol, England. There he worked for a man named Ray. He married the man's daughter, Jennie Jane Ray, and they came to America, settling in Milford, CT. Their son, Claudius Ray Brittell, was born here in 1733. Claudius' son, John, was Isaac's father and Orange's grandfather.
Since we are seeing several Brittell queries, let me throw mine into the mix!! I have an Lorena A. Brittell born abt. 1847 in Vermont, who married Cyrus H. Mosher in Whiteside County 3 Nov 1869. In an announcement in the Whiteside Sentinel, she was from Maquoketa, IA...does she fit in with the Brittel's that have been discussed, etc. She did not stay long with Cyrus Mosher who was my great-grandfather, they may have had a child. I have an early school attendance register that shows an Ida Mosher, born around 1874 attending school in 1885 with a note that she dropped out of school in Jan 1886. By that time, Cyrus was remarried to Sybil Marcellus. I have no idea if they divorced, if Lorena died, etc. The census record in 1870 appears to have mixed up Cyrus family with his brother John who was living in the same household as John is shown was a Lorena and Cyrus with John's wife, Emma (Foster).
