    3. Does Ancestry own total rights to the census? Everything I touch you have to subscribe to. What about Probate records? I found a probate record for someone I'm looking for in the White Co. Probate Journal and wondering how I can get a copy of it. Janean

    3. No, they do NOT own the federal census! They own their service of providing it online. Some counties have posted some of their own censuses (for free) at their rootsweb sites. Heritage Quest provides online censuses through public libraries that subscribe to their service. (The libraries then provide the service free to their patrons.) And many libraries have copies of the federal census microfilms of their county or area (I recently researched some folks on the 1930 census at a St. Louis County, MO library.) These films are also available at the National Archives and its branches around the country - for free. (They also have published indexes of many of the censuses, at least at the Washington DC site.) I believe you can order copies of specific microfilms from them, too, but of course those are not free. See their site for details http://archives.gov Probate records usually belong to the county. --- Janean Ray <JRay38@neo.rr.com> wrote: > Does Ancestry own total rights to the census? > > Everything I touch you have to subscribe to. > > What about Probate records? > > I found a probate record for someone I'm > looking for in the White Co.
