Greetings, Some time back i sent a sketch of the experiences of Elder Lewis Hon (a Regular or Primitive Baptist minister) to a few of the White county forum members who were interested. It was written in about 1891, I believe. Today I came across his obituary, published in 1908. It has more about his family and thus I thought I would offer it also, to anyone who would like to have it. I can xerox it and send it to you, if just a few want it. Otherwise I could scan it and send to however many want it. Sincerely, Robert Webb Carthage, Illinois ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Hi White County Fans - A new White County book will be available on or before December 15: "That Which Was and Those Who Were: Columns from 'The Carmi Times', White County, Illinois", by Charlene Cleveland Shields; size 7 x 10, softcover, 328 pages (20 pages of index alone!). This is a collection of the columns Charlene wrote in her genealogy column from 1989--2002, and is chock-full of names, places, tips for researching, humor, and history. For example: Among the earliest White County landowners recorded at the Shawneetown Land Office were the following purchasers of land in 1814: Nathaniel Blackford, Joseph Boone, John Bradbury, William T. Codd, Samuel Dagley, James Gray, Regin Hall, David Haney, James Hannah, Jonah Hannah, James Hobbs, Henry Jones, William Jones, Jesse Kuykendall, Noah Kuykendall, Peter Kuykendall, Robert Land, Francis Leech, George R. Logan, John Lucas, Balam May, Susannah McClury, Daniel McHenry, James McWilliams, John Mobley, William Nash, ... or A 1905 Murder: "In a little ravine running across the corner of a meadow within 20 yards of the highway, Mr. Phipps came upon the dead body of a man." The details were so gory, probably a present-day newspaper wouldn't publish such. At any rate, there was a leather hitch rein around the neck of the decomposed body, and the rein was tied to a thorn bush. The murdered man was identified by a letter on his person as being William Jones of School (Centerville). ... or in a list of 1907 businesses for the entire county: Norris City, Pop. 868-A. M. Allen, Restaurant; Charles E. Barnes, Hardware & Furniture; T. S. Barnes, General Store & Lumber; W. J. Burnett, Drugs; H. M. Catlin, Blacksmith; A. C. Clippinger & Sons, Publishers; Cobbel & Boster, Poultry, Hardware, etc.; J. A. Cook, Harness; Frank DeBoard & Son, General Store; William Fulford, Butcher; Gowdy & Witters, Flour Mill; J. L. Harrell, Drugs; C. C. Haskins, Saw Mill; Hendrix & Barnum, Hardware, Furniture, etc.; N. E. Johnson, Harness; Tony Johnson, Harness; Fred Jones, Restaurant; W. B. Jones, Flour; Jordan & Hill, Grocery; ... Those of you who have read Charlene's Columns know what fascinating information she imparted; those who haven't will be amazed. The book is priced at $23, including postage, but if we receive your order by December 5, WE will pay the postage, so your price is only $20. (What a great Christmas present for yourself or a genealogist friend.) We also have copies of "I Never Learned To March," the Memoirs of White Countian Charles O. "Bill" Williams, which is priced at $17 postpaid, but if you order both books by December 5, your total price will be only $35 -- we pay postage for both. Order from: Genealogy Society of White County IL, P.O. Box 142, Carmi, IL 62821. What a bargain! Happy reading. Pat Davis genealogy_society@midwest.net
