He was scheduled to rejoin his unit the next day, but he got up during the night to get a drink of water for another ill soldier, collapsed and died. In 1856, William and his brother ALLAN RICE had built the Saline Salt Works in Equality, IL. They ran the salt works for 2 or 3 years and then sold it. On 5 Mar 1847, in White Co., IL, WILLIAM EMMERSON RICE married MARTHA ANN GOSSETT, born 17 Mar 1826, Sumner Co., TN. she died 26 Aug 1901, White Co., IL; Martha did not remarry. Woodford Co., KY; died 1 July 1850 White Co., IL. dau of FRANCIS GHOLSON and MARY ("Polly") CRAIG.
