I do not research ALL of these names (wouldn't that be something!), as many are tangential to my main Rice line. He had been stationed in Memphis, TN, with WILLIAM EMMERSON RICE (see below) during a measles outbreak. Son of JOHN PATTERSON STERLING, SR., and SARAH ("Sallie") ANDERSON; THOMAS STERLING married 11 Dec 1845 in Blount Co., TN, to REBECCA J. ENDSLEY, born 29 June 1825 in NC died 4 July 1901, Sacramento, White Co., IL. dau of JAMES ENDSLEY and SARAH McGILLIARD She married 2nd to JOHN SIGLER on 6 Oct 1864 in White Co., IL. he was born 2 Nov 1809 in KY, and died 28 Dec 1902 He had been married to ISABELLA W. BLACK who died in Hamilton Co., IL, after the 1860 census. Children of John and Rebecca were 1. MARGARET ("Maggie") SIGLER who married JOHN GROVES and moved to Cottage Grove, OR; 2. FRANCES ("Frank") SIGLER who married WILBUR NELSON Their son, CLYDE NELSON married NELLIE MAE WALLACE Their son, DOYLE FRANCIS NELSON married LOUELLA NORRINE BEATTY Their children are DAVID FRANCIS NELSON AND LESLIE DIANE NELSON WILLIAM EMMERSON RICE, father of WILLIAM HENRY RICE (above), was born 26 May 1826, Stokes Station (no longer exists, but was located between Carmi and Norris City), White Co., IL; he died of measles during the Civil War, 7 Mar 1863 at Baptist Church Hospital (a church taken over by the Union Army to serve as a hospital) in Memphis, TN. He was scheduled to rejoin his unit the next day, but he got up during the night to get a drink of water for another ill soldier, collapsed and died. In 1856, William and his brother ALLAN RICE had built the Saline Salt Works in Equality, IL. They ran the salt works for 2 or 3 years and then sold it. On 5 Mar 1847, in White Co., IL, WILLIAM EMMERSON RICE married MARTHA ANN GOSSETT, born 17 Mar 1826, Sumner Co., TN. she died 26 Aug 1901, White Co., IL; Martha did not remarry. Her eleven year-old son, WILLIAM HENRY RICE, did the farm work and MARTHA ANN did very fine needlework (which ruined her vision) to support her five surviving children. dau of ABRAM GOSSETT and REBECCA BATZ ABRAM GOSSETT, born 1791 Montgomery Co., TN, and REBECCA BATZ. Rebecca died while Martha Ann was young, and Abram married 2nd, MARTHA WALTERS. WILLIAM EMMERSON RICE'S father was ABEL RICE, born 5 Sep 1792 in Tinmouth, VT; died 18 Feb 1846, White Co., IL (gravestone was transcribed in a White Co. cemetery book as "March" for the month of death) he was married 11 Oct 1815/16, in Maury Co., TN to LYDIA GHOLSON, born 15 Jun 1792, prob. Woodford Co., KY; died 1 July 1850 White Co., IL. dau of FRANCIS GHOLSON and MARY ("Polly") CRAIG. MARY, her mother, was the dau of TOLIVER CRAIG, JR. and ELIZABETH JOHNSTON, and her grandparents were TALIAFERRO ("TOLIVER") CRAIG, SR.(son of JOHN CRAIG and JANE TALIAFERRO) and MARY ("Polly") HAWKINS, the heroine of Bryan's Station, KY..
