After I posted the last message, I found some other information on Ancestry.com and elsewhere that I used to piece together a tentative tree. Apparently, the Aud family can be traced backed to the mid-1600s when they immigrated from France to Saint Mary's, MD (the first settlement in Maryland and pretty much the first group of Catholics to come to America). This is of particular interest to me because I grew up in Maryland but always assumed that my wife's family was only centered in White Co., Illinois and before that directly from Europe. One note of historical interest about Martha Ellen: she was one of twins (Rachel being the other; not sure how long she lived) and their mother died when they were about two years old. Their father (Francis Riley Aud, who didn't die until 1951) remarried, but for some reason he put Martha in the care of a relative of his second wife (Sarah Hathaway). The 1900 census has her as a ward of Alexander and Emily Hathaway in Pope Co., IL. By the 1910 census she was working as a servant for Robert Stewart Taylor and his young son (his wife had died recently) and they were married shortly after that.
