— Theron Flota, Jr., 87, of Mt. Vernon, died 10:25 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2012, at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon. He was born Tuesday, June 16, 1925, in White County, son of Theron and Ethel (McCarthy) Flota. He married Sharon Lomax on Dec. 20, 1975, in Mt. Vernon. Junior was a member of Mt. Vernon Church of Christ and he served in the U.S. Army with the 1st Platoon, Battery C, 26th Battalion at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He worked for General Foods in Kankakee for 23 years until retiring in 1985, where he served as Union Steward. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He is survived by wife, Sharon Flota of Mt. Vernon; sons, Stan Flota and wife Brenda of Florence, Miss., Terry Gateley of Houston, Texas and Tim Gateley and wife Sue of Tolono; daughters, Danna Fischer and husband Darrel of Watseka, Angie Brandt of Homewood and Tammy Walker and husband Will of Crystal Lake; sister, Jerry Sechrest of Mt. Vernon; brother, Howard Flota and wife Bea of Jacksonville, Fla.; twenty-one grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild expected soon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Dwight, Coy, Gale, Ed and Denzel Flota; sister, Opal Justice; and one great-grandson. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home with Mr. Joshua Hartwigsen and Mr. Bob Karnoski officiating. Interment will be at South Hickory Hill Cemetery in Jefferson County. The chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct a flag presentation service at the cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
