The history pulls the regiment out of historical oblivion elucidating the highs and lows of the soldiers' service along the Mississippi River, and examines how social and economic heritage shaped wartime experience. Kohl is also seeking information about any of the soldiers' families during the war or postwar period, for entry into her next two books about the Fifth Illinois.
