    3. Carmi Times Wed Oct 21, 2009 Carmi, Ill. - Robert G. Phipps, 83, Evansville, Ind., formerly of Carmi, passed away at 9:12 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 at the Heritage Center in Evansville, Ind. He was born Sept. 11, 1926 in Brownsville, the son of Roscoe Chase and Velma Eileen (Harrawood) Phipps. He married Garnet Christine Dick June 18, 1949. Mr. Phipps was a World War II Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Evansville and was a retired high school physics teacher. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Garnet Phipps of Evansville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda K. and Jerry Settle of Boise, Idaho, Laura J. and William Fisher, and Beth Anne Phipps, all of Evansville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth B. and Vicki Phipps of Waukesha, Wis. and Lee D. and Laura Sue Phipps of Bellingham, Wash.; four grandchildren, Matthew Phipps, Evan Phipps, Emily Fisher and Rachel Phipps; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by one son, Scott Phipps, and a sister, Mary Faye Phipps. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009 at Campbell Funeral Home Chapel in Carmi, Chaplain Jeff Palmer officiating. Burial will be in West Union Cemetery near Carmi. Friends and family may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mr. Phipps' memory to Heritage Center, Evansville, Ind., or the American Cancer Society. Contributions will be accepted at the funeral home.
