Carmi Times Tue Sep 08, 2009 Laura Alveda Baxley, 87, Carmi, passed away at 8:07 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7, 2009 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. She was born Aug. 16, 1922 in Mill Shoals Township, the daughter of Eugene Sylvester and Madge Bernadine (Smith) Upton. She married G.L. "Larry" Baxley Dec. 19, 1941, and he preceded her in death Jan. 14, 1989. She was a member and organist at Ashland Christian Church, and attended and played the organ at McHenry United Methodist church, and leaves many friends at both churches. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Baxley was a homemaker and worked at the Ainsbrooke garment factory for 20 years, and she was also a volunteer at the White County Senior Citizens Center. Surviving are five sons and four daughters-in-law, Lawrence Edward "Ed" and Pam Baxley, and Gary and Janet Baxley, all of Carmi, Ray and Marcia Baxley of Mt. Vernon, Ind., Larry Baxley of Franklin, N.C., and Robert and Lisa Baxley of Carmi; a sister, Imogene Fields of Carmi; a brother-in-law, Joe Paschall of Las Vegas, Nev.; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Paschall. Memorial gifts may be given in Laura Baxley's memory to the White County Senior Citizens Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, the Rev. Jon Westfall and Charles Mossberger officiating, with burial following in North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
