Carmi Times Mon Sep 14, 2009 Harrisburg - Fred C. Gunzel Jr., 78, Harrisburg, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. He was born on Jan. 19, 1931, in Shawneetown to Fred and Catherine Gunzel. Fred owned and operated Gunzel's Family Restaurant in Harrisburg for many years. Before going into business for himself, he worked at The Carmi Times and The Daily Register. He was an Army veteran; he served his country and was honorably discharged. Fred was of the Methodist faith and was a devoted Christian who deeply believed in God. Fred had several hobbies. He raised show pigeons and was also a judge at pigeon shows all around the country. He loved horse racing; anytime he could get away, he would go and watch the horses run at Ellis Park. He collected antiques, baseball cards, knives and old pocket watches. What Fred really enjoyed most was talking to and trading with his many friends who came into his restaurant. Fred is survived by special friends Steve, Susie and Amin Miller, who loved and cared for him through his final days. He is also survived by a host of brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. At Fred's wishes, he will be cremated and his remains will buried in Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Harrisburg. Loading commenting interface...
