Carmi Times Mon Jun 01, 2009 Tennessee - Floyd D. Gates, 77, of the Anderson community near Monterey, Tenn., and formerly of Carmi, died Sunday, May 31, 2009 at the Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville, Tenn. He was born June 18, 1931 in Carmi, the son of the late Henry and Josephine (Rhein) Gates. Mr. Gates enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and retired in 1975 with the rank of lieutenant commander. He served on the USS Hornet and USS Orinsky, along with many other aircraft carriers. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steven and Marilyn Gates of North Carolina, and Dale Gates of Monterey, Tenn.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a special nephew and wife, Richard and Janice Gates of Carmi. He was preceded in death on April 28, 2008 by his wife, Betty Gates, and by three brothers and two sisters. The family chose cremation, and no services are planned at the time. Arrangements were made by Goff Funeral Home of Monterey, Tenn.
