Carmi Times Mon Jun 08, 2009 Carmi, Ill. - Donald E. Hughes, 81, Carmi, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. He was born in Phillips Township, White County, on Aug. 6, 1927, the son of Fred Eugene and Bonnie Irene (Brewer) Hughes. On Aug. 30, 1947, he married Verna L. Cleveland, and she preceded him in death on January 8, 2005. Don was a retired air shaft driller for Peabody Coal Co. He was a World War II Army veteran and lifetime member of both the V.F.W. and American Legion. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Janice Hughes of Spokane, Wash.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Lesa and Ed Morlan, and Jeana Hughes, all of Mt. Vernon, Ill.; a brother, Bob Hughes of Carmi; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Bonnie Hughes; wife, Verna L. Hughes; and three brothers, Raymond, Ronald and Bill Hughes. Visitation and funeral service were Monday, June 8, 2009, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Visitation was at noon and continued until funeral time at 2 p.m. Burial with military rites was in Stokes Chapel Cemetery near Crossville. Memorials may be made to the House of New Beginnings and will be accepted at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi.
