Carmi Times Sun Mar 07, 2010 Crossville, Ill. - Velma M. Shoup, 97, Crossville, died Friday, March 5, 2010, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. She was born Sept. 2, 1912, in Edwards County, the daughter of Samuel J. and Ida (Frankland) Kershaw. She married Harlan C. Shoup Nov. 14, 1945, and he preceded her in death on March 30, 2002. Velma was a very active member of Crossville United Methodist Church until her health failed her. She taught school for over 44 years, beginning in Edwards County and later teaching in White County until her retirement in 1974. Survivors include nephews, John Endicott of Carmi, Thomas Endicott of Chandler, Ariz., and Samuel L. Kershaw of Decatur; nieces, Marjorie Baker of Shawneetown and Virginia Singleton of Evansville, Ind.; a brother-in-law, Richard Endicott of Carmi; and several great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Ida Kershaw; stepmother, Jennie Kershaw; husband, Harlan Shoup; two brothers, William R. Kershaw and Meredith R. Kershaw; a sister, Ruth Endicott; and nieces, Jean Wall and Anita Harris. Visitation and funeral service will be Tuesday, March 9, at Crossville United Methodist Church. Visitation is at 10 a.m. and continues until funeral time at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Stokes Chapel Cemetery near Crossville. Arrangements are by Cook Funeral Chapel in Crossville. Memorials may be made to Crossville United Methodist Church and will be accepted at Cook Funeral Chapel in Crossville.
