Carmi Times Fri Feb 19, 2010 _____ Carmi, Ill. - Carl Edward Sturgal, 74, Carmi, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family after an extended illness. Carl was born on Oct. 18, 1935 in Mt. Vernon, Ind. to the late Earl F. Sturgal and Vivian (Carr) Sturgal. He was a Korean War veteran of the Navy. Carl married Judy Ledbetter on June 15, 1982, and she survives. Carl ran the Lantern Tavern in Carmi for years, and later was a self-employed plumber until he retired. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion in Carmi. He had also been a member of the VFW and Elks. Carl was a good husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be greatly missed by the community. Carl is survived by his wife Judy (Ledbetter) Sturgal of Carmi; four sons, Eddie Sturgal of Texas and Jeff (Jane) Sturgal, Carl Ray (Renea) Sturgal and Gregory (Sherry) Sturgal, all of Carmi; two daughters, Vonda Fern (Mike) Champion and Carla (Terry) Rush, both of Springerton; three brothers, Raymond (Ann) Sturgal and Bill (Darlene) Sturgal, both of Arizona, and Don (Sharon) Sturgal of Carmi; one sister, Marilyn (Kenny) Staley of Mascoutah; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a great grandson. Per Carl's request, his body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at later date.
