Revolutionary War veteran who served in the Third Battalion of Gloucester County Militia under Col. Richard Somers. --George Maricle Sr. of Gloucester Co., NJ (b. ca. 1735- d. ca. 1829 in Gloucester Co., NJ) I located George Maricle Sr., (father of George Jr. listed above) in the following record (available in book and on microfilm from the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah): My source: "Index to New Jersey Wills 1688-1890: The Testators, Vol. II, K-Z" The index to this volume contains a "George Merriele from Gloucester Co., Inventory #03902H." An inventory is a simple legal listing of George's few personal items he had at the time he died in 1829 (he did not leave a will, just an inventory). The record of George Maricle Sr. is as follows: Inventory of George Maricle Sr. (ca. 1735-ca. 1829) [Front page; my comments in brackets] "3902H, Inventory of George Mericle dec. [deceased]. Proven Mar 17, 1829 and recorded in the Surrogates Office at Woodbury [Capital of Gloucester Co.] in Lib. [libris] No 5 folio 329 of Inventories." [Clerk's signature follows.] [The inventory] "The amount of the Property of George Merricle now deceased, as Appraised by the Subscribers freeholders in the county of Gloucester...." [Signed] Thomas North and Michael Owen [appraiser and county clerk] [There is another paragraph of legal boilerplate copy signed and dated March 17, 1829 by Thomas North] [Last paragraph of the inventory, which is the key paragraph] "George Mericale, adm. [administrator] of George Mericle, late of the County of Gloucester deceased being duly affirmed swearing to serve saith that the within writing contains a true and perfect Inventory of the supplies, the goods, chattels herewith of said deceased insofar as [illegible] to his knowledge appropriate in to the [illegible]." This legal boilerplate copy is then signed with the mark of "George Mericle." I believe that this signed "mark" confirms that the George Mericle listed above who signed his mark is one and the same person as George Maricle (Mericle, Markle,) b. 1755 in Gloucester Co and that he is the son of the deceased referred to in this document. He was living and came back to Gloucester Co. from W. Virginia to take care of his father's personal property at death and signed the necessary legal document, this inventory. His father, George Maricle Sr., was born ca. 1735 and he lived in Gloucester Co., N.J. when he d. ca. 1829. From the inventory items! , I think it's fair to say that George Sr. was a farmer. Both Georges lived to very old ages. My next research step will be to examine records from Philadelphia in an effort to locate the immigrant ancestor. (I have already thoroughly examined all existing church/bible records on microfilm from Gloucester Co. NJ and several books looking for Maricle info with no luck). Questions and comments are welcome. I'd like to hear from other family members about the following: --Can anyone tell me if George Sr. is the immigrant ancestor? Surely, this narrows down the field. Please let me know!!!!! --Does anyone have a tie-in on George Sr. to the Markels/Merkels, etc. from Berks County, PA? --Does anyone know the wife of George Sr.? Her name, where she was from, etc. --I think George Maricle Jr. had two brothers living in Warren County, NJ. A Nathan and a Christopher. Am in the process of researching these individuals.
