    1. Re: [ILWHITE] Roland
    2. Roberta, Per Glenn Sneed's "Ghost Towns of Southern Illinois" Roland Post Office was established in Gallatin Co. in 1849 and moved to White Co. 30 June 1851. Captain D. W. Porter opened a store near the Roland Post Office in 1857. The Porter Store was located in Section 12 of Indian Creek Twp. near the Harold Township line (I think he meant Heralds Prairie). John Porter had a village of 67 lots plotted around his store. It was in the southwest corner of the northeast quarter of the northeast quarter (I'm quoting) of section 12, township 7, range 8 east of the 3rd P. M. In 1977, one house remained standing. It was the old Porter house thought to have been the tavern. It was a log two story structure that had been remodeled several times. I don't know whether or not it has survived until today. Several Pearces were buried in the Old Village Cemetery (founded 1819) in Indian Creek Twp. However, Harriet Vaught listed it in Sec. 2 with Sec. 11 in parentheses with a question mark. Strangely enough it is located at T 7S, R.8E. I hope this answers your question. Shirley

    3. Thank you to all the folks that responded to my Roland query. Cannot tell you how much it is appreciated. All we knew was that our Jewell Pearce was raised in and lived all of his life in Herald's Prairie Township. Now we know exactly the town/village he was in and where it is. We now have a better picture where to look for where he is buried. We're going to start with Old Village Cemetery and hope that is where he is. Again, thank you.
