Note that most of the names also have a number written by them..that made me think it might possibly be members of a ladies sports team or something to that effect. The date written on one end of the photo appears to be February 28, 1898. It also states that all people are now deceased(at the time it was written..whenever that was). If you know more about any of the young ladies I would love to know. It is a grand old photo...found in an antique shop in Dexter, MO. Their parents were Robert Barnett Spence (1824-1878) and Adaline Calvert. (1828-1906) Robert Barnett Spence was the son of Robert Spence(1795-1869) and Jane Wilson (1807-1882). Robert Spence immigrated from Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland in 1826. He was an accomplished carpenter and furniture maker and I have inherited a huge chest was multiple drawers 9 ft X 12 ft which they brought over from Scotland with them to New York, It has passed to the oldest daughter in the decedents family since 1824 when it was made. It is pegged with wood rather than nails. I sincerely hope this info has been useful to you.     3. * OBITUARY: Jesse (Bud) Sauls * Oct. 18, 2012 8 a.m. * Calimesa, Calif. -- Jesse (Bud) Sauls, 80, of Calimesa, Calif. and formerly of Carmi, passed away Oct. 10, 2012 at Redlands Community Hospital. He was born Aug. 18, 1932 in Ridgway, the son of Jesse Sauls and Aretta (Peas) Sauls. He married Norma Thomas Sauls, who passed away. Bud then married Sue Ellen Renner Sauls and she survives. Bud was a medic in the Korean War. He also held an auctioneer's license and was a steel worker during his career. Bud was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Norris City. He is survived by his wife, Sue Ellen Sauls; four daughters, Vivian and Jerry Aud of Carmi, Ellen and Charlie South of Lancaster, Ohio, Bonnie Thompson of Susanville, Calif. and Ginger and Brandon Mulder of Beaumont, Calif.; two sons, Keith and Susan Sauls of Norris City and Matt and Krista Sauls of Redlands, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Aileen and Carl Crayne of Norris City, Gail and Clyde Henderson of Omaha, Jenny York of Omaha; five brothers, Rick Sauls of Norris City, Bob Sauls of Norris City, Dean and Peggy Sauls of Eldorado, Truman and Sue Sauls of Eldorado and Mike and Kathy Sauls of Fairfield; and several nieces and nephews.     3. * OBITUARY: Floella Seitz * Oct. 17, 2012 3 p.m. * Carmi -- Floella Seitz, 81, of rural Carmi died Wednesday, October 17, 2012 in Carmi from the results of a traffic accident. She was born May 3, 1931 in Carmi, the daughter of Fred and Lena (Pfister) Sailer. She married Kenneth E. Seitz on June 4, 1949, and he preceded her in death earlier this year on January 28. Floella was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Carmi. She was a farm wife and helped on the farm driving tractors and grain trucks. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed making costumes, doing alterations, piecing together quilt tops and then quilting them, and making loom-woven rugs. Gardening and cooking were among her favorite pastimes. Survivors include a son, John R. (Susan) Seitz of South Haven, Mich.; daughters Sandra K. (Charles) Williams of Carrier Mills and Jeanie (Terry) Spielman of Pecatonica; son-in-law Jerry (Carolyn) Crockett; grandchildren John David (Courtney) Crockett, Nicholas (Richelle) Williams, Erin Williams, Johnna (Nick) Bither; great grandchildren, Lucas Connelly Crockett, Sophia Laren Crockett and Brodie Crockett. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Emma Duvall, Florence May, Margaret Sailer, Ruby Daniel, Helen Simmons; and a brother, John Sailer. Visitation is 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, October 19 at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. The funeral is at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 20, with burial in White County Memorial Garden near Carmi. Hucker, 87, of Burnt Prairie passed away at 4:54 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born December 6, 1924 in Mill Shoals, the son of Levi Harrison and Silva Ann (Nelson) Hucker. Ralph was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II, was a retired Mail Carrier from the U.S.P.S and a member of Ashland Christian Church. Ralph is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Barbara Hucker of Carmi; a sister-in-law, Faye Hucker of Carmi and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Ralph E. Hucker of Burnt Prairie will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 11, 2012 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Private burial will be in Melrose Cemetery in Carmi.     3. * OBITUARY: O. LaRue Cleveland * Oct. 9, 2012 2 p.m. * Greenwood, Ind. -- O. LaRue Cleveland, 96, of Greenwood, Ind. passed away Tuesday morning, October 9, 2012. He was born July 31, 1916 in White County to Marvin C. and Esther (Staley) Cleveland. He married Marguerite B. Overfield on October 10, 1940 in Henderson, Ky. She preceded him in death on February 21, 2012. LaRue was a production superintendent for Ashland, Inc. for 38 years. Survivors include his son, Gary (Terry) Cleveland of Greenwood, Ind.; two grandchildren, Derek (Vicki) Cleveland and Daron Cleveland; and two great grandchildren, Amelia and Chase Cleveland. Visitation for O. LaRue Cleveland will take place from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 at Cook Funeral Home, located at 108 W. Main Street in Crossville. The funeral will take place at 1 p.m. at Cook Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at the Stokes Chapel Cemetery in Crossville. She was born February 27, 1931 in Colorado, the daughter of Ralph Cecil and Marguerite Lola "Peg" (Jackson) Wilson. Phyllis married Charles Robert Taylor on August 26, 1950 and he preceded her in death on May 21, 1999. Phyllis was a homemaker and a member of Strayhorn Baptist Church in Strayhorn, Miss. Phyllis is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Robert Herrell of Strayhorn, Miss.; five grandchildren, Stacy Godinez, Tracy Matthews, Kacey Houston, Ashley Taylor and Joseph Taylor; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Judy Ashmore of Country Club Hills and Bonnie Carter of Bethalto. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Taylor, in 1981 and a sister, Carol Ryan. Funeral services for Phyllis Taylor, 80, of Strayhorn, Miss., will be at 12 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with Rev. Dennis Reed officiating.     3. Rev. Bert Kuykendall, 86, of Rising Sun, Md., and formerly of McLeansboro, went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 7, 2012. Born in Crossville Sept. 18, 1926, he was the son of the late Frank and Erma Kuykendall of Carmi. He married Phyllis Nelson on Nov. 24, 1945, three years after they graduated from the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville. Bert was a farmer, working with his father for many years before entering into the ministry to the deaf. He graduated from Central Bible College in Springfield, Mo. He loved serving the Lord, but, regretfully, he had to retire from active ministry due to failing eyesight. He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in McLeansboro. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; a daughter, Christine (Manuel) Cordero of Colora, Md.; two grandchildren, Nathan (Jaime) Cordero of Pennsburg, Penn., and Angela (Troy) Jordan of Colora, Md.; five great-grandchildren, Jessica and Jack Cordero and Gabriela, Curtis and Eden Jordan. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a deaf foster son, Patrick (Donna) Urban. Funeral services will be held at Gholson Funeral Home, 500 S. Washington, McLeansboro, on Wed. Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. with viewing at 10 a.m. The service will be officiated by his son-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Manuel A. Cordero. The burial will be at Kuykendall Cemetery in Carmi.     3. * OBITUARY: Max Edward McCandlish * Oct. 8, 2012 1 p.m. * Private arrangements have been made for Max Edward McCandlish, 71, of Thornville, Ohio. Max passed away on Saturday, October 6, 2012. He was born in Springfield, Ohio, on June 27, 1941 to the late Albanis and Helen Ann (Landrum) McCandlish, who preceded him in death. After Max graduated of Woodward HS in Cincinnati, he worked as a State Highway trooper before being called into the family business to become the vice president of Columbus Clay Manufacturing. Max continued in life following other business pursuits before becoming an insurance agent for Western & Southern Insurance Company. Max was well known in the community and belonged to several local organizations: the Free Masons, Order of the Eastern Star, Moose Lodge (#2434), and the AmVets Post 51. In addition to spending time with his loving wife, Miriam (Bach), Max enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, snow mobiling and car restoration work. Max is survived by his wife, Miriam; his son, Matt, of Carmi; his daughter, Mimi (John) Wyer of Zanesville, Ohio; his brother, Arthur (Sharon) of Thornville, Ohio; his sister-in-law, Vonna (Mowery) Everman; his grandchildren, Mindy, Cody and Shaye; and several nephews and nieces.
