* OBITUARY: Chelsea Glen Rudolph * Oct. 25, 2012 5 p.m. * Carmi -- Chelsea Glen Rudolph, 99, of Carmi, slipped into God's embrace on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was born December 19, 1912 in White County, the son of Chelsea Roland and Nola May (Kuykendall) Rudolph. He married Mary Olive Ridenour August 27, 1933 and she preceded him in death April 30, 2006. Glen had an early start in farming, as he and his mother put out their farm crop when he was only 11 years old. He was considered an excellent farmer, hunter, leader and carpenter. Glen was known throughout the state as one of the finest harness horse driver, trainer and breeder of that sport. He was road commissioner of Hawthorne Township for many years and a member and trustee of McHenry Methodist Church. Glen is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Mike Croghan of Carmi; two grandsons, Kelly Croghan and wife, Darcy, of Louisville, Ky. and Patrick and wife, Beckie, of St. Albans, W.V.; two great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Sean Croghan; three step great-grandchildren, Craig Sherman, Charlie and Leslie Sattes; and three step great-great-grandchildren, Corey, Clemente and Shelby. Graveside funeral services and burial for Chelsea Glen Rudolph, 99, of Carmi will be Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Kuykendall Cemetery in Carmi following a visitation from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Supportive Living of Wabash or TIP Hospice and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home.
* OBITUARY: Dorothy N. Johnson * Oct. 24, 2012 5 p.m. * Evansville, Ind. -- Dorothy N. Johnson, age 93 of Evansville, Ind. but formerly longtime resident of Norris City, died peacefully on October 22, 2012 in the Terrace of Solarbron. Dorothy was born in Iron on December 26, 1918 to the late Vay Buttry and Ola (Murphy) Buttry. She was married in 1940 to Vaughn Johnson who preceded her in death in 2006. Dorothy was a homemaker and helped her husband, Vaughn, throughout their marriage. She loved to cook, can and garden. She had worked at the Chicago Candy Factory and they farmed. Dorothy was a good woman, wonderful wife, sister, aunt and friend. Dorothy is survived by a brother, Starlus Buttry, nieces and nephews, Diane Burkhart, Raymond Buttry, Stella Valetta Knowles, Aubrey Catlin, Ralph Jordan, Dr. Charles Gilpin and several great and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Otel Buttry, two sisters, Euland Buttry and Ruth Buttry Catlin, and a niece Carmen Mattingly. The family would like to thank the Solarbron Staff for their wonderful care of Dorothy. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 26, 2012 at the Ebenezer Cemetery in Norris City. Those attending should go directly to the cemetery. * OBITUARY: Harold Leon Terry * Oct. 24, 2012 10 a.m. * Carmi -- Harold Leon Terry, 87, of Carmi, died Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. He was born February 10, 1925, in Carter Nine, Okla., the son of Bufford Clifford and Sarah Velma (Hill) Terry. On December 20, 1947, he married Helen Seitz and she survives. Leon enjoyed his family and was an active member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church where he served in several capacities. For 60 years, he was the owner and operator of Big Four Welding Company and was known as "the best backhoe operator in the area." He was a member of the Carmi Lions Club and a past president. Among his pastimes were bowling, boating, water sports, camping, reading (western novels), working with stained glass, jigsaw puzzles, computers and communicating with his friends on Facebook and e-mail. Anyone who ever met him would know that he was an amazing son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. No matter how you were involved in his life, he knew you loved him and he loved you. Survivors include his wife, Helen Terry of Carmi; son Bill (Linda) Terry of Winter Park, Fla.; daughter Susan (Michael) Cohen of Brewster, N.Y.; sister Peggy Whetstone of Carmi; sister-in-law Arline Terry of Alabama; grandchildren Travis David (Wendy) Terry, Jennifer Nicole Terry, Stephen Garrett Cohen, Brett David Cohen; great grandchildren, Mason Terry, August Terry and Allison Terry. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews, Lois (Steve) Hendrix, Joanne (Scott) Hart, Darin (Debbie) Whetstone, David (Karen) Whetstone, Sarah (Randy) Newlin, Gary (Teresa) Terry, Joe (Brook) Terry, Terry (Rogene) Toler, Loretta (Craig) Stalnaker, and Robin Terry. He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Vera Toler and infant Faye Terry; brothers Clifford Cleo Terry and Lawrence Terry; brother-in-law Forrest Toler; sister-in-law Sue Terry; and nephews Dennis Terry and Gene Toler. Visitation is 5 until 7 p.m. Friday, October 26, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cook Funeral Chapel with burial in White County Memorial Garden. * OBITUARY: Donald Ray Benjamin * Oct. 24, 2012 10 a.m. * Centralia -- Donald Ray Benjamin, formerly of Centralia, died Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at Veteran Administration Facility in Marion. He was born June 21, 1949, in Centralia, the son of Kenneth and Josephine (Hatfield) Benjamin. He was married to Brenda (Robertson) Benjamin and she survives. Don was a correction officer for the Illinois Department of Corrections, a lifetime member of the VFW, member of Vietnam Vets of America and the American Legion. He is survived by his wife Brenda; stepdaughters Lynn (Brian) Marks, Kathy (Josh) Sherwood; brothers Kenneth (Dixie) Benjamin, Gary Benjamin; half-brother Troy Lewis; half-sister Debbie Lewis; grandchildren Misty Lanier, Jeremiah Goddy, Thomas Josiah Goddy, Ashley Caravello; and great grandchildren Chloe and Avery. She was born April 18, 1938 in Grayville, the daughter of Ezra and Virginia (Hutchcraft) Simmons. She married William Pollard on January 27, 1953 in Shawneetown and he preceded her in death in 2008. Frances had worked for many years as an in home healthcare worker for Addus Healthcare in Mt. Carmel. She loved to learn and she took many interesting classes at the local junior college to further herself. She was a very active member of the Carmi New Beginnings Church of God. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Emma Pollard, Everett Pollard and Albert and Rachel Pollard, all of Carmi; two daughters, Peggy Browning and Jenny Midkiff both of Carmi; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Earl Ray Simmons of California and Tommy (Shirley) Simmons of Griffin, Ind.; two sisters, Barbara Allen and Irene Adams both of Indiana; two brothers-in-law, Robert (Loretta) Pollard of Carmi and Roy Pollard of Thailand; four sisters-in-law, Betty (Tom) Hosick and Mabel (Don) Todd all of Enfield, Maxine and Doyles Harvey of Tennessee and Helen Sexton and a very special friend, Maurice McCall, and a special niece Delores Gunter, all of Carmi. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband William; one son, William "Little Bill" Pollard; two sons-in-law, Larry Browning and Kirk Midkiff; granddaughter, Amy Lynn Pollard; brother, Jimmy Pollard and sister, Sereda Simmons Jones. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 26, 2012 at the Carmi New Beginnings Church of God with Rev. Keith Moore and Wade Carty officiating. On October 19, 2012 at 10:45am, Reverend Michael Allen Steed age 58, went to be with the Lord. Mike “O Glory†Steed was serving as pastor of New Hope Webb Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, IL. He will be best remembered as the man who loved to laugh. He was a voice on the local radio station the Vine and kept his audience laughing with countless stories and his constant humor. Mike had served in the ministry for 33 years in churches both in Illinois and Missouri, including Wayne City Baptist, Platte City Baptist, and Logan Street Baptist. Mike was a graduate of William Jewell College and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City. He also served as Director of Missions for the Salem South Baptist Association of Mt. Vernon, IL. Other ministries included serving the IBSA Music camps, directing youth camps, directing “Teen Talks†at Wayne City High School, singing at numerous weddings and revivals and sharing the Lord with everyone he could. Mike used his special talent of drawing characters on napkins in restaurants to share the Lord with others.
