Anna, I don't have any information at all on Samual except he probably lived in While Co. April 11, 1874 when his son Zach was born. That's not very much information. I keep seeing these references to Tabitha Stephens BRUCE marrying William GRAY. It is not that I don't believe you all that Tabitha married William GRAY. What disturbs me is that I have the evidence that she married Benjamin F. BRUCE Aug. 10, 1845 in White Co. So, either we are talking about apples and oranges here or have a nice little puzzle on our hands. Since the IL Statewide marriages show no evidence of a marriage of William GRAY to a Tabitha BRUCE, Tabitha STEPHENS,or, for that matter, anyone named Tabitha, we definitely need to sort this problem out. What happened to Benjamin F. BRUCE?? WHEN did he die? Where is the proof of Tabitha STEPHENS BRUCE marrying William GRAY, other than her turning up on the 1850 Census in White Co.? I would really like to get to the bottom of this and get my files straight, wouldn't you? Did William GRAY come to White Co from Sumner Co TN, by any chance? I do have several GRAYs in my files from there. If he were from this Tennessee bunch it makes a marriage to a BRUCE widow even more likely since there were family connections in TN. Carol Dugger

Hi all, Starting tomorrow, September 3, 2002, the hours for the Mary Smith Fay genealogy library in Carmi will be from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm, Tuesday through Friday. Saturday hours will only be by appointment. The library hours had been from 10 am to 2 pm, but there were few early visitors and many who came late in the business day. As always, the library is located in the old Carnegie library, and is available by phone at 618-382-8425. The library is not yet online but that should change soon. If you are in Carmi area stop by for a good collection of local and regional materials. Cindy Birk Conley White County Historical Society

Surnames: LOPAS, Spencer, Stanley Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Yh.2ADE/1938 Message Board Post: Jospeh Spencer and Nancy Stanley were married in 1848 in Edwards County. They may have been married nearer to Grayville than to Albion. Their granddaughter, Reva Goodman Stroh wrote to me in 1981. She wrote that her grandparents had been married by the Rev. T. C. Lopas. However, she failed to mention the religious affiliation or whether it was a church wedding. Joseph Spencer was christened a Roman Catholic in 1816 in Brindle, Lancashire, England. Although he had two sisters that were Sisters of the Order of St. Joseph of Corondolet, I believe he at some point in his life left the Catholic Church and became a Primitive Baptist. I am questioning whether Rev. Lopas might have been a Father Lopas. The Stanleys had very large families and may have been Catholic, too. Does anyone else have a relative married by the Rev. T. C. Lopas in the middle of the Nineteenth Century? In either White or Edwards County? Could he have been a travelling priest? Was he a local minister in Grayville or Albion?

I have been unable to find a Rosa Drake in White Co but I think Noah's mother died in the 1880s, so if your dates are about right, your Rosa and her husband would not have been much older than he was. Have you ever heard of any connection between your Rosa Pearl and a Willis family? --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance - Get real-time stock quotes

One of his daughters was named Rosa Pearl, or Pearline, supposedly for this woman. Noah md. Melvinia "Millie" Tucker in 1899 and moved to NE Arkansas . He married Rosa Pearl Bowles (sp?) around 1895. It seems there are Drakes and Harveys, but I can't find a Harvey Drake. Family lore says he was killed by a train in Carmi in 1906. Rosa's descendants ended up in SE Missouri. Any help appreciated. --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance - Get real-time stock quotes

Can someone please help me sort out some facts about Benjamin F. Bruce (b. abt 1825 ) ? He was married to Tabitha W. Stephens in 1845. I have been advised that Tabitha married William Gray in 1848 and had several children with William.I did not find this marriage to William on the IL Statewide Marriages. That was a pretty quick death for Benjamin and remarriage for Tabitha but then things happened pretty fast in those days. What I would like to know is, when did Benjamin F. Bruce die? Waiting with bated breath :) !! Carol Dugger
