Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Yh.2ADE/1954.1.1 Message Board Post: Dear Evalyn: Yes, this Elizabeth connects to the Maricle family of White County. I'm not an expert on this branch of the family, but I believe Elizabeth is the daugther of Jacob Maricle (b. ca. 1783 in Camden, NJ, son of George Maricle, b. ca. 1755) and Sarah Arbaugh (b. April 15, 1792 in Lewisburg, Greenbrier Co., WVA). Elizabeth Maricle was born June 14, 1820 (Greenbrier Co., WVA) and she was married Jan. 4, 1837 in TN to James Tate, who was born Apr. 24, 1810. They were living in Saline IL at the time of the 1850 Census. James died on Nov. 24, 1880. Elizabeth died Feb. 12, 1903. She is buried in the West Antioch Baptist Cemetery in Mill Shoals, White Co, IL. I would imagine that James is buried there as well, but I have not confirmed that. They had a big family--I think 14 children. Jerry Mericle, Silvetta Parsons, and Gordon Maricle are good sources of info on this branch of the family. Sincerely, Mimi Kotner.

Surnames: Maricle, Mericle, Markle, Miracle, Merkle Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Yh.2ADE/1954 Message Board Post: I post this information for those who are interested in the Maricles (all variants) of New Jersey who then moved to West Virginia, then to Tennessee, and then to White/Wayne Counties, IL. --George Maricle Jr. of Gloucester Co., NJ (b. ca. 1755- d. shortly after 1850 in Mill Shoals, IL). Revolutionary War veteran who served in the Third Battalion of Gloucester County Militia under Col. Richard Somers. --George Maricle Sr. of Gloucester Co., NJ (b. ca. 1735- d. ca. 1829 in Gloucester Co., NJ) I located George Maricle Sr., (father of George Jr. listed above) in the following record (available in book and on microfilm from the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah): My source: "Index to New Jersey Wills 1688-1890: The Testators, Vol. II, K-Z" The index to this volume contains a "George Merriele from Gloucester Co., Inventory #03902H." An inventory is a simple legal listing of George's few personal items he had at the time he died in 1829 (he did not leave a will, just an inventory). The record of George Maricle Sr. is as follows: Inventory of George Maricle Sr. (ca. 1735-ca. 1829) [Front page; my comments in brackets] "3902H, Inventory of George Mericle dec. [deceased]. Proven Mar 17, 1829 and recorded in the Surrogates Office at Woodbury [Capital of Gloucester Co.] in Lib. [libris] No 5 folio 329 of Inventories." [Clerk's signature follows.] [The inventory] "The amount of the Property of George Merricle now deceased, as Appraised by the Subscribers freeholders in the county of Gloucester...." ITEM VALUE Cask none Book accounts 1.00 1 Bed striped tick packed and bedding, etc. 2.50 Chest .50 5 Chairs 1 [illegible] 1.25 1 Table .25 1 [Do?]brough .40 Table and Barrel .65 Iron Pots, tea kettle and spiders 2.00 Cupboard .25 Bucket, half bushel .18 1/2 Straw bed and sundries 1.12 1/2 Chest .50 Barrel feathers and box .25 Lot of sundrys [illegible] Barrels .50 1 Bedstead (or bedstand) [illegible] color [illegible] 1.00 Hand saw hay nife [knife] and sickell [sickle] 37 1/2 2 hachets [hatchets] .25 Basket 1.00 [Some items are not visible at this point, due to an ink spill across the inventory--looks like clerk spilled his inkwell on the page!] Crockery 1.72 [Illegible] gimblets and sundrys [sundries] .25 [Illegible] Gun .75 [illegible] wait[illegible] and sundrys 1.75 Lot of sundrys, axes, hoos [hoes], forks [pitchforks?] 2.00 A lot of green corn 1.50 A lot of knives and forks 18 3/4 TOTAL: $21.82 3/4 "We the subscribers being called on to appraise the Personal Property of George Merricle deceased do certify the within to be just and true price to the best of our knowledge." [Signed] Thomas North and Michael Owen [appraiser and county clerk] [There is another paragraph of legal boilerplate copy signed and dated March 17, 1829 by Thomas North] [Last paragraph of the inventory, which is the key paragraph] "George Mericale, adm. [administrator] of George Mericle, late of the County of Gloucester deceased being duly affirmed swearing to serve saith that the within writing contains a true and perfect Inventory of the supplies, the goods, chattels herewith of said deceased insofar as [illegible] to his knowledge appropriate in to the [illegible]." This legal boilerplate copy is then signed with the mark of "George Mericle." I believe that this signed "mark" confirms that the George Mericle listed above who signed his mark is one and the same person as George Maricle (Mericle, Markle,) b. 1755 in Gloucester Co and that he is the son of the deceased referred to in this document. He was living and came back to Gloucester Co. from W. Virginia to take care of his father's personal property at death and signed the necessary legal document, this inventory. His father, George Maricle Sr., was born ca. 1735 and he lived in Gloucester Co., N.J. when he d. ca. 1829. From the inventory items! , I think it's fair to say that George Sr. was a farmer. Both Georges lived to very old ages. My next research step will be to examine records from Philadelphia in an effort to locate the immigrant ancestor. (I have already thoroughly examined all existing church/bible records on microfilm from Gloucester Co. NJ and several books looking for Maricle info with no luck). Questions and comments are welcome. I'd like to hear from other family members about the following: --Can anyone tell me if George Sr. is the immigrant ancestor? Surely, this narrows down the field. Please let me know!!!!! --Does anyone have a tie-in on George Sr. to the Markels/Merkels, etc. from Berks County, PA? --Does anyone know the wife of George Sr.? Her name, where she was from, etc. --I think George Maricle Jr. had two brothers living in Warren County, NJ. A Nathan and a Christopher. Am in the process of researching these individuals. Info on them is most welcome. My Maricle line: George, George, Henry Clinton, Robert Henry, Orson Harry, Earl Pulleyblank, Jane Field, then me. 3. I am not an authority, but it is my understanding that the Heritage Site is only available for libraries at this stage. Our local library (CA) has been discussing the possiblity of subscribing. Ancestry.com has a subscription fee to access the census, etc. I believe the "Census On Line" site is still active. It does have the cenus for some areas, but there is no index. I am always greatful to the volunteers who extract data and put indexes and other searchable data online. THANKS to ALL of you who spend so much time and effort to assist us with our research. 3. Janean, If the census is 1850 or after, I can usually sort people out looking for spouses and children, as well as children, and working that along with other information I have on the family. Its not easy, but using the 1920 census I was able to find my Savage/Jamerson connection, as I knew that the person I was looking for died in Claredon, Arkansas in 1921, and found her and her husband, who we thought died in 1892, and a daughter we never knew about. Going back before 1850 is a lot harder, and I need to spend more time comparing bible listings and such to the census takers notes. I have seldom used the mortality tables. I find marriage transcriptions--especially after 1880 when parents names are listed--to be about the best single item around, and then obituaries, but the census does such a good job of putting people in a place and a time that my research isn't done without it. It appears to be available at certain times to everyone based on all the emails I've been reading on this list. But, it is connected to the library. So it may be open to the public only when the library is connected?? I didn't see a link to contact anyone to ask a direct question about access. 2. <PRE>I have trouble understanding censuses totally. If you are not sure that the person in the census is YOUR person, how do you know who they are. I have looked at many censuses and see lots of families with same last name living near each other but how do you know they are the John Doe you have? Or, they only sometimes have first initials.

    3. Hi all, Kinda wish now that I hadn't sent the free census info to the Lists, but it really was working and free when I did. Sure did get the list active for a while though. <grin> I'm sure that the info must have been sent to many of the mailing lists and am wondering if the Library sites got so congested that they closed it to all but their patrons.--Fremont was asking for library bar code last night-- Sorry to have caused so much confusion, but it was a "good thing" while it lasted. Sorry Hi all, Tonight I could not get into the censuses either, directly or through the library. It must be something the library does, which doesn't look to be available to consumers. Last night I looked up a few people, but then their system crashed, and I was getting pages for Pennsylvania when I wanted Calhoun, Kentucky. I am a subscriber to the ancestry census service, which doesn't have indexes for most of 1860, 70, 80, 1900, 10 or 30. I have found some good stuff in it, and also like the LDS 1880 census transcription, which has a bunch of CDs but is only $50. You can never do too much census work. Cindy
