My family connections to the Lick Creek Cemetery and Church: from the church records. Some of which are on microfilm at the LDS Family History Center. In 1827 (Robert) Coleman (Hoskins) joined the Lick Creek Primitive Baptist Church by experience. In July, 1832 he reported himself to the congregation for being intoxicated. They forgave him. He was ordained by this church as a preacher of the Old School Baptist. Also, joining the Lick Creek Primitive Baptist Church was his sister Nancy in 1826 and Margaret Hoskins (sister or wife?) in 1836. By 1839 the church had ordained him to preach, according to the church meeting minutes. "He arrived in White Co., Illinois as a young lad. His first wife was Margaret S Vought, and his second wife Mrs. Lucretia Chapman, lived to 86 years." (from Historical Sketch of White Co., Illinois 1883). Robert Spence born in Linlithglow , Scotland is buried there. Robert Spence apprenticed as a wheelright in early life and then studied Architecture working with Mr. Luce in Edinburgh before he immigrated to America in 1817. He arrived in New York City working at a carpenter's trade. Then moved to Utica, where he helped build the first bridge across the Mohawh River. In 1819 he headed to Pittsburg then on down the Ohio to Cincinnati. Here he heard that New Orleans was a good place for carpenters and headed there. The river was low so the boat had to tie up and he determined to go to St Louis instead carrying his tools in a lumber cart. About Sacramento, Ill he stopped with Robert Wilson where he left his tools and continured on to Carmi a village of a few houses. Marrying the daughter of Robert Wilson,he lived near him for several years. In 1829 they moved to Carmi, Ill until 1842 as he worked his trade. At the White Co. Courthouse he declared his US citizenship on April 9,1831. History of[White County - 1883] Jeannette Maxey billmaxey@compuserve.com

<Your William & Benjamin Bruce would be the brothers to Isaac Jones Bruce who married Lucy Walters daughter of Anderson & Elizabeth (Joyner)Walters. Anderson would be my gggf grandmother, Martha Gossett's brother.> Jeff, the in formation I have is Isaac Jones Bruce is the son of Robert BRUCE (B. abt 1764 Culpeper Co VA) d. 1833 and Margaret PARLIER . They were married in 1813 in Wilkes Co NC and the only two children I have listed for them--which of course doesn't mean there weren't others--are: William Mattison Bruce b. 1814 and Isaac Jones Bruce b. 1815. Robert Bruce above was the brother of Benjamin and my ggggf William Bruce (father of my gggm Milly Bruce DUGGER) as well as several other siblings. Of course all the names are just about interchangeable in all these Bruce families so it is hard to sort out which belonged to which bunch! Isaac Jones then proceeded to marry Lucy Walter Dec 3, 1840 in White Co. They had the following children: Elizabeth b. abt 1841, William A. abt 1843, James T abt 1846, Berry T. abt 1849, Mary A. abt 1852, Susan V. abt 1854, Albert N. abt 1858, Lucy L. abt 1861, Josephus abt 1863 and Thomas J abt 1866. My sources for the children are the White CO 1880 and 1860 Census records. Isaac Jones' brother, William Mattison ,married Sarah Maria Millspaugh March 5, 1835 according to the History of White Co. Their children were Thomas, Franklin, a daughter unknown, Isaac T., Solomon S. and Robert J., source also the History of White Co. I will be very interested to hear what you have to say about this. Looks to me like we are at the very least "cousins" , if a few times removed. I am anxious to get your side of the story here. This is the best BRUCE lead I have had in a couple of years! Hurrah! Carol Dugger
I do not have any information on Poole being connected to the Bruce family. I am still working back in the 1880s on the Bruce lines so my information, or rather, lack of same, is in that time period. Carol Dugger
This obit had his last name listed as Godfrey, but that must have been a typo as the rest of the article seems to confirm his name was Alexander E. Bruce. Carol Dugger Alexander Bruce GODFREY January 12, 2003 Alexander E. Bruce, 87, died at 1:05 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, at St. Anthonys Health Center, Alton. He was born July 12, 1915, in Ridgeway, Ill., to Orval Pool and Ida Jerrells Bruce, now deceased. He married the former Vesta Eilene Bradshaw May 27, 1939, in Alton. She died May 2, 1996. A member of the Presbyterian Church and the Society of Engineers, he formerly owned and operated his own design and development company for 35 years. Surviving are two sons and their wives, Larry and Bobbi Bruce of St. Charles, Mo., Richard and Teri Bruce of Indianapolis; two grandsons; and a brother and his wife, Willard C. and Bernie Bruce of Godfrey. Re Alexander E. BRUCE: I do not have any information about this Alexander BRUCE in my files, but I do suspect that he is a branch of the Bruce family from which I descend. I have no information about anyone named Wilkerson in my files in connection with the BRUCE line. I am more inclined to think this Alexander may be from the PHIPPS branch of the family, but as I said, I don't know for sure. There were a lot of Bruces and my own line comes from my gggm Milly BRUCE (b. 1788) who married Dread DUGGER in Tennessee and then moved to Omaha, IL in around 1832. Milly had several brothers, Walker, Littleton, Jefferson, Madison and Benjamin BRUCE, and several sisters as well. Milly's father was William BRUCE (wife named Mary) and William's brother Benjamin and married Mary Crysel then came out from VA ending up in White Co IL. Benjamin's line is the main White Co IL line which gets into the TROUSDALE and PHIPPS lines in White Co. Always seeking more data on them! Carol Dugger
JoAnn and all, The Lick Creek photo is up at www.rootsweb.com/~ilwhite2/lickcreek.html . John, I hope to put the Lick Creek photo on the county web page this evening. I have been adding some obits and wills recently. Elder Robert L Webb <bwebb9@juno.com>, who is the Primitive Baptist librarian and historian says he has Lick Creek records from 1824 to 1984. There may also be some at the genealogy library in Carmi as well. I need to go out there and take photos of how it has been cleared off, and see if the one or two primitive baptists I know have info on how it was closed. My understanding is that for several years church members from throughout the county rotated services between the several country churches and had potlucks to keep all of them going.
