Is Lepo in White County, Illinois? Karen
There is no Lepo (or Leppo or Lepoe) listed on the USGS's GNIS site anywhere in the US. Is it a historical site? --- KPhill2906@aol.com wrote: > Is Lepo in White County, Illinois? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! DSL - Now only $29.95 per month! http://sbc.yahoo.com
I believe there was an Independent(and/or Improved) Order of Red Men many years back - may still be? Would make sense that they would dress up as described. Then of course there are the Odd Fellows...very odd <grin>. Suggest a Google.com advanced search on the exact phrase "order of red men". --- SSpunk@aol.com wrote: > I have just been given some pics (jpegs) of my > Job Rister & some of the > family. > One of them is a group shot of Job Rister in > Indian garb. I have just been given some pics (jpegs) of my Job Rister & some of the family. One of them is a group shot of Job Rister in Indian garb. As most everyone is in the same garb of varying ranks, I assume it is a fraternal order of some kind. 3 men have suits on with a sash from right shoulder across & down with an emblem of some sort applied to it. (something in a circle). This could have been some group set up for a parade I suppose. A flag in the background has 48 stars in it so it would be post 1913. HIGHLY unlikely to be masonic. No moose or elk in the pic either. Just a buncha "Indians". They are also carrying different items, knife, tomahawk, rifle, peace pipe. ANY IDEAS ?? Thanks steve sspunk@aol.com ps I can send a jpeg if needed
Hello, I am not one to send bulk emails, but like many of you I have been distressed over the future of the Old Slave House, located in Gallatin County, since it was closed by the Sisk family about seven years ago. The State of Illinois purchased the 1834 home in 2000, and its furnishings in 2003. Unfortunately, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, the agency given dominion over the property, has no money to open the home, and does not have the legal authority to partner with any non-profit or private company to get the place going. Tonight I attended a meeting in Eldorado where Jon Musgrave, long a researcher about the controversial property, set forth an action plan. You can read the plan and the history of the home at http://www.illinoishistory.com/ . Please look at this, and if you agree with his ideas give the governor and your local elected officials a call. To get the house back in business it will take grassroots support from all over Southern Illinois. Cindy Birk Conley Carmi, IL
Hi, a few years back my father (James Zuber) brought home an old book of beautiful postcards, all mailed to Mrs. Augusta Schemet of 1118 E. Illinois St. in Evansville. I have read through all these postcards, trying to determine a family line. I would love to send this beautiful, fragile book (circa 1910) to its rightful owner. The postcards are of Evansville, DC, SD, and generally all over. This family traveled a lot. Lines I can determine are-- Mrs. Augusta Schemet, children are Ida (living in Olney or Grayville, IL?), Herbert (evidently worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and lived in DC and probably Greenwood SD), William (lived in McCleansboro, IL. Augusta's sisters were Mrs. Wm Koelling, Maggie, and Lena (could all be the same person). Nieces and nephews to Gusta were Irene Juncker, Evertt and Albert (no last names). I have no use for this fragile scrapbook, and should something happen to me, my children probably would discard it-- not knowing what to do with it. Please contact me, if you are of this line: Helen Zuber Keusch, 6500 S. I have the Garrison line, also. I show Sylvania died in 1826. I show Ester Roberts married in Surrey County, Kentucky between 1773-74 (See page 12 of The Garrison and Allied Families book.) I show James died March 1840 (Treasury records). David Thomas was born May 19, 1792. He married Elizabeth Taylor on November 16, 1815 in Barren County, Kentucky. I show he died June 22, 1858. Marvin: re: your info on Ancestry.Com Our line is: David to Seaman - to James RF to Amy Viola Garrison I think my info on Seaman is correct. Seaman Garrison born: 2-5-1820 in Illinois parents: David Thomas Garrison Elizabeth Taylor Garrison wed: 10-16-1842 in Illinois to Sylvania Barnes b 2-28-1828 in Illinois parents of Sylvania and date of death unknown died: 1-10-1899 Hamilton County, Il and buried at Garrison Cemetery. Sylvania is (assuming) buried next to him - her name is on stone but not her date of death. Of their many children, ours is: James R.F. Garrison b. 7-20-1846 HCI wed: 11-7-1872 to Lumira Williamson b 4-22-1850 in Illinois died: 2-11-1897 HCI Lumira remarried to S.S. Garvin 7-1-1900 and on down to their daughter, Amy Viola Garrison b 1875 wed John Hutchcraft parents of Clyde Hutchcraft father of Robert Hutchcraft, my husband. I see many entires on Ancestry with Seaman's date of birth as 1813. His parents, David Garrison and Elizabeth Taylor Garrison didn't marry until 1815 in Barren County KY and came to White County in 1818. Shall we all try to sort this out? Steve, I didn't recognize the names, and I am not related, but there are several Risters mentioned in a journal on the Gallatin County pages. Maybe some of these are related to your family. <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilgalla2/bennettjournal.html">http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilgalla2/bennettjournal.html</A>

Go to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows site to learn how to find out about past members, loges, etc. and to whom to write for info. www.ioof.org/ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Calendar - Free online calendar with sync to Outlook(TM). http://calendar.yahoo.com
Pat, Actually, there are lots of cemeteries called IOOF, or at least established by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, in all of those counties. I don't remember the big cemetery in Grayville, Oak Grove, being called an IOOF, but I know the big cemetery in Enfield, which was established before the Oddfellows were around, is sometimes called the IOOF cemetery, meaning they had some involvement. There is a cemetery in Norris City called IOOF, but your best bet would be to look for the Illinois State Genealogy Society web page, which has had a listing of most all the cemeteries in the state, to look for likely candidates. Hi - 1840 Marriage records won't show much other than the bride & groom, unless they were underage, then there might be a permission slip. The 1893 records list the parents. The Mary Smith Fay Genealogy Library has microfilm of the August 11, 1855-Nov. 24, 1858 Grayville Independent Newspaper; I doubt that previous issues were microfilmed, if there were any, but am not familiar with what the Grayville library has. The best place to look for land records would be the courthouse, though there is a book at the MSF library. They also have books of obituary extractions from Carmi Newspapers from 1816 onward. By the way, I gave you the wrong address for the library - it's 203 N. Does anyone know if their was a Odd Fellows Lodge & or cemetery in White, Edwards or Wabash Counties in early 1800's? If so is there a members list available? Thanks! Pat Jeffries Bryant
Pat & Cindy: Thank you both very much! Does anyone know what info might be on 1840 & 1893 White County Marriage records? Would Grayville library have old newspapers of 1835 -1855 ? Where would be the best place to look for land records of that time? Does White County have death records of that time? Don't know the parents of Robert JEFFRIES but they may have been the William JEFFREYS ( Robert is said to have changed spelling) & Margaret Ann SESLEY married in White County 8-6-1840. SESLEY is probably suppose to be LESLEY, I think. You ladies are both doing a great job! Thanks for all your hard work & long hours! Pat Jeffries Bryant
