3. Janis, I did not see this as preaching, but a good suggestion. I discovered many months ago that our local library had this service available to anyone with a library card and have found it to be a well used site. It would be worth anyone's time to check. So sorry, not my intent at all. Just that every now and then one of these windows is open for a bit, then disappears. Heritage Quest really is a great resource, and I couldn't live without it. If you have a chance to obtain full access through your library, it is well worth it. Again, my apologies to anyone who might have thought that I was taking issue with the earlier posting. 3. Heritage Quest is paid for by many major libraries across the country, and provided as a free service to those holding local library cards. Call your local library - or any library which will allow you to obtain a card - and see if they offer this service. I get it from the Seattle Public Library system. 1. [ILWHITE] Clevenger -Halls- Sinnett
2. I too have been away from the mailing list and figured it might be a good time to throw out a line on my families, The Clevengers and the Halls. William Andrew Clevenger was married to Nancy Ann Thompson on Jan 21, 1857. He married Nancy Jane Sinnett in White County, IL in 1868. Only one problem-- he never bothered with DIVORCE. Yep, thats right. He was caught and wife number one, sued for divorce based on the fact that he had another family in White County, and she and her offspring lived in Wayne County. Now the story doesn't end there. He unexpectedly died in Springerton in 1872. Of what I don't know. Nancy Jane Sinnett Clevenger married John Heritage in 1874. One day he got up and took the horse out on an errand and never came back. They found the horse, but no JOHN. Well now, 120 years go by and I am sitting in the Cole County, IL courthouse and there is a very sweet lady helping me out with my Stevens family when we start talking about the various courthouses of Illinois-- Yep you guessed it-- she was a granddaughter of John Heritage, who never did tell my ancestor that he had a wife in Cole County, IL married her in 1878. My Hall ancestor is Elizabeth Hall Clevenger Cross who was very active in the New Hope Church. Her second husband was Levi Cross who was an elder in the church. Thank you for reading my email. If you have any interest in these families, please contact me. Candee Hoff new email address genealogysix@aol.com

3. Karen, I think the computer program picked up "middlepoint" just because it has the letters l-e-p-o in the middle of it. That community was very small and really was just a post office and a store and railroad stop. Was your person from somewhere in Illinois? I would look in his home county to see if there is a neighborhood or even a street in the area that could have been the home to M. Jones, or if there was a phonetic spelling that could hold a key. Of course, when you get into possible misspellings there is no end--Dupo, El Paso, Depot, Leopold, etc. Cindy KPhill2906@aol.com wrote: > > I received some Spanish American Military Records yesterday. > > On one of the enlistment papers, it asked for the name and address of the > nearest relative. > > It was filled in as W. 2. I received some Spanish American Military Records yesterday. On one of the enlistment papers, it asked for the name and address of the nearest relative. It was filled in as W. Jones, Lepo, IL. When I went to www.geographicnameserver and looked up the county, it showed Middlepoint, IL. I wondered if Lepo was a "nickname". This has me baffled! Karen

3. It almost looks as though the first 4 and last 3 letters of Middlepoint were lost in the records(or were picked up by your geographic search engine as a letter string???) Did you receive an actual copy of an original record or just a transcription? If the former, you might be able to tell if something is missing; if the latter, the transcriber may have written down only what he/she could translate without properly indicating that it was incomplete. Just guesses... --- KPhill2906@aol.com wrote: > I received some Spanish American Military > Records yesterday. > > On one of the enlistment papers, it asked for > the name and address of the > nearest relative. > > It was filled in as W.
