I enjoy reading the articles in the Roots & Branches. My mailing address is NOT Huntington, IN 47542 as was listed on my Land/Zuber pedigree charts, BUT Huntingburg, IN 47542. Huntington is the home of vp Dan Quayle (the great Hoosier speller). So I hope that someone can correct that as I do not want any correspondence to "wander Indiana" in search of me. Huntington is up by Ft. Wayne (about 5 hrs from me). Huntingburg is about 50 miles due east of Mt. Carmel. The street address is correct, and the address label on the big envelope is correct. Also, I would like to know who the parents of Catherine GOODHART are? She md. Wm. Bost (of the Winkler family line). My g grandmother was Hannah Gutekunst (later changed to Goodart). Thanks and keep up the good work. Helen Zuber Keusch, 6500 S. Lake Charles, HUNTINGBURG, IN 47542 e-mail gkeusch@psci.net
Does anyone have any knowledge of Woodrow Wilson being related to George Washington, Zachary Taylor, or even Justice William Wilson of the Illinois Supreme Court. Janean
I don't know about the IL laws during the Civil War, but in IN, a soldier could enlist wherever he chose. My g grandfather, Abe JR Land, lived in Gibson Co., IN, enlisted with some of his relatives/friends at Poseyville in Posey CO., IN. And I am sure they could probably enlist in another state. So makes for happy hunting on these relatives! There were Dungys in White Co., IL in 1880, possibly before. I would like to tie them to the Franklin and Williamson Co., IL Dungys. I am looking for anyone with knowledge of Judge William Wilson b. 1795 Loudoun Co. Va., lived in KY for a short time and d. 1857 in White Co. IL He was the Justice of the Supreme Court for Illinois 1819-1814. Janean
Men occasionally enlisted in places other than where they lived for several reasons. However, I should point out that there was a John Bond, 60, living in Lasalle Co. IL in 1870 (source: US census). A little old for a veteran, but could there be a connection, or a mix-up? --- ladybug <ladybug@arends-sons.com> wrote: > I have since learned this...I cannot figure out > WHY our "Captain" John Bond > of Hamilton County Il. would list a residence > of Ophir, Il. during the Civil > War? Ophir is in Lasalle Co., iL, near Mendota and Earlville. Almost all such geographic questions can be answered by the wonderful USGS GNIS site at geonames.usgs.gov/gnisform.html You can see a map of its location too. Enjoy! --- ladybug <ladybug@arends-sons.com> wrote: > Our Captain JOHN BOND b. 1816 KY > wed: Elizabeth Daily 1838 HCI > d. 6-25-1899 HCI > Enlisted Civil War 4-4-1865 Co I. 58th Inf. > Reg. There is an excellent site of local (Evansville area) obits online and it has several Zopfs. Address is: http://browning.evcpl.lib.in.us -- then select advanced search and type in your Zopf name. You can search the obits, also search for any individual by scrolling on down to the picture of Mr. Browning sitting at his computer. There is an site to open by the picture. Also, being a German name, it was pronouced with an "s" sound, and could be spelled Sopf, Soff, Zoff, Zope, Sope. Ancestry has quite a few Zopfs, but you have to be a member to access their census records. Hope this helps.
