Errors (and duplicate listings) are not uncommon in the censuses. Note age differences, Samuel listed as son not stepson, and Samuel's last name assumed to be Fowler in the 2nd listing. But I would guess the marriage date is wrong here - there just wasn't too much "shacking up" going on in those days, at least not this publicly. Perhaps it's the date the marriage was registered? If anyone has excess to an index for these census I would appreciate a look up for Clinton Burris, born IL (1876) and wife Rilla, born IL (1877). In 1900 they were in White Co. living parents Joseph and Margaret Burris. Enfield Township household 301. 1930 I found them in Venice City, Madison County, IL. Many thanks, Norm
Folks, Another dilema: in 1882 estate division of her bachelor Uncle Henry McGOWAN in Hyde Co., NC, Alemeda McGOWAN (b.1855), daughter of Wiley & Tabitha (Norris) McGOWAN of Saline Co., IL, she is listed as Alemeda FOWLER. In Illinois records I have found the following: Alexander FOWLER m. Mrs. Almeda WILKINS on Jan. 11, 1881 in Gallatin Co., IL. Also, her sister Rachel McGOWAN was married at the home of Alexander FOWLER. In the 1880 Census of Whitle Co., IL I found them listed twice: -------------------------------------------------- White Co., IL - Indian Creek p.413D Alexender Fowler 36 head Laborer IL/AL/TN Almada " 24 wife IL/TN/TN George F. Fowler 13 brother IL/AL/TN Samuel Wilkins 2 son IL/IL/IL -------------------------------------------------- White Co., IL - Indian Creek p.421D Alixander Fowler 35 head Laborer IL/TN/TN Almada " 25 wife IL/TN/TN George F. " 12 son IL/IL/IL Samuel W. " 3 son IL/IL/IL -------------------------------------------------- So, either the above marriage date is incorrect of Alexander and Alemeda lived together before they were married. Any information on Alexander FOWLER, b.c.1844 in Illinois, or the McGOWANS of Saline & White Co., IL, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, John McGowan mailto:jmack@carolina.net
Norm, Sometimes even the trickiest of spellings can't help find a person. I tried 2 different sources, one being Ancestry, for them in 1920 and came up empty. For 1910 White Co. He went by Lorenzo in 1900 and Clinton in 1930. Give me as much as possible to find them on Anscestry, I'll print out a sheet. I've tried every combination I could think of in the 1920 and came up empty. Folks, I have a small dilema. With John J. RUPERT (1836-1885) of White Co., IL, I have been told that he married three times. Of course, I am mainly interested in Anna McGowan since she was a niece of my gg grandfather. However, John J's. is listed as marrying his first two wives within a few weks of each other. While I'm sure this may be possible, I would appreciate it if anyone could check on it for me. Thanks very much. Here are the marriages I have for John J. Rupert/Rupart: 1st - Nancy J. Williams - April 5, 1857 in White Co, IL. 2nd - Elizabeth Nelson - April 30, 1857 in White Co, IL. 3rd - Anna McGowan - April 9, 1876 in White Co, IL. Also, any additional info on John J. Rupert would be appreciated. John McGowan mailto:jmack@carolina.net
Hi Norm, Could Clinton also use the name Lorenzo ? There is a Lorenzo Burris in 1910 White Co. , age matching those you gave , with wife Rella ( Rilla ). They are a few houses down from Joseph. Have not found them in 1920 yet. Let me know if you need the page # or the whole reading. Were these actual marriage returns or just applications for licenses? If the latter, then the first marriage may never have occurred. Of course, these could be two or more different people. There is, e.g., a 61-yr. old John Rupert in White Co. in 1860 and an (unmarried) 18-yr old in Woodford Co. IL that year. And in 1870, there is an apparently unmarried 33 yr old John Rupert in White Co., living with a Melvin family. None of them seem to be yours??? --- John McGowan <jmack@carolina.net> wrote: > Folks, > I have a small dilema. With John J. I have no idea but would imagine it very possible. My father was born in Mt. Vernon. That was the "big" city to go to nearest Carmi and Enfield. I have no locations for the Lands or Pyles but the Marlin's at least my direct line was in Carmi and Enfield. ----- Original Message ----- From: <BamiyanTourist@aol.com> To: <ILWHITE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, August 15, 2003 9:05 PM Subject: Re: [ILWHITE] Wilson > Were the Land, Pyle, and Marlin families in the Mt.
