Looking for any info of any kind on RISTER/REISTER/RIESTER and all variations in spelling. Located in White Co Ill from about 1905 on. I am a descendant of Job Calvin Rister/Sarah Samantha Jones. (Harmon Rister/Abraham Rister/Job Calvin Rister) Especially looking for copies of any and all printed and written material, and especially photographs. My Thanks Steve Sundahl 130 Stevens St Fairmont, WV 26554 or email: sspunk@aol.com
I'm looking for the following family: Surname: DENNIS They were in the White Co. census for 1840 & cannot find anything of them again until the mother & children show up in the 1860 census of Monroe Co., OH. She had remarried so I believe her 1st husband, Unknown Dennis, may have died in White Co. sometime in 1850. Eleanor's maiden name was HUFFMAN or HOFFMAN. Three of the children that were listed with her in the 1860 Monroe Co. census were born in IL not really sure of the older ones. Lwisa Dennis 31 July 1837 Possibly could be a typo & actually be Lisa Lucinda 9 Dec 1839 Susanna 17 Mar 1841 Lettisha 29 Apr 1843 Phillip 8 Feb 1845 Richard 8 Dec 1846 Mary 3 Mar 1849 They had another son, Elias Born in 1853, listed under her new husbands name but I believe he was also of the Dennis union. If Eleanor & Unknown's last child, Mary, was born in IL in 1849 and Elias was of the new marriage, she wouldn't have had a very long period of mourning between marriages. (But then that's my own opinion.) If anyone has knowledge of this family I would sure appreciate you contacting me via list or personally at (armann2@aol.com). Thank you. Sue Armann

This is hand typed copy of a letter from the previously mentioned William L Jones, s/o William Jackson Jones + Unknown congratulating his Niece Bertha Mae Rister Baker & John William Baker junior on the birth of their daughter (My mother) Shirley Dean Baker in 1924. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Springville, Calif. September 1, 1924 Mr and Mrs J W Baker Harrisburg, Ills Dear Nephew & Niece: Some days ago I received the news that "Shirley Dean" is visiting you. Congratulations to both of you. I am very sure that she is a most welcome guest in the Baker home, and that she brings happiness to the home and cheerfulness to the hearts of the father and mother. Some say "What is home without a mother ?" They may well add " What is home without a baby?" I hope all are well and doing well. I havee been trying for a long time to get a few spare moments to write to you. The weather has been real warm here for some time, during the day, and I have found it very tempting to do just as little as I could. I have also been suffering some with high-blood pressure for some time and perhaps I have been a little negligent about some things that I could at all posstpone. However I am feeling better and hope I may be my best again soon. This altitude (1032 feet) has no doubt, been a little too high for me in some respects. I suppose that Sarah has told you that I am planning on retiring from active service at the end of the Conference year (October 1st) ? That will make 30 consectutive years for me in the ministry, some of them under great disadvantages and that I fancy that I will enjoy a rest. Although I will need to do something to buy bread and toothpicks, or else visit among kinfolks. I think I shall remain in California during the coming winter, on account of my throat affliction. I have been preaching ever since I arrived in the state and have not gotten all the benifits of this climate. Have been helped quit a little. I would like extremely well to see all the Dear Ones but will have to forego that great pleasure indefinately unless they conclude to come to see me. Times have been pretty close all through this section of country and money is very scarce. Orange growers lost more than half of their crop in the freeze last winter and thousands of head of stock had to be killed on account of Foot and Mouth Disease. The scarcity of snow in the mountains has given the ranchers but little water for irrigating. Many Easterners are returning "Busted". We sometimes have rains in September. That would bring relief. God has not put all the good things in any one section of the country, and "Old Illinois" is not the most God-forsaken place on the earth. Remember me kindly to all the kinfolk and let me hear from you as often as convenient. Yours with lots of LOVE Good by. W L JONES (signed) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I must state that my Mother is still with us and still being a mom. A great great grand mom. Don't let her fool you, she LOVES that part. I must admit that when ever I read this letter, I feel different things from it. I catch abit of happiness in the beginning, harsh, hard, but happy. Sadness that he never got the time to do all the things that he wanted to do. A statement that his health was poor and that he hoped the winter would help firm him up. And most of all a sadness for the folks that had traveled out there and went bust. Shades of Grapes of Wrath !! (One of Henry Fonda's BEST). I got the feeling that the only way he made it home was in a pine box, as he supposedly died c 1925. Thanks for listening Steve sspunk@aol.com
Sarah Samantha Jones was the d/o William Jackson (?) Jones bc 1817 Va + Mary Jane Campbell b 3/19/1834 Illinois Sarah b 6/6/1871 White Co Ill William d between 1870-1880 unknown location Mary Jane Campbell Jones d 1/26/1905 White Co Ill The only marraige I can find for a Jones/Campbell that fits is in 1868 in Scott Co Ill. This all fits if this is an m2 for William, which seems also to fit. And in fact it almost looks like an m3 for William, if the ages are correct, and even an m2 for Mary Jane. altho no other children are listed for her. Another point of fact is that these Jones were active in the Primative Baptist Church early on along with some of my Risters. William L Jones, was a minister for many years, and was located in Merced County area of Ca for quite awhile. Now HE was buried back here in probably Saline or White Co in 1925 or so. What am I looking for, is that some kind soul check their data for these other Jones and see if they might have some of them with some additional data, that may help me narrow it down some more. This Jobes family SEEMINGLY does not fit into the known Jones of the area that everyone ELSE seems to be researching. lol THANKS to all Steve sspunk@aol.com >>>> Descendants of William Jackson Jones 1 William Jackson Jones b: 1817 in Virginia d: Bef. 1880 in William R ??? There was an article in a recent issue of the Wayne County Press about a fundraiser to help restore some of the stones at the Liberty Cemetery (Mill Shoals Township). Vandals damaged about 80 stones in the old section of the cemetery about ten years ago. The Cemetery Association of Burnt Prairie is taking donations to help with the restoration. According to the article it will take $20 to $50 to repair each stone. Donations can be sent to: Cemetery Association of Burnt Prairie, P.O. Box 24, Burnt Prairie, IL, 62820. I'm not involved in this project, live hundreds of miles away, but thought some on the list might find it interesting. Diane Bunting Lehner
Here is what I have learned re: WILLIAM LEONARD BOND b. 1-21-1901 Hamilton County s/o John Edward BOND & Edith M. (Eda) DAVIS Bond m. Ida Bernice SCHELL 12-13-1924 in Garrison, HCI div.? when/where - she remarried to WILLEMAN m. Della (Johnson?) after Dec 1947 - she may have been from the Ozarks. Bill Bond and wife/wives lived in Wayne County at one time. d. 5-12-1948 - where? buried @ Blooming Grove HCI. RE: A letter dated 12-17-1947 Wayne City, Il. from Wm. Bond to his sister, Agnes Bond (in possession of her daughter, Beverly in Danville.) "Sis, I have a sweetheart down in the Ozark mountain where I may make my home before long. I have been down there four times since July, fishing. HA HA. She lives on banks of current river where the water is as clear as glass. You can see a fish for 50 yards - ......." "....still clerk in Hardware Store where I been for almost 5 years...I make $41.50 3week; but I just draw $35 as US gets the $6.50 because I am a batchler." ."...your Brother, Wm. L. Bond" So, even though he is buried in McLeansboro, I wonder if he did live in the Ozarks and returned for burial? And, he surely was not married for very long? Appreciate hearing any input on these surnames. Gail Hahn Hutchcraft ladybug@arends-sons.com
Happened to be going through old things and just wanted to let anyone know who doesn't already that they may need to look for their missing people passing away in the 1925 Tri State Tornado. Below are three articles with lots of names. Also the White co. Historical society provided me with a copy of the White Co. Democrat listing official list of dead in White Co. as follows: John Henry Frymire John H. Wilson (my gg-grandfather) Edna Fern Wilson Mrs. Robert Clark Alwin Rhein and Mrs. Alwin Rhein Mrs. Jack Murdach Mrs. George Akers William Richardson William Dietz Snowden Biggerstaff Jeff McMurtry Charles W. ARgo Delbert Warthen Mrs. Oral Warthen Harold Edward WArthen Mrs. ARmintie Smith Mrs. John J. Winter, Sr. George Speck Fred Bennett Mrs. James M. Stokes Mrs. Kelly Fitzgerald Mrs. Harry Maurer Vernon Miller Wilburn Felty Herman Bingman Mrs. Oscar Phillips NOTE: Anumber of people killed just across the line in Hamilton Co. were brought to Enfield and were classed in the White Co. list of dead. If you write to the Historical Society (ask how much) they will look the obits up for you. On my page with John Wilson is has the obit for John Henry Frymire and Mary E. Garrison although it doesn't say she died in the tornado.
