I'm a little confused. I have no Thomas Carpenter, who is he? I have no wife for my William Shook so how do you know this is yours. Here is what I have: Copied from the History of Jefferson Co. IL, Globe Publ. C. Chicago. 1883. SAMUEL W. CARPENTER: S.W. Carpenter, miller, Dix, was born in Knox Co. KY on January 5, 1812, son of Benjamin and Melia (Shook) Carpenter. Her father, William Shook, was a native of German, and her mother an Englishwoman. Both died in Bedford Co. TN. Benjamin was engaged in boating on the Mississippi at the time of his death, but his family resided in Indiana at the time. His widow then removed to TN with her family to her people, where they resided unti 1830 when they came to Jefferson Co. where she died. She was the mother of seven children. Samuel and brother Jesse were the only ones still alive in 1883. Samuel went into partnership with his son William R.; purchased a mill to do custom grinding. March 7, 1833 Samuel married Lucinda O. Stockton. She was born in IL, daughter of Robert and Phoebe Stockton. Twelve children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, nine of who still survive - Phoebe C. Maxey, Robert W.; William R.; Margaret Spiller, Mary L. Frost, Jemima M. Beagle, Sarah T. Williams, Helen M. Metzenthin, and Isaac D. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics he is Democratic and for about 40 years has acted as Justice of the Peace. For eight years he was Associate Justice of the county. He is one of the few survivors of the Black Hawk war. Other surnames that married into this Carpenter family are: Elliot; Fyke; Maxey; Hutchinson; Spiller; Frost; McGuire; Stockton; Elkins; Blaylock; Long; Williams; Beagle; Metzenthine; Crosnoe (my line); Berry; Atwood. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christine Walters" <chrisw1940@yahoo.com> To: <JRay38@neo.rr.com> Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2003 11:56 PM Subject: Shook/Hart > Hi Janean > > The one that would concern me the most is William Shook who died in Bedford Co had a > daughter named Melia.. married Benjamin Carpenter. All the Harrelson books were sold at GSSI. Mrs. Harrelson refused permission to reprint. The Felty books are still for sale. Tullyne's email is Tullyne2@yahoo.com. Jeanette
Gail, There is a copy of the Harrelson book here in Carbondale. Give me the names again. However, not all the names are in the book. I got a copy of my great grandfather's marriage from Mcleansboro about 25 years ago. It is not in the book. Jeanette
Hi Carol, Interesting possibility - I don't happen to have a David III born 1802 Mercer KY but I did have a Shook/Hart connection in Crawford Co IL that I've had a lot of trouble with. It was Miles Hart b abt 1823 in KY who married Temperance Shook in 1846. They did name a son named David who was born in 1848. I've never been able to find out who Miles Harts father was - could have been David, could have been anybody. Miles was born in KY and moved to Crawford Co IL - which isn't all that close to Macoupin but they did manage to get around quite well. I know that somewhere in this line I thought I saw some mention of Macoupin but then it all runs together sometimes. If its not a lot of trouble would you just send me the information and maybe I can figure out some connection if there is one. My Catherine HART married James SHOOK which is why that Crawford IL couple sticks in my mind. Their daughter Hannah Elizabeth SHOOK is my ancestor. Thanks for the offer to help.. I appreciate it.. Copies of the Felty Books by Harrelson are in the Mary Smith Fay Gen. Library of White County, IL, 618-382-8425. Mrs. Harrelson gave permission to Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois at Carterville to publish the books. They are very large, hardbound, and therefore quite expensive. Ask for Tullyne Oliver. IL State Marriage Records for Hamilton County? I find it a good game on that site to enter a query about a common surname (no first name) of Hamilton County. See what comes up. No Millers. No Malones. No Nations. How about a common name like Smith? Only one, from 1822. They used to have Hamilton Co. up to either 1854 (the date Felty's book of Hamilton Co. marriages went through) or 1870 (from Harrelson's book). When the site was revamped, all of Hamilton Co. marriages seemed to disappear. Well, I did find that one Smith marriage! I'd like to know what other Hamilton Co. marriages, if any, are actually available on that site. Shirley
Hamilton County did not allow their records to be placed in the Illinois State Marriage Index. However, there was a book of marriages done several years ago by a resident in Hamilton Co. He is now deceased but the book is still arround. I believe it was Ralph Harrelson who did the book. The last I heard his widow was still alive. Jeanette
Have you tried the IL state marriage records? Their site is: http://www.sos.state.il.us/GenealogyMWeb/refform.html Go to databases and scroll down to the marriages. You can enter a statewide search or county search. Be aware of the misspellings of surnames. It can give you a date. Good luck. On the IL Statewide marriage Index, the Hamilton Co. list includes only 1821-1824. To find all marriages starting with "M", for example, enter only the first letter. There aren't mnay. --- BeeandBop31@aol.com wrote: > IL State Marriage Records for Hamilton County? > I find it a good game on that > site to enter a query about a common surname > (no first name) of Hamilton > County.
