    1. [ILWHITE] immigration
    2. cindy
    3. Hi all, >From the Vanderburgh County list I got this interesting comment about how immigrants got to Southern Indiana: "Three routes brought German immigrants to Indiana: (1) by landing at New York and continuing by way of the Great Lakes and the canals, (2) by landing at Baltimore and traveling overland by wagon for 2 weeks to Wheeling, West Virginia, then by boat down the Ohio River, and (3) by way of the Mississippi River. The second route was the safest, also the most expensive. The first route was so hazardous that Lake Erie was called the German graveyard. The voyage by way of the Mississippi River was also hazardous. The paddle boats had to go upstream and some of the boilers overheated and exploded, the boats burned, and the loss of life and possessions was heavy. Some boats sank, some were caught on sand bars and jetties. However, almost all of the immigrants came this way. It cost about half as much to come by way of New Orleans as by way of the Great Lakes. Most Knox County settlers came via the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, then by wagon from Evansville." HTH Cindy

    3. This will muddy the waters more-- I checked on the site with rootsweb on the Vanderburgh Cem and there is no Maple Grove. I found the site by going into google.com and putting in Vanderburgh County Indiana cemeteries and then clicking on the first or second site-- both are the same. This site doesn't tell you who is buried where, but lists the cemeteries and where they are. Maybe Posey or Gibson might have a Maple Grove. Seems the Posey and Gibson County folk migrated a lot into IL. Good luck. Helen Zuber Keusch forever searching in the LAND, EDWARDS, WOFFORD, REEVES, MULLINIKS, CRABTREE, GOODWIN, CHAPMAN, BENNETT, ZUBER, BANGERT, ANTHIS, GOODART-GUTEKUNST, BANGERT, EAKINS, FORD-FOARD, SANDEFUR, MELTON, HANDLEY, EZELL, WALCUP, THOMASSON, and DUNCAN families. 3. Norm, That far back the name of the cemetery was probably pretty fluid. As far as I can tell, Maple Ridge was established around 1890 as the Old Cemetery was getting full and folks liked the new cemetery on a hill west of Carmi. I think the Catholic cemetery adjacent to the public cemetery might predate the larger burial ground, but not by much. If you give us the name we can see if the person is listed on any of our cemetery listings. 3. There is a Maple Ridge Cem., listed on the USGS's online GNIS system, in White Co. It is immediately west of Carmi, or on the western edge of town. They do not list a Maple Grove Cem. In fact, they list no feature named Maple Grove anywhere in White Co. Perhaps it was an old cemetery no longer in existence - at least not recorded on GNIS. Or it may have been a mistake in memory or transcription. --- Norman Gidcumb <ngidcumb@bearlake-net.com> wrote: > I have two listings for cemeteries in Carmi, > Maple Ridge and Maple Grove. > Are they one of the same or are there two in > Carmi?
