He was born Nov. 21, 1941 at Burnt Prairie, the son of William A. and Alta (Wilson) Pottorff, and was married to Elva Lou Pottorff, who died Dec. 25, 1999. He was a retired tester for Halliburton. Surviving are two daughters, Jana Pottorff of Newburgh, Ind. and Sandy Wilson of Carmi; a stepdaughter, Kassi Dulaney of Flora; a stepson, Donnie Wilson of Carmi; a sister, Pat White of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Andy Pottorff of Fairfield; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church, with burial in Burnt Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Johnson & Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to Burnt Prairie Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Carmi Times Thu Apr 16, 2009 Springerton, Ill. - Robert P. Carter, 68, Springerton, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at his home. He was born Oct. 18, 1940, at Springerton, the son of Harold and Ruth (Rister) Carter. He was married to Laurel A. Devolve and she survives. Robert had retired from Babcock & Wilcox in Mt. Vernon, Ind., and later worked as a farmhand. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam. He was a 43-year member of the Springerton American Legion and a member of the Carmi V.F.W. He is survived by: three step-sons, Anthony Fox, Texas, Jason LaFlamme, Connecticut, and Christopher LaFlamme, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Mary Jane Myers and Vera Boucherie, both of Springerton; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gerald Carter. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2009, at Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Enfield. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until the time of the service at 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2009, at the funeral home. He was born March 8, 1972, in Joliet, the son of Debra McCoy-Corry and Dennis (Vicki) Baker, who survive. He was a 1991 graduate of Gardner South Wilmington High School and a member of Church of Hope in Gardner. Aaron was a Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed vintage hot rods and fishing with his uncle, Richard Baker. Survivors include: three sisters, Stacy (Tony) Churchwell of Carmi, Heather Miner, Gardner, and Natasha West, Braidwood; one nephew, one niece and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Aaron was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Vernon and Edith McCoy, and paternal grandparents, Charles and Lois Baker. Visitation and a video tribute will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral Friday, April 17, 2009, at Reeves Funeral Home, 203 Liberty St., Gardner. She was born May 17, 1913 in Heralds Prairie Township, the daughter of Henry Orval and Cora Maud (Winfrey) Smith. She married Edmund LaRock Aug. 16, 1934, and he preceded her in death Feb. 25, 1964. She then married Dyke Pool July 3, 1969, and he preceded her in death Dec. 13, 1996. She was a member of Norris City United Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a grocery clerk at the Wonder Market. Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy Anderson of Ft. Myers, Fla.; a son, Louis Henry LaRock of Evansville, Ind.; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ina Vern Stokes; and two brothers, Lester Edward and William Bland "Bill" Smith. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at Campbell Funeral Home in Norris City, the Rev. Terra Sisco officiating. Burial will be in Village Cemetery near Norris City. Carmi Times Thu Apr 09, 2009 Florida - Gayle Kae Schauberger, 66, Valrico, Fla., died Thursday, March 26, 2009 at a hospital in Tampa, Fla. She was born June 10, 1942 in Anderson, Ind., the daughter of Kenneth and Irma Schauberger (who preceded her in death), and formerly lived in Carmi. Those who knew Gayle appreciated her kind and loving spirit. She always looked for a way to encourage, help and comfort others. She nursed many of her family and friends through times of sickness and grief. She brought joy to those around her with a quiet wit and wonderful sense of humor. Gayle is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Amy and Frank Teeter, and Kelli and Fidel Lopez; four grandchildren, Amanda and her husband, Ryan Parrish, Luke and Sabrina Lopez, and Evan Teeter, all of Valrico, Fla.; a brother, John Schauberger of Hendersonville, Tenn.; a sister, Carmen Burzynski of Benton; and several cousins, including Pat Finch Barber of Carmi. A memorial service was held Sunday, March 29 in Valrico.

He was born May 13, 1936 at Geneva, the son of L.B. and Adelia (Bills) Johnson. He married Wava Neilson Nelson, and she preceded him in death. Mr. Johnson had been an inspector in the oilfield. He is survived by four stepdaughters, Devora Boyer of Eatonton, Ga., Donna Miller of Pinckneyville, Brenda Ryan of Cave-in-Rock and Melba Harl of McLeansboro; eight stepgrandchildren and two great-stepgrandchildren; two nephews, David Curry of Carmi and Harry Curry of Florida; and a special friend, Marilyn Tidwell of Carmi. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Al Johnson, Gaylon Nelson and Jerry Nelson; and two sisters, Deloris Kaluza and Alvira Gibson. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at White County Memorial Garden near Carmi. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery. Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.

She married Clarence Irl "Buck" Buchanan June 3, 1949, and he preceded her in death July 15, 1991. She was a secretary at the ASCS Office in Carmi and a member of First Christian Church of Carmi. Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Debbie Buchanan of Henderson, Ky.; a brother and sister-in-law, Colin H. "Bud" and Cindy Shick of Bridgeport; three grandchildren, Dawn Major and husband, Mike, of Fairfield, Nathan Buchanan of Albion, and Jacob Buchanan and wife, Tura, of Fairfield; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael L. Buchanan. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, with Jim Whetstone officiating. He was born Feb. 6, 1920 in Maunie, the son of John Thomas and Thursia Jane Williams Kimbrell. He married Janie Swanz May 12, 1979. He was an equipment operator and had been at one time the street department superintendent for the City of Carmi. Carmi Times Tue Apr 07, 2009 Carmi, Ill. - Longtime Carmi business owner Harold Pollard, 70, Carmi, died Monday, April 6, 2009 at his home. He was born May 21, 1938 in Carmi, the son of Ossie and Emmarene (Chastain) Pollard. He married Glenda Courson on May 24, 1957 at Norris City First Methodist Church. Harold graduated from Carmi Township High School and DeVry Institute of Electronics of Chicago. He was owner and operator of Pollard's Electronic Sales & Service for 25 years. He enjoyed raising and training standardbred race horses and won the 1991 Egyptian Colt Stakes. He enjoyed boating and RV'ing with friends and family. A winning shuffleboard player, he was always in the top three players. He appreciated his customers when he owned the electronics shop. He was a member of the Carmi Elks Club and enjoyed visiting members of the Elks all over the United States. He is survived by his wife, Glenda; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kim Fields of Carmi and Debra and Nick Ambrose of Evansville, Ind.; three granddaughters, Amber Short of Norris City, Kristal Ward of Evansville and Amanda Fromm of Charleston; two great-granddaughters, Abby Buttry and Madison Wheeler; three stepgranddaughters and nine stepgreat-granddaughers. He was preceded in death by his parents; a twin brother, Gerald; and one sister, Marilyn Duncan. Carmi Times Fri Apr 03, 2009 Edwardsville, Ill. - Nancy Ann Deibert, 71, Edwardsville, died at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Edwardsville Nursing & Rehabilitation in that city. She was born Feb. 11, 1938 on the family farm at Enfield, the daughter of Orvill and Nanna (Wicker) Abba, and was a 1956 graduate of Enfield High School. She attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale and McKendree College. In 1961, she moved to Highland, teaching physical education in the public schools and then third grade at St. Paul Catholic School. She was married to Dennie J. Deibert, who died Aug. 1, 1994. Mrs. Deibert founded Teaberries Tea Room, a special tea room for young girls in Highland. She enjoyed traveling, shopping and spending time with friends, her family and granddaughter, Alexa. Surviving are a daughter, Aimi A. (Darin) Hartlieb, and a granddaughter, Alexa A. Hartlieb, all of Edwardsville; a brother, William (Darlene) Abba of Hobart, Ind.; five nieces and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Evelyn Smith; and a brother-in-law, John Smith. A private funeral service was held Friday at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, with interment in Highland City Cemetery.
