Jesse L. Summers was our paster at the Church of God, 306 East Main St., Pulaski, Virginia 24301. He was killled in an auto accident near Dublin [about 5 miles East of Pulaski] on October 13, 1953. In addition to Rev. Summers, a former pastor of the Pulaski Church of God was killed in the same accident. I think his last name was Thomas. Brother Summers was our much-loved pastor, and even though I was only 10 years old, I was greatly affected by his death and will never forget it. Every October 13 I think about that terrible day in 1953. I've been wanting to see if I could find his kids [there were maybe 2 or 3], just to let them know that somebody remembers the wonderful man their father was. Carmi Times Fri Jun 05, 2009 Michigan - Gerald E. Puckett, 72, Grand Blanc, Mich., died May 24, 2009 at his home. He was born Sept. 9, 1936 at Burnt Prairie, the son of the late Walter and Viola (Gwaltney) Puckett, and was a 1954 graduate of Mills-Prairie High School. He had lived most of his life in Michigan and was retired from GM. Among his survivors are his wife, three sons, a daughter, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, six brothers, three sisters, 25 nieces and nephews, and 30 great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral and burial were in Michigan.

Carmi Times Fri Jun 05, 2009 TEXAS - A memorial service and burial for George Kenneth "Kenny" Stahl will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at White County Memorial Garden near Carmi, the Rev. Terra Sisco officiating. Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Stahl, 82, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006 at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, Texas. He was born July 22, 1924 in Mill Shoals Township, the son of Henry and Nell (Buttry) Stahl. He attended Cross Roads Grade School (100 yards from his home), attended three years of high school at Springerton and finished his senior year at Enfield High School. Mr. Stahl served with the Marine Corps in the South Pacific and China during World War II. After his discharge, he worked in the oil industry, first as a tool dresser for V.T. Drilling Co. of Evansville, Ind., then as a driller, and as a tool pusher for a short time. He finished his career with Baker Tools, retiring in 1988 as an area manager. He was of the Presbyterian faith. Mr. Stahl was married July 1, 1952 to Frances Weiss, and she died Feb. 2, 1992. He was married Oct. 9, 2001 to Opal (Rice) Sinatra, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and David Burns of Texas; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Harold and Margaret Stahl of Carmi, Merle and Peggy Stahl of Denver, Colo., and Wendell Stahl of Denver; a sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Jim Funnell of Albuquerque, N.M.; three grandchildren, Gwen Walraven, Erin Barnes and Eric Walraven; two great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Addison; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donald; and his first wife, Frances. Mr. Stahl's body was donated to science.

It only has 17 men, but they are all named (no Harts). I don't know what newspaper the picture came from, and all I have is a xerox copy. Because it's a copy of a copy of a copy, the men are, at best, hard to distinguish. They definitely aren't recognizable. There are a few impressive beards, though! Carmi Times Wed Jun 03, 2009 New Albany, Ind. - Norma Lee Mullen, 80, New Albany, Ind., formerly of Carmi, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany. She was born June 16, 1928 in Flint, Mich., the daughter of John Herman and Flossie Ann (Blake) McKenzie. She married Jerry Joseph Mullen in September 1966, and he preceded her in death in 1977. Mrs. Mullen was a member of New Beginning Church of God in Carmi and the Red Hat Society. She was a noon supervisor at Jefferson Attendance Center in Carmi. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon (Spencer) and Ron Brown of Tunnel Hill, and Joey Leigh and David Kelso of Jeffersonville, Ind.; four grandchildren, Kristin Brown Francis, Noah James Kelso, Jonah Gregory Kelso and Elijah Joseph Kelso; and two great-grandchildren, Veronica Noel Francis and Isabella Faith Francis. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jody Lynn Mullen; three sisters, Dorothy Thornton, Bonnie Crawford and Patty Willard; a granddaughter, Sharon Leigh Brown; and a great-granddaughter, Stefanie Elaine Francis. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, the Rev. Roy Boothe officiating. Friends may call after noon Sunday until the service time at the funeral home.

Carmi Times Wed Jun 03, 2009 Carmi, Ill. - Jean York, 89, Carmi, passed away at 10:12 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born Sept. 25, 1919 in Crawford County, the daughter of Leonard D. and Flora E. (Espy) Apple. She married Doyle Fredrick York April 5, 1942, and he preceded her in death May 28, 2001. Mrs. York was a homemaker and member of First United Methodist Church in Carmi. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Marilou and Mark Hamill of Malibu, Calif.; three grandchildren, Nathan, Griffin and Chelsea Hamill; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Elizabeth Barbre of Carmi, and Aleta and P.D. Ritchey of Evansville, Ind.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Carleton and Amy Apple of Enfield, and Max and Wanda Apple of Harrisburg; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Beck of Carmi. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lola Aker. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church of Carmi. He married Virginia Hilliard on Saturday, June 14, 1947, and she preceded him in death on Wednesday, May 1, 2002. Les was a retired coal miner. He was a member of Dorrisville Baptist Church, the Harrisburg Lions Club and the Harrisburg Fraternal Order of Odd Fellows. Carmi Times Tue Jun 02, 2009 LOUISIANA - William Ray "Cuz" Daugherty, 66, Zwolle, La., formerly of Carmi, died May 3 as the result of a storm. Mr. Daugherty was found dead May 15 in his pickup in his driveway. A huge tree had fallen across the truck during a May 3 storm that brought torrential rains, high winds and tornado sightings. He was born July 7, 1942 in Illinois but moved to Louisiana in 1961. He worked in the oil industry as a commercial diver and was the owner of Underwater Completion Team, Inc. and Bethsadia, House of Fishing. Survivors include his mother, Margaret Chatmon Daugherty of Carmi; three daughters, Becky, Starla and Beverly; a son, James C. Daugherty; a brother and sister-in-law, Jimmie and Donna Daugherty; a sister and brother-in-law, Roxanna and Terry Juenger of Carmi; an uncle and his wife, J.C. and Emma Daugherty; nine grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, James William Daugherty; his grandparents; and one grandson. A funeral liturgy was held May 19 at Warren Meadows Funeral Home in Many, La., with interment at Aimwell Cemetery in Many. Carmi Times Mon Jun 01, 2009| Santee, Calif. - James "Toddy" Gidcumb, 81, Santee, Calif., died Sunday, May 17, 2009 at his home. He was born May 24, 1927 in White County. He lived in Carmi and graduated from Carmi Township High School. Mr. Gidcumb spent four years in the U.S. Navy as a yeoman first class in Hawaii, and he later graduated from Southern Illinois University and went on to pursue a career with GMAC for 38 years. During this time he lived in several cities across the U.S. before retiring in Santee 20 years ago. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Shirley Shaver Gidcumb, also of Carmi. He leaves behind two daughters, Debbie and Suzan of San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren, of New York, N.Y.; a sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Houston Hughes of Carmi; and nieces, nephews and several cousins. There will be a memorial service Aug. 10, with full military honors, at Fort Rosecrans Cemetery in Santee. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. charge of arrangements.

Carmi Times Mon Jun 01, 2009 Tennessee - Floyd D. Gates, 77, of the Anderson community near Monterey, Tenn., and formerly of Carmi, died Sunday, May 31, 2009 at the Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville, Tenn. He was born June 18, 1931 in Carmi, the son of the late Henry and Josephine (Rhein) Gates. Mr. Gates enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and retired in 1975 with the rank of lieutenant commander. He served on the USS Hornet and USS Orinsky, along with many other aircraft carriers. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steven and Marilyn Gates of North Carolina, and Dale Gates of Monterey, Tenn.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a special nephew and wife, Richard and Janice Gates of Carmi. He was preceded in death on April 28, 2008 by his wife, Betty Gates, and by three brothers and two sisters. The family chose cremation, and no services are planned at the time. Arrangements were made by Goff Funeral Home of Monterey, Tenn.

OLNEY, Ill. - Lois Elouise Weidner, 69, died at 2:10 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2009, at her residences. She was born in Grayville, Ill., in June 7, 1939, the daughter of Murel and Katherine (Compton) Moore. She married Daniel Curtis Weidner on August 10, 1964, and he died March 29, 2005. She was a homemaker and receptionist for Dr. Brown. She was a member of the Olney Free Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Kim Kuhl and her husband, Doug, of Olney, Ill.; a son, Christopher Weidner and his wife, Kathy of Olney; a brother, Kenneth Moore of Oakland City, Ind.; grandchildren, Jade and Nick Kuhl and Tice and Tristen Weidner; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and two aunts. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother, Ronnie. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Olney Free Methodist Church, Pastor Steve Wingert will officiate, burial will be in Haven Hill Cemetery in Olney.
