Carmi Times Fri Jul 24, 2009 Norris City, Ill. Freda Mobley, 90, Norris City, passed away at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Galatia. She was born Aug. 10, 1918 in Norris City, the daughter of Milo and Emma Alma (Pearce) Newcomb, and was married June 1, 1940 to Albert Patterson, who preceded her in death May 19, 1965. She then married Gale Mobley on June 16, 1966, and he preceded her in death April 30, 1980. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Carmi. Surviving are a stepson and daughter-in-law, Dr. Robert Alan and Suzanna Mobley of Conroe, Texas; two granddaughters, Julia Taylor and Tracy Roe; two grandsons, Sean Mobley and David Mobley; and four great-grandchildren, all of Conroe, Texas; two sisters, Elsie Greer of Sullivan, Mo., and Reba Mitchell-Howard of Thompsonville; two sisters-in-law, Mary Newcomb of Evansville, Ind., and Mary Ann and Dwight Mobley of Mt. Carmel; seven nephews and five nieces. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Everett, Wilburn, Glenard and Herschel Newcomb. Arrangements are pending at Campbell Funeral Home.

A Charter Member of the White County Association of Home and Community Education, she was a former employee of the White County Supervisor of Assessments Office. Survivors include three sons, Jim Taylor of Burnt Prairie, Merle Taylor of Hammond, IL and Mike Taylor of Enfield; a brother, Phillip G. Porter of Louisville, KY; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services for Micah Jo Taylor will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 17, at the Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi with burial in the White County Memorial Garden in Carmi. Visitation will be from 5 - 8 Thursday evening, July 16, at the Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the St. Mary's Hospital Foundation and will be accepted at the Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.
Carmi Times Thu Jul 23, 2009 Carmi, Ill. - Floyd Taylor, 93, Carmi, passed away at 8:43 p.m. Thursday, July 16, 2009 at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. He was born Aug. 9, 1915 in Carmi, the son of Robert Stewart and Martha Ellen (Aud) Taylor, and was married March 26, 1937 to Esther Julia Seitz, who preceded him in death Oct. 25, 2006. Mr. Taylor was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Carmi and a transport driver for MAPCO transportation for 29 years. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, John R. and Claire Taylor of Severn, Md.; two grandchildren, Cynthia M. Canner and John R. Taylor II; five great-grandchildren, Robert T., Christina M., Catherine M., Camilla M. and Claire M. Canner; two nieces, Judy Peyton and Glenda Taylor; and two nephews, Ed Hall and Doug Devore. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther; a brother, Glenard David Taylor; a sister, Mary Ellen Hall; and two nieces, Martha Lou Vincent and Alta Mae Cooper. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2009 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, the Rev. Steve Friese and the Rev. Dr. Harrison L. Peyton officiating. Carmi Times Tue Jul 21, 2009 Carmi, Ill. - Mary Jane Chapman, 75, Carmi, passed away at 11:22 a.m. Monday, July 20, 2009 at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. She was born March 6, 1934 in Carmi, the daughter of Robert and Pauline (Vaupel) Hutchinson. She married Glenn Laverne "Curley" Chapman May 12, 1951, and he preceded her in death April 2, 1984. She was a farm wife, homemaker and Methodist by faith. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Thomas Deering of Evansville, Ind; a son, Steve Chapman of Carmi; four brothers and a sister-in-law, Richard Hutchinson, Donnie Hutchinson, and Roger and Lois Hutchinson, all of Carmi, and Herman Hutchinson of Harrisburg; three grandchildren, Monica and Tonya Chapman, and Julia Deering; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by a son, Tony Chapman; and two sisters, Becky Vandewater and Rowena Jones. Graveside funeral and burial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi, with Paul Fishback officiating. Memorial gifts may be given in Mary Jane Chapman's name to the American Cancer Society. Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi is in charge of arrangements.
Carmi Times Tue Jul 21, 2009 Carmi, Ill. - Lloyd E. Duvall, 74, Carmi, passed away at 10:17 p.m. Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital in Fairfield. He was born April 27, 1935 in Sadler, Ky., the son of Joseph Jackson and Sarah Jane (McStoots) Duvall. He married Patricia Ann Burress Feb. 3, 1982. Mr. Duvall worked at O'Daniel Trucking for 32 years and was a Kentucky Colonel. He attended First Christian Church in Carmi and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite. Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Pat Duvall of Carmi; two daughters and sons-in-law, Amy and Carmon Chitwood of Carmi, and Rosa and Keith Moran of Brandenburg, Ky.; a son, Lloyd Edward Duvall of Louisville Ky.; a brother, Donald Duvall of Olney; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Evelyn Gonzalez, Mary Duvall and Martha Kandle; and eight brothers, Everett, Willie, Mitchell, Roger, Joby, Bob, Shirley and Latney Earl Duvall. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, Steve McClure officiating. Burial will be in North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi. Friends may call from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be conducted by the Carmi Masonic Lodge at 7:30 p.m.
Carmi Times Tue Jul 21, 2009 Carmi, Ill. - Beverly Arden Weiland, 75, Carmi, died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 18, 2009, with her daughter and daughter's friend at her bedside. She was born May 4, 1934, in Hardin County, Ky., the only child of John and Marie (Lowrey) Vaughn. She was married to G.W. Weiland on June 23, 1956, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 2007. She graduated with honors in 1951 from Cave-in-Rock High School in Cave in Rock. In 1955, she graduated with honors from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, with bachelor's degrees in English and interior design. She was an active member in Alcoholics Anonymous and was an avid lover of animals and an animal rights advocate. Her hobbies included cakes, cooking and needlework. Her cakes were very popular at church functions and various social affairs. Survivors include a son, Gerald W. Weiland of Evansville, Ind.; a daughter Sharon "Sherry" Jonn Weiland of Carmi; and seven grandchildren, Philip, Christopher, Katie, Kiersten, Grace, Jared and Michael. Preceding her in death are her parents, John and Marie Vaughn; former husband and best friend, G.W. Weiland; and granddaughter, Kearis Lauren. Visitation and funeral service will be Wednesday at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Visitation is at noon and continues until the funeral service at 2 p.m., followed by a private burial for immediate family. Memorials of the donor's choice may be made and will be accepted at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi.
Carmi Times Mon Jul 20, 2009 Carmi, IL Elva Pearl Eck, 101, Carmi, died Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. She was born Jan. 11, 1908, in Georgetown, Ill., the daughter of Willard and Hattie (Howard) Pribble. She married Clarence O. Eck on April 12, 1924, and he preceded her in death in July 1975. Elva and Clarence were owners for many years of the Ecko Motel in Enfield. She was a homemaker, avid quilter, and enjoyed playing bingo and visiting the White County Senior Citizens Center in Carmi. Survivors include two sons, Willard Eck of Grayville, and Clarence O. Eck and his wife, Dorothy, of Luther, Mich.; four daughters, Doris I. Ross, Barbara A. Shields, Virginia V. Connolly and Janet C. Baxley and her husband, Gary, all of Carmi; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Eck of Berkeley, Mich.; 24 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence O. Eck; and a son, Robert L. Eck. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Funeral is at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel in Carmi. Burial will be in Enfield Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the White County Senior Citizens Center and will be accepted at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi.
VALIER - Violet A. Bulla, 83, died Sunday, July 19, 2009, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. There will be no services. Mrs. Bulla's wish was to be cremated. Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Bulla was a beautician all her life. She was born April 17, 1926, in Carmi to Charles Alva and Tommie Mae (Duckworth) Sigler. She was previously married to Nick Bulla; he preceded her in death. Carmi Times Fri Jul 17, 2009 Carmi, Ill. - Jerry Hart, a longtime and beloved citizen of Carmi, passed away at his home, Wednesday, July 15, 2009. He was born March 14, 1936 in Chicago, the son of Sam B. and Leah Bell (Baker) Hart. He married Deanna Mecum on Dec. 3, 1959 at Shawneetown, and she survives. Jerry started his career as manager of the business his father started in 1929 and ended his career in death as the owner-operator of Hart Shoes in Carmi. He attended grade school in Carmi and graduated from high school at Western Military Academy in Alton. He served with the U.S. Army Reserves at Fort Leonard Wood. Jerry was a member of the Carmi Kiwanis Club for nearly 50 years. He accomplished many goals as a result of that membership. In 1966 he won the District Inter-Club award by prodding each member to attend one inter-club meeting; the goal was met and Jerry accumulated over 1,600 miles on his car! He also served all chairs of office, serving as president in 1968. Jerry was active in Corn Day activities and was the concession chairman for 35 years. The store sponsored a Relay For Life team for five years and he participated since its conception in 1999. Jerry and Deanna were avid runners in the '70s and '80s and in later years walked many miles together. He was a strong supporter of Pets at Risk in Carmi. His two greatest passions in life were the St. Louis Cardinals and photography. Jerry attended Temple in Benton. He is survived by his wife, Deanna; one son, Aaron Hart of Louisville, Ky.; one daughter, Annie Eisenback of Louisville, Ky.; and two sisters, June Fredman of San Antonio, Texas and Sharon Roeder of Prescott, Ariz. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and several cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2009 at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi, with burial in North Maple Ridge Cemetery. She was born June 1, 1918 in Maunie, the daughter of A.C. and Eppsia Jane (Wade) Allison. She was married July 21, 1934 to John Wesley Blazier, and he preceded her in death Jan. 14, 2000. She attended Marshall Ferry General Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, LaDonna and David Pelham of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Brenda and Jerry Forcht of Cypress; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Susan Blazier of Jacksonville, Fla., and Keith and Jan Blazier of Willisville; ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Muriel and Carl Allison, and Manford Perry; and a great-grandchild.
