She was born Oct. 14, 1929 in Norris City, the daughter of Grant and Mary (McGill) Knight. She married Charles E. Greer in November 1948. She was retired from the San Antonio school system and was a member of the choir and Sunday school teacher of Hilano Baptist Temple in San Antonio. Surviving are her husband, Charles E. Greer of San Antonio; a daughter, Virginia Lynn and Woody Smith of Weston, Fla.; two granddaughters, Ashlee and Alison Smith; a sister, Emily D. Blackard of Troy, Ill.; s nephew, Don Blackard of Collinsville, Ill.; two nieces, Cheryl Sears of Troy and Sandra Roe of Collinsville; and many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grant and Mary (McGill) Knight; and sisters, Evelyn Knight and Frances Henson.

    3. Carmi Times Wed Dec 09, 2009 Grayville, Ill. - Jack Shields passed unexpectedly of a massive heart attack Dec. 7, 2009. He was 41. He is survived by his sons, Brandon and Dalton of Sterling Heights, Mich.; his mother, Barbara Shields of Carmi; three brothers, Michael of Harrison Township, Mich., Dennis of Bone Gap and Dale of Cottondale, Fla.; four nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by one nephew. Jack was a resident of Grayville for many years before moving to Michigan. There will be a memorial service at a later date, as the body will be cremated and returned to Carmi.

Marty is survived by his four children, Wally (Barbara) Childress of Carmi, Gary (Debbie) Childress of Longmont, Colo., Connie (Ron) Leonard of Gunnison, Colo., and Martin Childress of Salt Lake City, Utah; six grandchildren, Mark (Lori) Childress of Mundelein, Marla (Steve) Webb of Newburgh, Ind., Kyla and Ryan Leonard of Gunnison, Colo., and Ben and Amy Childress of Salt Lake City, Utah; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Childress was preceded in death by his wife, June Marie Childress. Viegut Funeral Home in Loveland, Colo. was in charge of arrangements. The family has requested that memorial gifts be made in Marty's name to any veterans' organization or that one send a care package to a soldier currently serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.

He was born Sept. 15, 1937 in Perry County, Ind., the son of Benjamin and Ruby Louise (Kincaid) Bolin. He married Melba Lou Browning June 3, 1957. Mr. Bolin was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Norris City. He was a retired U.S. Air Force technical sergeant, was village superintendent at Norris City and a police officer in Norris City. He was a member of American Legion Post 109. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Melba Bolin of Norris City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Regina and Brett Edwards, and Shannon and Harold Delap, all of Norris City; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Jana Bolin of Enfield, Jeff and Jenny Bolin of Cleveland, Okla., and Joe and Angie Bolin of Carmi; two sisters and a brother-in-law, June and Linus Linne, and Opal McCarthy, all of Tell City, Ind.; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Campbell Funeral Home in Norris City, the Rev. Dennis Reed officiating. Burial will be in Union Ridge Cemetery near New Haven, where the combined units of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will perform military rites. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

    3. Carmi Times Mon Dec 07, 2009 TROY, IL Charles G. Sullivan, 68, Troy, Ill., and formerly of Crossville, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at the St. Louis VA Medical Center after complications developed from a cancer surgery. Charles was born in Crossville July 27, 1941, to J.D. and Mamie Sullivan. They preceded him in death. Charles was a Crossville Community High School graduate and served from 1959-1963 in the U.S. Marine Corps. He had owned his own plumbing business in Carmi before leaving the area to work as a pipe fitter at shipyards in Louisiana and at Norfolk, Va. Among his survivors are three sisters, Maranna Fritz of Sturgis, Ky., Mary Linda Wheeler of New Haven and Jane Risley of Massachusetts; two sons, Jerry (Robin) Sullivan of Eddyville, Ky., and Brad (Rosemary) Sullivan of Troy; and two daughters, Beth Sullivan of Crossville and Jennifer Queen of Silver Spring, Md. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Tommy. The body has been cremated. A graveside service is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, with internment of the ashes to follow at Stokes Chapel Cemetery near Crossville.

She was born Sept. 15, 1923 in Emma, the daughter of George Dallas and Lora (Questell) York. She was a graduate of Carmi Township High School. She married Harold John Shaw, and he preceded her in death in 1975. Mrs. Shaw was a manager of commercial and residential properties for 50 years in Evansville, Newburgh, Louisville, Bowling Green and Henderson, Ky., retiring in 2007. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack Y. and Lori Bowen of Eldorado, and G. Robert and Maudell Bowen of Newburgh, Ind.; five grandchildren, Jackie L. and wife Vickie Bowen, and Robby and wife Jenny Bowen, all of Bowling Green, Ky., Todd and wife Andria Bowen of Nicosia, Cyprus, and Nathan and Logan Bowen of Eldorado; and three great-grandchildren, Brandon Bowen, Bailey Lynn and George Dallas Bowen, all of Bowling Green, Ky. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Kathleen Woolsey, and a brother, Dallas Lavel York. Memorial gifts may be given in Rosalyn Y. She was born Feb. 16, 1950 at Mt. Carmel, the daughter of Warren "Doc" and Melba (Church) Masterson, and was married to John Riley, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Riley worked for over 20 years for United Technologies Automotive in Zanesville, Ohio. She enjoyed crafts, dancing, painting and crocheting. She was a member of the VFW post and American Legion Auxiliary in Zanesville. Surviving are a son, Edward Keith Brown of Maunie; a daughter, SuAnne (Christopher) Sexton of Carmi; five grandchildren, Keith Brown, Brandon Newman, Sasha Newman, Cory Newman and Jimmy Sexton; and three sisters, Carolyn Miller and Joann Preston, both of Carmi, and Debbie Ladley of Poseyville, Ind. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; her grandparents, Fred and Janie Masterson, and Gilbert and Nellie Church (Humphrey); and one stepson, Robert Patrick Riley. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro, the Rev. Mike Buckman officiating. Burial will follow in White County Memorial Garden west of Carmi. Mr. Raney was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of Ditney Ridge Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Marie Raney of Norris City; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Randy Demarest of Norris City; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gerald and Ginger Raney of Norris City, and Edward Raney of New Haven; a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Rose Raney of Bloomfield, N.M.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was born April 16, 1917 in Platteville, Wis., the daughter of Leo Ray and Nora (Schneider) Thorne. She married Ralph Ezra Garlick June 5, 1937, and he preceded her in death Aug. 4, 1984. She was a cook and did housecleaning. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Ann Allen of Norris City; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Ronald A. and Alberta Garlick, Ernest O. Garlick, Gerald Ray and Dana Garlick, and Larry D. Garlick, all of Norris City; a sister-in-law, Rosie Garlick of Clarksville, Va.; eight grandchildren, several stepgrandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. She was born March 6, 1916 in Carmi, first child of Fred and Inez Curtis Deppenmeier, and married Edward Conrad on Dec. 19, 1936, in Albion. Emma worked for Oakfield Enterprise for 25 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of Oakfield United Methodist Church, where she was a communion steward for several years. She was also a member of the Oakfield UMC Ladies Fellowship. Emma enjoyed playing Scrabble with her sisters and friends, doing word search puzzles and, most of all, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by three sons and one daughter, Bill (Sue), Mike (Linda), Larry and Norma (Daniel) Betz, all of Fond du Lac, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Beatrice Hurt of Lathrop, Mo., and Frieda Cutchin and Wanda Niekamp, both of Carmi; many nieces, nephews and other relatives; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Norma Barber, Henderson, Ky.; and four brothers-in-law, Boyd Barber, Frank Hurt, Leroy Cutchin and Robert Niekamp. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Friday at Oakfield United Methodist Church, 220 Main St. in Oakfield. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Oakfield United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Droste will officiate. Burial will be in Avoca Cemetery. He retired from Airtex in 1999 after 35 years. He was also a foreman, and he was a member of Burnt Prairie Masonic Lodge 668. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy, of Mill Shoals; one son, Neil of Aden; one daughter, Nancy Etheridge of Fairfield; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
