Hi all, Yesterday I got this email from Larry D. spence: > Do you know of any Spences in White County who are interested in the Spence family tree? I would like to make contact with locals to compare notes and share information. > > > > All inquiries are welcome. > > > > Thanks > > > > Larry D. Spence The late Carl Shelton's database has this family back to 1795, including at least one Spence family living in Carmi today. They are related to the Hoskins family, and descend from a Bryant branch, one of Carl's main lines. However, when I tried to mail Larry back at [email protected] I got one of those "we have to check you out" emails from earthlink, so I think it is unlikely I will hear back from him, as he may not understand the verification process. I responded to the intercept email but did express some displeasure, as it is a common problem for genealogy moderators. Since you are on this list, you probably understand more about email, but if you know Larry ask him to change his settings. Larry is not on the White County list. BTW, if you expect to get any responses from ancestry/rootsweb queries you need to set your ancestry account to allow free access to your email addy, rather than going through ancestry's messaging service or whatever they call it. It is ancestry's attempt at becoming a social networking site. Cindy

Many of his descendants make up some of the oldest families in Edwards and White County, IL. His daughter, Elizabeth ca 1782 who married John "Jack" Spencer would not arrive with her family until 1831. Peter and his wife, Margaret, would settle first at French Creek Prairie near Grayville. I have forgotten where he enlisted but would think it would have been in Indiana. I would guess by the photo that he was perhaps between 70 - 80 in the photo which would make the date of the photo between 1914 and 1924. Maybe others of you are better at guessing the ages of these men than I. I think the old dress and beards or mustaches sometimes age the individual in our eyes...and I do think they lived harder lives than most of us do today. For family members still living in White County, James Alexander Miller was the grandfather of Grace Hodge Spencer, E. Wave Jamerson, Nauvard Jamerson Bolyard (sp), Elizabeth "Betty" Jamerson Savage Huffer, and A. Edward Artin, Victor "Babe" Artin and Harold Artin...all of Mill Shoals or Enfield Twp. His wife and the mother of his children was Mary Elizabeth Jackson of Perry County, Indiana and his second wife who he married shortly before his death was a Justice (that may or may not have been a married surname). I believe she was the grandmother or great grandmother of Carl Justice. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
