Carmi Times Tue Mar 02, 2010 Carmi, Ill. - William Weedman, 77, of Carmi, passed away Monday, March 1, 2010, at the Jefferson Barracks VA Hospital in Missouri. He was born Sept. 19, 1932 in Maunie, the son of Samuel George and Jessie Mae (Erwin) Weedman. William was a member of both the American Legion and VFW. He was a member of the Eastside Pentecostal Church. William was a avid Cardinal fan. He is survived by four sisters, Gertie Rhein of Carmi, Genevieve Raley of Henderson, Ky., and Clara Weedman and Linda Brock, both of Chicago. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lloyd George and Bobby Eugene. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Stendeback Family Funeral Home/Kittinger-Fair in Carmi. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service in the funeral home chapel. Military burial rites will be provided by the American Legion and VFW posts of Carmi. Burial will be in Kuykendall Cemetery near Carmi. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Jefferson Barracks Hospice Unit, and memorial envelopes will be provided at the funeral home. Carmi Times Mon Mar 01, 2010 Carmi, Ill. - Helen L. Whitsitt, 89, of Carmi, passed away at 7:24 a.m. Monday, March 1, 2010 at Phoenix Rehab and Nursing Center in Carmi. She was born April 19, 1920. She married Chester Vertis Whitsitt June 7, 1941, and he preceded her in death April 22, 2002. She was a homemaker and a member of Carmi First Pentecostal Church. Surviving are a sister, F. Frances Doneghue of Chaffee, Mo.; a brother, Leland Crocker of Norris City; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Phyllis Jean Whitsitt; a son, Kelly Whitsitt; a sister, Pearl Crocker; and four brothers, Edward, Walter, Julius and Mack Crocker. Graveside funeral and burial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at North Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi, with the Rev. Bob Pollard officiating. (Joseph) Kruer, 84, Floyds Knob, Ind. and formerly of Norris City, died peacefully Jan. 31, 2010 in Fairfield, Texas, with her children by her side. The daughter of the late Cecil and Coleta (Holland) Joseph, Reva was born April 6, 1925 in Norris City. She was the widow of Marvin L. Kruer. Reva was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II, and was a member of VFW Hobart Beach Post 3281 in New Albany, Ind. She was retired from Container Corp. in Jeffersonville, Ind., and was a member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church, Kentuckiana Hearing Loss Association and a volunteer at Floyd Memorial Hospital in New Albany. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Stacie A. and Donald Boyd of Fairfield, Texas; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen L. and Vicki Kruer of Floyds Knob, Ind.; grandchildren, Traci Kruer, Amy Kruer Scorsolini (Scott), Jon Barnett, Elton Boyd and Kenneth Boyd; and five great-grandchildren, Derek and Drew Scorsolini, Bethany Barnett, and Nevan and Murphy Boyd. Burial was in St. Mary's of the Knobs Church Cemetery.
Betty J. Hequembourg, 85, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois passed away at 4:37 P.M. on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at her residence in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. She was born on December 3, 1924 in Tamaroa, Illinois the daughter of the late Charles Willis and Marietta Marlow. She married John H. Hequembourg on June 8, 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri and he preceded her in death on May 31, 1968. Surviving family members include her 2 Brothers: Joe Willis of Carmi, Illinois and Jack Willis and wife Carol of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; Several Nieces and Nephews also survive. Her parents, husband, and one brother: Charles Willis preceded her in death. Betty retired from the accounting department at Missouri Pacific Railroad and was a member of the American Legion Post #141 Auxiliary and AMVETS Post #4 Auxiliary, Ladies of the Moose Lodge #755, Mt. Carmi Times Thu Feb 25, 2010 Mill Shoals, Ill. - Lou Eva Stewart, 89, Mill Shoals, died at 12:59 p.m. Wednesday, Fe. 24, 2010 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. She was born Sept. 25, 1920 at Burnt Prairie, the daughter of Silas and Hattie (Phillips) Carter, and was married Oct. 19, 1936 to John Charles Vaught, who died Feb. 5, 1960. She was married in January 1980 to Noel Stewart, who died in December 1980. Mrs. Stewart worked as a young woman at an International Shoe Co. factory and later for the Rex Filter Co. in Barnhill. She was the oldest living member of Liberty Baptist Church at Burnt Prairie and was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star (and a past worthy matron). Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Gene Eblen of Mill Shoals; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Gary Tracy of White House, Tenn.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Idalene Carter of Fairfield, Jim and Kay Carter of Evansville, Ind., and Bill and Charlene Carter of Mill Shoals; 11 grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild. Carmi Times Sat Feb 20, 2010 Carmi, Ill. - Rosalie Blackard, 85, Carmi, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at Phoenix Rehabilitation and Nursing Care in Carmi. She was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Omaha, the daughter of Lawrence C. and Gladys (Miner) Blackard. She was a retired secretary for Monsanto Corp. in St. Louis, Mo., where she also owned and operated a sewing and alteration business called "Fit 'Em All." She was a member of First Christian Church in Carmi and served as a hospice volunteer and a literacy volunteer through Southeastern Illinois College. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Ruth Blackard of Marion, Ind.; and cousins, Claude Miner and his wife, Marthan, and Barbara Lack and her husband, Glen, all of Carmi, and Maude Bunting and her husband, Wayne, of Albion. Preceding her in death are her parents, Lawrence and Gladys Blackard; a brother, Dean Blackard; and a nephew, Ronald Blackard. Visitation and funeral service are Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Grayville, Ill. - Hortense T. Jones, 65, formerly of White County, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at her home in Evansville, Ind. She was born in San Antonio, Texas, on March 31, 1944. She was a registered nurse and member of St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Evansville, and was active in the Little Sisters of the Poor. Survivors include her husband, Luther Jones of Evansville; a son, Matthew Hawkins, and his wife, Selena, of Mt. Carmel; three grandchildren, Joshua M. Hawkins, Crystal Rickards and Selena E.M. Hawkins; and a great-grandson, Brandon Mudd. She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother. Visitation and funeral service will be Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Grayville. Visitation is at 10 a.m. and continues until funeral time at noon. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Grayville.
Carmi Times Fri Feb 19, 2010 _____ Carmi, Ill. - Carl Edward Sturgal, 74, Carmi, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family after an extended illness. Carl was born on Oct. 18, 1935 in Mt. Vernon, Ind. to the late Earl F. Sturgal and Vivian (Carr) Sturgal. He was a Korean War veteran of the Navy. Carl married Judy Ledbetter on June 15, 1982, and she survives. Carl ran the Lantern Tavern in Carmi for years, and later was a self-employed plumber until he retired. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion in Carmi. He had also been a member of the VFW and Elks. Carl was a good husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be greatly missed by the community. Carl is survived by his wife Judy (Ledbetter) Sturgal of Carmi; four sons, Eddie Sturgal of Texas and Jeff (Jane) Sturgal, Carl Ray (Renea) Sturgal and Gregory (Sherry) Sturgal, all of Carmi; two daughters, Vonda Fern (Mike) Champion and Carla (Terry) Rush, both of Springerton; three brothers, Raymond (Ann) Sturgal and Bill (Darlene) Sturgal, both of Arizona, and Don (Sharon) Sturgal of Carmi; one sister, Marilyn (Kenny) Staley of Mascoutah; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a great grandson. Per Carl's request, his body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at later date. Mr. Schauberger worked at Wal-Mart for 21 years. He attended McHenry United Methodist Church. He had been a member of the American Legion. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Gladys Schauberger of Henderson, Ky.; a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Ann and Tom Burris of Evansville, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Warrner of Evansville, Ind.; three stepsons, Steve and Mike Warrner of Gaylord, Mich., and Scott Warrner of Springfield; four grandchildren, Halie, David, Eric and Ian; 12 stepgrandchildren; and 13 stepgreat-grandchildren. He was born Jan. 20, 1945 at Springerton, the son of James C. and Wanda (Powell) Balsover Sr. He married Linda Brown, and she survives. Jim worked for eight years at the coal mine in McLeansboro and 27 years at Airtex in Fairfield, retiring in 2007. He was a Vietnam veteran of the United States Army. Jim is survived by his wife, Linda; one son, James Lee "Bub" Balsover of Springerton; three daughters and their spouses, Christina and Darrin Atteberry of Mt. He was the husband of Linda (Quisenberry) Graddy, who survives. They were married Sept. 3, 1953. Robert was born in Springerton on Sept. 8, 1929, the son of the late Raymond and Bess (Hoover) Graddy.__He attended Eldorado Church of God of Eldorado. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant in the Korean War. He worked as a truck driver prior to retirement. Carmi Times Sun Feb 14, 2010 Carmi, Ill. - Dorothy Jo (Belva) Logan was born June 22, 1923 in Carmi, Ill. She was born in the Stewart Crebs house, which is now Campbell Funeral Home. Her parents were Victor Edward and Emma (Smith) Belva. Jo was the youngest of three sisters, Louise, and Bernice and a brother who died in infancy. She attended Carmi Grade and High Schools and graduated with the Class of 1941. Jo worked for a year for the Illinois Commercial Telephone Co. and on June 26, 1942 was married to her high school sweetheart, William R. "Bill" Logan, who preceded her in death. Bill and Jo were married in the living room of their new home located at 602 Elm St. They both lived together at this address until their admission to Wabash Christian Retirement Center in 2008. Bill was drafted for service in World War II in 1942 but was rejected due to active tuberculosis which had killed his father, Larry, a veteran of World War I. Both he and Jo began working at Chrysler Corp. in the same year and made military armaments for the war effort, including .45 caliber and .30 caliber M-1 carbine bullets. In 1945 they had their first child, Mark, and then Kent was born in 1951. Jo was very active in both of her sons' school activities. She was a member of First Baptist Church and had an active part in the Martha Sunday School class, the Erica Morres Missionary Circle and was a W.O.M. Officer. Jo helped one morning each week at local schools with first grade reading and other classroom activities. Jo was an avid golfer, and she and Bill were charter members of the Carmi Country Club, joining in 1951. She was also a member of the Illinois Farm Bureau, American Legion and VFW auxiliary, a Kentucky Colonel and preceptor of the Beta Sigma Phi. Jo was an avid reader and a strong and lifelong supporter of the Carmi Public Library. Jo is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Martha Logan of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Kent and Linda Logan of Shelbyville, Ky. She has one granddaughter, Holly Belva (Logan) Henry of Oak Ridge, Tenn. Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. He was born Dec. 27, 1923 in Wayne County, the son of Joseph A. and Emma Dora (Steffens) Moats. He married Marilyn Joyce Boehringer on Oct. 11, 1953, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 4, 2007. Guy worked for 28 years for Arnold Vaughan. He was a member of Carmi Church of the Nazarene. He is survived by four nieces, Joselene Smith, Mava Moats, Mary Moats and Dora Schnell; a nephew, Tex Moats; and a sister-in-law, Genevieve Moats, all of whom live in Fairfield. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Rex Oliver Moats and Charlie Franklin Moats. She was born June 25, 1924, in Maunie, the daughter of William and Iona (Emery) Hutchison. She married John E. Bratton on April 21, 1946 in Carmi, and he preceded her in death May 25, 1997. She worked alongside of her husband at their business, Bratton's Toggery, for 40 years. She was a member of First Christian Church in Carmi. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Trudy and Dennis Jacobs of Carmi; a grandson, John Alex Jacobs of Carmi; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Morris Ray and Debbie Hutchison of Carmi, Doyle and Lorene Hutchison of Cedar Hill, Mo., and Marian West of Norris City, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William Hutchison. She was born Nov. 9, 1950, the daughter of Ernest and Martha (Pierson) Freeman. She married Glendell Paul Shewmaker May 16, 2000. She was an X-ray technician at Urgent Care. Surviving are her husband of nine years, Glendell Shewmaker of Norris City; father and stepmother, Ernest and Lynn Freeman of Payson, Ariz.; a daughter, Karen Schisler of St. Louis, Mo.; a son, Chad Farris of Evansville, Ind.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Debby Bello and Becky and Kenny DeLosier, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; and three brothers, Barry Freeman of Peoria, Ernest Freeman of Phoenix, Ariz., and Billy Farris of Peoria. Jimmy Lee Pearce, 71, of Evansville, Ind., formerly of Norris City, passed away at his home on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 after a long, brave battle with lung cancer. Jimmy was born in Cottonwood, Ill. on July 10, 1938 to Lee and Beulah Pearce, who preceded him in death. Also preceding Jimmy were a brother, Bill Pearce, and loving first wife, Shirley Hedger Pearce. He was a four-year Navy Seal veteran, 30-plus-year volunteer firefighter for the Omaha Fire Department and Norris City Fire and Rescue. Jimmy was an avid hunter and loved to fish and camp. He was the family cook and loved to watch the Food Channel. He was a jack of all trades. In the true spirit of his giving nature Jimmy has donated his body to the IU Center in Indianapolis, Ind. for medical research. He was a member of Bible Center Cathedral. Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of six years, Glenda Pearce; son, Brent (Tonya) Pearce of Norris City; daughter, Beth (Lynn) Williams of Eldorado; sister, Pat Watson of San Diego, Calilf.; stepdaughters, Jackie Headley and Tammy Forbey; stepsons, Gilbert Ricketts Jr. and David (Sarah) Ricketts; 16 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two more on the way; and one loving and adored pet, Truffles. The family would like to thank the staff at the Evansville Cancer Center and the 5100 Floor at Deaconess Hospital for the wonderful care and giving to Jimmy. Services will be at Bible Center Cathedral, 5000 N. First Ave. in Evansville, Ind. at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010. Visitation with the family will be from 10:30 a.m. until the memorial service on Saturday at Bible Center Cathedral. Campbell Funeral Home in Norris City is handling local arrangements.
Carmi Times Wed Feb 10, 2010 Grayville, Ill. - James Levi Orr, 91, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at his home in Grayville. He was born April 20, 1918, in rural Wayne County, the son of James Asa and Minnie Dell (Levi) Orr. He was married to Emma Phillips on Dec. 25, 1943, and she survives. Jim worked for over 50 years at O.H. & F. Oilfield Services in Grayville, where he was office manager and bookkeeper. He was a member of First Christian Church in Grayville, where he served as a church elder and Sunday school teacher. He was a past president of Chapter 11 of the Independent Accountants Association of Illinois, and he was an enrolled agent to practice before the Internal Revenue Service. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, was a past member of the Grayville school board and was named Grayville Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1982. Survivors include his wife, Emma Orr of Grayville; two sons, Robert Orr and his wife, Pam, of Albion, and Philip Orr of Grayville; three daughters, Nancy Adams and her husband, Michael, of Killeen, Texas, Mary Weber and her husband, Jeff, of Manteno, and Carol Jackson and her husband, Glenn, of Mt. Erie; one brother, Forrest Orr and his wife, Ruth, of Evansville, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Minnie Orr; a brother, Carroll Orr; and two sisters, Wanda and LaJune. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Grayville. Funeral is at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cook Funeral Chapel in Grayville, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery in Grayville.
