<http://www.carmitimes.com> Carmi Times Carmi, Ill. - Newton Smith Armstrong, 99, of Carmi, formerly of Crossville, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi. He was known as a quiet and gentle man. Born Oct. 11, 1912, to Huston and Ethel (Smith) Armstrong in Phillips Township, Crossville, he attended Graves one-room school and graduated from Crossville Community High School in 1931. Smith was a farmer most of his life, except during the years of World War II, where he worked in California and then Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for Pacific Naval Air Contractor, building underground fuel storage for ships and submarines. He was underground the day Pearl Harbor was bombed. Following the war, he returned to Crossville and farming in 1946. He was also a survivor of the notorious tornado of 1925. In 1948, he married Wilma Stanley Covert, and she preceded him in death in 1996. Smith later married Mary Lou Lamp in 2003, a long-time friend of the family, and she survives. Mr. Armstrong loved farming and was very meticulous about every field being manicured. He always kept a pen and paper in his pocket to jot down what needed to be done. He was proud of his birth date--10-11-12--and lived to be the oldest of his Armstrong generation. Smith always enjoyed attending his high school alumni dinners and spending 30 winters in his home in Fort Myers, Fla. He was a member of First Christian Church in Carmi and a member of the White County Farm Bureau. Playing cards, eating out, and being with friends and family were a big part of his life. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Armstrong, and a son, Stanley W. (Nancy) Armstrong, all of Carmi; a daughter, Peggy J. (Travis) Wake of Centerville, Ind.; two brothers, Edward (Mary Ann) Armstrong of Springfield and James (Sue) Armstrong of Crossville; a former daughter-in-law, Linda Langford of Draffenville, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Janet Armstrong of Carmi; a brother-in-law, Kenneth (UDean) Paul of Carmi; six grandchildren, Vicki Jones, Shelly Newman, Jill Armstrong, Brian Atteberry, Doug Armstrong and Scott Wake; two stepsons, Ronald W. (Hyla) Lamp and Richard (Roxie) Lamp; a stepdaughter, Diana Lamp; four stepgrandchildren, Kelly Kelsheimer, Erica Summers, Lindsay Rouse and Holly Lamp; nine great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 48 years, Wilma Armstrong; a stepson, Gary C. Armstrong; a sister, Wanda Armstrong Juenger; and a brother, Robert W. Armstrong. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Funeral is at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at Cook Funeral Chapel, with burial in Stokes Chapel Cemetery near Crossville. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church of Carmi.
