Miles C. Carter is my 2nd great grandfather. Carr E. Carter is my 1/2 grand uncle because Miles first wife Anna M. Hoge died and he married Malinda Emaline Moore Hoard. It seems to me that we have corresponded previously. What is your relationship to Miles C. Carter? Where do you reside? Let me know and perhaps I have information you may need. Thank you. Thanks Connie. I will check. Sieveking (like Keusch or my maiden name, Zuber) are rather unusual name so I thought I'd ask. Often you can find out info quicker on the unusual names--if you can find the spelling-- than a person like James Jones. Connie, Hopefully these storms will not be severe this spring. I live in about 40 miles from Newburgh, IN (which is just east of Evansville) and the tornado had weakened when it hit Newburgh to an EF1 or 2. But the damage there is terrible, not like Harrisburg or Ridgeway though. I noticed your surname is Sieveking--- I have a Nicholas Sieveking (Jan 29, 1885-Mar 26, 1969 Mt. I know relatively little about his family, other than the names of his father and grandfather. I am curious about his relationship (if any) to the Richard Oliver family (also of Bristol), who were in Antigua and later came to Massachusetts in the 1700's. Thomas Oliver was Ruling Elder of the Church in Boston after his arrival. Richard and Robert Oliver held land grants in Antigua, evidently beginning about 1690. I believe it is possible that the Oliver families were members of St. Nicholas Church in Bristol. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Most weather radios can be set for just a couple of counties. You just need to know how to program it. Sometimes they have programming days at Kroger. I have mine set to only go off for Franklin and Williamson Counties. I live close to the county line in Franklin County, but I'm figuring the tornado doesn't know to stop at the county line. :) Connie > Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2012 14:19:54 -0600 > From: cbconly@midwest.net > To: ilwhite@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [ILWHITE] Storms in SE Illinois > > Carolyn, > > The towns have sirens. Carolyn, The towns have sirens. I guess ours went off Wednesday morning but it must have blended with the storm noise that woke me up around 5 am. I heard there was no warning or just a few minutes in Harrisburg, as the tornado must have started near the town. At 5 am not many people are watching tv. A lot of people have weather radios but again there didn't seem to be much of a warning. Many people don't leave their radios turned on as they used to get warnings for too large an area and go off for hours. There had been rain Tuesday evening but no severe weather. At least 6 were killed in Harrisburg, and the damage was great, including a new mini-mall and the hospital. In Ridgway the 1870s St. Joseph's Catholic church was totally destroyed. The marble altar was spared, along with the very front door, but the rest of the building fell on the rectory and school. The popcorn factory and other downtown buildings were damaged. We had heavy rain and wind damage but not much else. Ridgway is about 25 miles from Carmi, Harrisburg is 33 miles to the SW. Hello, friends, I am wondering if anyone on this forum might know where, in the town of Crossville, the Primitive Baptist church, was located. That is, what street or streets? or what part of town. It closed in about 1986, and was torn down about that time, I think. I would appreciate any help. I may have some more on the Pearces as a distant cousin is a Pearce, descended from the Vaughn family. Dick Williams. Scamper at srt.com Among the early settlers to Indian Creek Township was a John Pond, who settled there about 1815. In a few years he had neighbors, and the community was called the Pond Settlement. One day Pond was away from home, helping some of his new neighbors raise a cabin, and when he returned in the evening he found the Indians had scalped his wife and two little boys. Pond lost no time in calling upon his neighbors, and before midnight a pursuing party of vengeance was formed composed of Pond, Hosea Pearce and a Mr. Trousdale. They soon found their trail, which they could easily follow by noting the disturbed condition of the wild pea vines and prairie grass. Not till the fourth day did the party discover a "fresh sign." Next morning at sunrise they found in the Okaw bottoms three Indians, making their breakfast off of a wild turkey. Each white man picked out his Indian and fired at him. One of the guns missed fire. Two Indians fell dead. The other one got away by getting to the river, where they lost his track. (Continued next week) ........ Members, Luckily, this did not really affect Carmi or White County, but Gallatin and Saline Counties were heavily damaged by tornadoes last night. Cindy
