The M could be for McCracken, as this was a popular name. The US senator from Carmi was John McCracken Robinson, and I think he was related to the McCracken family, but there was also a Capt. Virgil McCracken killed in the War of 1812. A county in KY is named after him. Hopefully you can find other Wood or Bruce resources. I have information on their descendants but have not been able to trace their ancestors. I have a copy of a funeral home notice for Winfield Wain Woods which states that Mary Bruce was born in White County, IL and Thomas Woods was born in Charleston, SC. I also have a copy of a page from the Woods Bible, owned by my aunt. It says that Mary Bruce was born in 180?..the last digit is torn off so she was born between 1800 and 1809. The children are listed as: Marthy b. Aug 13, 1823, d. age 13 months, 11 days Ally b. June 28 1826 James Perry b. Jan 22, 1827 Mary b. Jan 11, looks like 1831 Winfield Wain b. Nov 8 1834 Thomas Jefferson b. Feb 9 1838. d. Sep 4, 1841 John M. Woods b. Feb 16 1941. John M. was my great grandfather and he died in 1932. Do you know what the M. in his name stands for? His oldest son was named Charles McCracken Woods and I wonder if the M. in his name is also McCracken. If you have this information, I would really like to know that. Also, if you have been able to trace their ancestors, I would be interested in obtaining that information as well as your references. Thank you. I'm Thomas Val Pearce's daughter. I am a descendant of Prussian from Jewell and Thomas Pearce. Recently became interested in my family history because my husband and I have been visiting civil war sites and I was trying to find out if any ancestors served in the civil war. I have been corresponding with your sister Sherry and she has emailed some interesting family research.Very nice of her to share with me. From what I have learned I believe Hosea J Pearce served in the civil war. Its easy to get wrapped up in searching for info. I am really enjoying it.
